Art spent the last years of his life developing and hosting formats designed for corporate training and entertainment. The Money Words pilot displayed an interesting side of Art, showing he had interests on the other side of the host podium. Still have filed away some of his humorous TV Guide articles, especially one about the foibles of having to pick up the occasional unemployment check between shows.

We had two syndicators that wanted the show...Rhodes Productions (Let's Make a Deal, Second City Television) and Michael King from King World. Big mistake not going with Mr. King who at this point had only The Little Rascals. He soon would be one the most syndicators in the business. Clark Paylow was the line producer for Close Encounters of a Third Kind which I also worked on. We really had fun making this!! Art and Jay were the greatest!!!

Back when video screens were amazing, not an overused trope from the Aughts. Of course the brightness of the lights needed to make the cameras work made it unusable for TV, so they used Blue Screen over the actual blue display the video starts with, to zoom in fully to allow the blue screen magic to appear for home audiences. I'm impressed with the quality of the video, especially since the color demodulation was not cooperating at all. The recorder playback was a hare out of sync with the color signal, so you'd get that "Rainbow" effect when it lost the sync. Those demods are fickle things.

Think music in bonus round is the conference music from Crosswits (looped poorly). What an odd jackpot- it goes up by a thousand when not won, but ends in $500? Perhaps it started at $2500, but still very odd. This would have cost quite a bit in licensing clips had it sold. It’s not horrible, but far from good.
@marcpower4167

They could have gotten around that by having rotating categories.
@someguy23475
@someguy23475 4 жыл бұрын
The would have to change the set, since the two categories are embedded. Probably a good idea, since the audience as is would be narrow. I’m not a movie guy, so this game didn’t have much appeal

I always liked Art James, from Say When!, and was a contestant on the 3W's with him. I am so sad that there is so little of that really good quiz game left on tape. He was a great host, though he threw me for a loop with a question about Jonathan Winters in the interview, when the contestant coordinator had told me he'd ask something else. He should have been behind a podium here, instead of having to juggle a pile of questions in his hands. You can hear some hesitation in his voice, as if he's not quite sure if the right clip is going to come up. Otherwise, I have two bones to pick: the contestants are sitting too far apart, or seem to be on the screen, anyway (think Match Game in contrast) and the game itself is too simple with the clips slowing down the pace.

@ryanstrnad1852

I think this actually made it in first run syndication. I'm saying this because WISN-TV is Milwaukee once aired a show in 1976 I remember a set like this and a host that very well could've been Art James (reminded me of him). May've had a different name, but the series started out as an actual game show, but then just a couple months after, would only show clips from it's "game show" format (such as people winning) , as it would then revert to the host just being introduced on the set but would sit there only by in addition to showing us the past game show clips, also went on to show film clips as well. More of like a reformatted program. It would've only lasted for a season at best, 26 weeks more possible. Thing is, I never seen such a show listed in the Game Show Encyclopedia, hence the format change may've prevented it from becoming recognized as an actual game show.

Why have the $50,000 pot of gold to start with if the bonus game is going to be so cheap?
@KiddBloo86
@KiddBloo86 4 жыл бұрын
The odds of the ball actually dropping in those two slots are astronomical, hence why a [super] bonus? My only suggestion.
@jeprice08
@jeprice08 4 жыл бұрын
Well, as I understand it, the $50,000 was not that important to the game, meaning if someone lands on it (It almost happened twice.), their question and theirs alone if they get it right will win them that amount of cash but they still have to win the game. That $50,000 when won will be theirs to keep whatever happens.
@binahentz

The Pot 'o Gold would be the equivalent of the Super Jackpot on Jackpot!, something that would rarely be won but be a really big deal when it did happen.
@TheRogerdc
@TheRogerdc 4 жыл бұрын
Looking at the way the board was arranged, the odds of dropping into the pot o' gold were extremely small. The bucket for $500 was under that gap. If a ball was moving fast enough to make it to the pot there was another shelf that would direct it to the center.

Oops. How short sighted of the set designers. Only providing a 3 digit display in front of the contestants and not realizing you can go above that if it goes into tie breaker rounds. Anyway I didn't love this. I don't like leaving everything to chance with the values, the $50,000 is a troll as I don't even know if you can realistically land in there and it should be prizes, not a ridiculous amount like that. Anyway the game is just movie and tv trivia using a ball to determine values. Nothing too exciting sadly.

Jay Stewart was great. That voice adds excitement to any game show. However I have always felt that Art James was bland. He added nothing. The game itself was kind of cool. I like the chance element of the ball drops. However the ball dropping seemed unnatural to me. It's almost as if the ball was controlled by a magnet. It just stopped in weird places and didn't naturally bounce like in plinko. It just kind of hung on certain pegs. Not sure what to think about that. BTW...who looped the Crosswits bonus cue? Stevie Wonder with a razor blade? I didn't love this show. It was semi-ok if there was nothing else on to watch. Definitely not must see TV.

Good concept, could have been a good show to enjoy a decent run, just not sure about the execution of the package presented. The whole "pot of gold" seems like a gimmick that's thrown in there as yesteryear's version of "click bait"; not only is it secondary to what you're doing, but puts you at a disadvantage for the pure reason people go onto game shows, and that's to have fun playing the game.
