The Philadelphia Phillies CHOKE away another one as they fall to the Twins 5-4, to lose their third straight series.
Aaron Nola threw 6 inning of one-run baseball, with his only blemish being a Matt Wallner solo homer in the 2nd inning. The Phillies’ bats picked up their pitched though with a solo homer by Trea Turner in the 5th and a two-run single by Kyle Schwarber in the 6th. Nick Castellanos had one of his three hits on the afternoon in the 7th inning, when he brought home Brandon Marsh on an RBI single to right. Going into the bottom of the 7th, the Phillies enjoyed a 4-1 lead and it looked like Aaron Nola was going to notch his 12th win of the season.
Then the wheels came off.
Orion Kerkering started out the 7th and issued 2 walks and a hit batsman. Then Rob Thomson handed the ball to Matt Strahm with the bases loaded and one out. Strahm would surrender an RBI ground out and then gave up what the box score will call a two-run double by Carlos Santana, but in actuality it was a misplay by Brandon Marsh who short-armed a fly ball against the wall. A play Marsh has made many times, but was unable to in this case. When the dust settled, the Twins scored 3 in the 7th, to tie the game at 4.
The score remained tied at 4 in the bottom of the 9th, when Gregory Soto entered the game. Soto started his appearance by hitting Trevor Larnach, then throwing a wild pitch allowing Larnach to get into scoring position. A sac bunt put Larnach on 3rd. Then Max Kepler hit a soft ground ball up the middle of the infield that brought home the winning run.
