It should be stored in ampules long term because it can develop superoxides under mineral oil which explode when cut. Combined with the low melting point, you get molten burning water reactive potassium everywhere

Note, DO NOT PUT POTASSIUM FIRES OUT WITH WATER. Pretty sure this guy used more oil for that, but it does look like water. The problem is, if you DO attempt to put it out with water, it’ll spontaneously combust, splashing hot metal and possibly starting more fires.

I'm not sure if it's only safe to store potassium under mineral oil, but I have previously owned small quantities of sodium metal and I was able to safely store it without storing it under mineral oil. After significant research from accurate and reliable sources I successfully stored the sodium safely under liquid paraffin (sometimes known as paraffin oil). I made sure that I frequently checked that the sodium was stored under a clearly visible excess of liquid paraffin (that there was enough liquid paraffin to completely and thoroughly submerge the sodium), and I regularly added additional liquid paraffin to help ensure that the sodium was never exposed to air. I'm not sure if the same thing can be done with potassium metal, but with sodium there's several different hydrocarbon liquids or other liquids that can be used to safely store it, including liquid paraffin, mineral oil and anhydrous kerosene if the anhydrous kerosene contains no additives or colouring agents

@mastershooter64
@mastershooter64 Жыл бұрын
No it isn't, There are 3 commonly found isotopes of potassium, out of which 2 of them are the most common, potassium-39 and potassium-41 these are 99.99% of all potassium in nature and the remaining 0.01% is potassium-40 which is a radioactive isotope of potassium. The other two are stable and are not radioactive.

@Bit-while_going
@Bit-while_going Жыл бұрын
Halogens don't react much with metals since they both have surplus electrons. They might be useful in batteries though since they can add their electrons to the current. Mercury especially has lots a free electrons floating around and it doesn't even bond well with itself for that reason, but that also makes it like a solvent and it shares it's property by splashing electrons around and the other metals around also lose their bonds and are able to amalgamate.
