Designated Christmas dinner cook here: buy your meat now, freeze it and your golden, veg is veg and can be bought the week of and will be fine Prep EVERYTHING the night before. Veg, potato’s Yorkshires everything, put the veg in water in saucepans, will last over night just change the water before cooking. Yorkshire pudding batter is better left to rest over night (will look awful the next day because it splits in the fridge but just whisk it up, you’re good) Wine is your best friend. Enjoy and have fun.

In Germany a very popular christmas eve dinner (we celebrate on the 24th, not the 25th) is fried sausage and potato salad. Simply because no one wants to spend hours in the kitchen while everyone else is celebrating and having fun.

That's what I told my family about Thanksgiving, and it really helped me not worry about it. We had just the 5 of us, when normally we NEVER do any fancy holiday dinner lol. We would normally go over to a house of 20+ and different families...and they usually just want us to bring rolls :p I was like it's just going to be like a slightly fancier Sunday dinner. It ended up being a ton of fun, we really liked just each of us making a couple of things and surprised ourselves with how good we did!

I'm in charge of Christmas dinner for the first time this year, too! Luckily, I'm in the States, so I've been partially in charge of Thanksgiving dinner for the past few years, so that's given me some practice. Me, my husband, and my best friend have been bubbled since May, so we've been having holidays together since we can't fly back to where our families live. My best friend made the turkey and pies and my husband and I made a ton of side dishes. For Christmas, I'm making a ham and my best friend is making tons of cookies and my husband is making side dishes.

My partner and myself have been doing christmas dinner on our own for the past three years. We both choose our favorite christmasy foods from our childhoods and make a mini buffet that we snack on such as cheese and crackers, some crisps/pringles/tubed snacks, roadted beggies and some minis of deserts. Neither of us are big into cooking joints of meat so we buy two trays of frozen pigs in blankets which is a big win. A good tip is to prep as much food as possible the day before and write a out a rough timed schedule to help with cooking everything on time. We also buy the dogs something yummy to have with us too.

Oh! Im pretty sure its a typical dutch tradition, but i could be wrong. We do 'gourmetten'. Its when you get one of those tiny cooking plates with little pans underneath it, and you just prepare a bunch of tiny meats and veggies you fancy and you just cook together at the table. Its a pretty good system cause you dont have to walk back n forth to the kitchen all the time, and its pretty fun to do together :) tiny hamburgers, tiny potatoe slices, tiny sliced vegetables. Its really cute :)

Christmas dinner! I did mine for the first time last year for my husband, myself and my toddler. Best thing to do is to plan your schedule! So think of when you want to eat your main meal, and then see what the longest thing is to cook and then subtract that time from when you want to serve and do the same for everything! Don’t forget resting times for turkeys, if you can prepare the veg the night before it’s a life saver in the morning if you don’t want to be pulling your hair out, if you use the standard sage and onion stuffing from a box (like paxo) you can cook it like normal and then stick it in the freezer and then on Christmas Day just stick them in the oven for like 15 mins!

I'm working Christmas morning this year, so hubby and I are prepping the meat and veg the night before. You guys do you, don't stress Carrie. I just think of it as another roast dinner and all will be well. If you're worried about veg going off, freeze it! Just remember to defrost it overnight. My top tip is with Yorksire's - whisk as much air into the batter as you can and rest it for half an hour. Mine balloon like giant marshmallows! I'm glad you achieved your dream of having a room named after you! And I need one of those straws in my life! Have a lovely Christmas!!

Hi Carrie, since I met my wife 25 years ago, I've relied on the magnificence known as Delia. Her quite old fashioned, Delia's Christmas book is amazing. She has everything timed from Christmas Eve onwards, which obviously isn't all needed but it's great for timings. I also cook my turkey the night before, freeing up the oven to then cook as if it's a simple Sunday roast. All else failing, have an MnS Christmas! I try to keep it simple as possible, as I'm very like you, and let the smallest thing effect my day, feeling I've let everyone down. Hope you have a truly wonderful Christmas. All else failing, jump on a train to the North East and let us take care of your day, lol!

I do the Christmas dinner when we are at my family's for Christmas. This year it's just me and my partner, so will be more relaxed. Plan out your timings before the meal, and who is doing what. But don't overdo it and there is nothing wrong with spacing bits out. There is nothing wrong with ordering in or buying bits from supermarket preprepared either (M&S is my favourite for this). You will be surprised how much is still available at the supermarkets and freezing bits won't harm them. More than ever it's about the quality time with your family. Merry Christmas x

I had my first Christmas last year, just me and my partner. My biggest advice is to make a menu and write all the parts to the Xmas dinner that you want. That way you don’t miss anything when you go shopping. Don’t forget breakfast, ‘supper’ and drinks. Then just chill and try to keep things as simple as you can and enjoy spending time as the 2 of you. Hope you have a magical Christmas and thank you for making 2020 just that little bit bearable. Xx

I work in food production and we are required to list ingredients in order from main ingredient to least: so any packaged food should list food in order of percentage essentially. Names also need to be indicative so as not to be misleading, as Carrie said, but the list on the back will also be in order. I thought that was really fascinating when I learned that. My Christmas plans are weather and covid dependent. But will either way involve snickerdoodle cookies, books, and an oversized sweater!

For christmas dinner we cut up and prepare all the vegetables and put all the extra bits on trays the night before to be ready to go in the oven. The cooking timing of everything is the stressful bit for me so only having to focus on making a few things and putting the rest in the oven in the right order makes it easier. My favourite is dried apricots in blankets! 10/10 would recommend.

We have a roast every Sunday and every year since they could eat we’ve had turkey & all the trimmings,so given the choice of food , they have unanimously decided we are having, steak & chips to start & a chocolate & praline bomb for dessert! I’m not complaining as my hubby is the cook of steaks so it means I can sit & enjoy the morning with my mum & my boys (I’ve not seen my mum properly since August so I can’t wait!). Christmas dinner SAVIOUR for me and my family is to do all your prep the night a few days before for the fiddly bits that take up time . Mash and roasties can be done and frozen as well as Yorkshire puds. Don't bother with gravy. Go to your butchers and buy it in a tub and should last a week approx. And if it all goes terribly wrong, put enough booze in the Christmas came you'll forget all the stress anyway! Merry Christmas Fletcher house xx

This is my first year doing Christmas dinner and like you it's just the two of us this year as we're tier 3 and it was too difficult to chose which 3 households to mix with for just the one day I'm not working. I've made things easier on myself and preprepped everything a head of time and frozen them or bought preprepped items like the pigs in blankets, Turkey, roast potatoes, parsnips etc. Prechopped my veg, premade my stuffing balls and frozen them all. So now all I really have to do is shove things in the oven at the correct time and basically make gravy. If I could have premade that and frozen it I would have done but let's face it gravy will be the quickest thing to make on the day. Really enjoying vlogmas, as I do every year! Good luck with your Christmas dinner!

I've planned to spend Christmas alone this year even though my family lives in the same city. We cannot all isolate long enough since my brother and I are working not from home, and my parents are high risk. I am in a city with rising cases, so I have decided that I just need to suck it up for this holiday and celebrate later. However, I know my mom is planning a Christmas drop off with food and presents, so I am very lucky I don't have to cook! If it was just me I wouldn't bother making all the regular Christmas foods!

I’m actually going home for Christmas and I’ll spend it with my family. So I’m taking the earliest train home om the 23rd, since we celebrate Christmas on Christmas eve here in Sweden. I’m planning to stay at my parents until I’m needed back in my town to avoid unnecessary travelling. Usually, my aunt, her husband and my cousin are celebrating with us, but we’ll have to see if they feel comfortable to come to us. But it’s going to be nice either way! Oh, and don’t worry too much about the Christmas dinner! Just have fun with it!☺️

The last few Christmases, I've done the Christmas meal! I go full organised with it and get a spreadsheet, with oven times and prep times, to make sure I am also maximising oven space. Since my folks' are over 60 (and my dad with asthma), this year we are doing masks in the house while opening presents, and then to my garden to eat homemade chicken and stuffing baguettes at distances from each other, and thermos' of potato and leek soup (nevermind that BBC good food calls it leek, bacon & potato soup...!). It's going to be a shame not getting to celebrate proper Christmas, and of course London garden weather isn't exactly the most exhilarating thought, but to keep people safe, it's more than worth it. I hope you and Oliver have a wonderful Christmas together. And thank you for a really uplifting vlogmas.

I'm a big fan of modified holiday dinners when it's just a few people - you just make your favorite bits so there's fewer moving parts the day of and you don't have a monstrous amount of food. Or not doing a traditional holiday meal at all! We've done Thanksgiving (US) where we've had non-Thanksgiving food for our dinner and then made a small turkey to make turkey sandwiches the next day.

The key is to prep (chop all veg the day before and either keep in water in pans ready or in tubs in fridge. Don't put too much pressure on yourselves (its just a giant Sunday roast after all). Make it your own, have what you two like not what your 'supposed' to have on Christmas Dinner. And most of all enjoy it!!!! Looking forward to hearing how it goes xx

For Christmas Dinner, I always write down all my timings and temperatures on Christmas eve and then set alarms on my phone for when everything needs to go in the oven or on the hob and when they come out. That way your not always watching the clock and you can enjoy the time in between cooking. Also I prep almost everything on Christmas eve so on Christmas day you just need to pop them all in the oven x

I think it sounds fun that it's just you two, so there isn't the same level of pressure as if you were cooking for a big group. Almost like a practice for the day you do host the family! And it'll be a really nice memory for you and Oliver to look back on. I've co-cooked dinner with my older brother the last couple of years; he does all the meat (scary stuff) and I do veg and sides. But this year we're doing Xmas in separate bubbles and I'm in charge of everything, so I feel you.

A tip: if you want the soup to heat up faster, don't put it in the center of the microwave plate, it's the place where the waves get to less. If you put it at the edge (or off centre if it's a large plate/bowl) it will warm up a lot faster! 🍜
@iamthefilter3 жыл бұрын
Microwave tip: don't put food in the middle of the plate, put it on the outside part of the plate, because the middle just spins on itself it's harder to heat in that spot. So put your bowl on the outside part of the plate! Oh and if it's a plate full of food make a lil well in the middle of your food!

So here in Australia we are allowed to see our family for Christmas as we basically have 0 COVID cases. I know here in Victoria we are allowed up to 30 people in our house. Normally my uncle and aunt host Christmas lunch as they have the bigger house and the best means for entertaining. However my aunt is working late Christmas Eve and wouldn't really have the time to prepare like normal. So for the first time in I can't even count how long, my mum is hosting this year. So the "children" are pitching in to help. My brother and his wife are making a salad (salads are very common for Christmas here since it's so hot) they are also bringing slow cooked meat. I'm preparing a dessert and bringing the treats bowl. Also my boyfriend is preparing the fruit bowl (again, common to have fresh fruit, definitely helps combat the heat). I’m exactly the same! The tiniest thing that goes wrong and I feel like the day is ruined 😂 I’m going to try really hard this year as I know it’s going to be different to how it usually is. I have cooked christmas dinner for myself and my parents for the last 5 years. I recommend choosing vegetables you enjoy. Ask Gi how to do her potatoes, your butcher might be sold out but look in freezer sections of supermarkets they may have a turkey crown or turkey roasting joint perfect for you and Oliver. Use Paxo stuffing box (they do smaller ones to save waste) and Jolly Hog Pigs in Blankets are the best (pre blanketed pigs, also make great sandwiches boxing day if you don't eat all in one sitting). I’m always the cook in my family and have been for the past 4/5 years. My sons birthday is the 23rd and I still cooked dinner for my entire family two days after he was born because I love Christmas that much! I’m the same as you, get so worried about not getting everything/ the right things especially when you have so many different people and traditions to cater for! However, because of the current situation we have decided to just do Christmas with our household (me, my husband, son and daughter) really looking forward to it as it’s my daughters first Christmas but made me realise I still feel the pressure even when it’s just us! I kind of want us to be hauled up at home for a few days so need even more food than usual and want them all to have everything they could ever want food wise. I think with the dinner it all lies in one thing: the roast potatoes!!

Christmas dinner: Grandma makes shrimp with cocktail sauce, covered with basil and such as entree. Then we have a "bread soup", which is basically a bouillon soup sifted many times. It tastes like bread. Then my mum, sister and I make the main course which is turkey, steak, veggies, peaches and fried potatoes with whatever sauce you want. Then as dessert we have vanilla icecream with heated up chocolate sauce. For drinks we usually have wine or grape juice. This is has been a tradition since i was born and I always look forward to it because Christmas dinner for us is so yummy. On Boxing Day me, mum and sis are going to gourmet and cheesefondue for the first time so im looking forward to that!

Honey-roasted vegetables are what I do every year and fluffy roast potatoes, lots of carrots, and sprouts. Top tip - do as much prep as physically possible the day before, I mean chopping carrots, prepping sprouts, and preparing the pigs in blankets, etc, it will be easier on Christmas day and make things less overwhelming. Sometimes I even cook the turkey the day before (with loads of basting and bacon etc to make it not dry and then carve it and reheat it in tinfoil the following day (because sometimes our gas pressure goes way down and it would take like 8 hours for the turkey to cook on Christmas day). My granddad barbeques his turkey crown in tinfoil so, this year is a chance to create some traditions of your own. As we get closer to Christmas I am dreading it more, I wish I could be with my dad. I fully agree with me not going to see my dad but it doesn't make it any easier to know I won't see him this year. Just got to do what is right for the world. It's mine and my S/O's anniversary around this time too and it makes me emotional I won't even be able to get a hug. Just feel very lonely but I am lucky to have not been too badly affected by COVID this year.

Just me, my mum and dad for Christmas this year. I did cook a Christmas dinner for my flat in uni halls before we all went home!

We do not do Christmas but considering how many Jewish holidays that require a big meal, here are some tips! You can definitely freeze the turkey or your meats for the day before to then defrost for Christmas! Veggies are a bit trickier, unless you are buying pre-frozen, you should be buying a few days before. Granted, potatoes, string beans, carrots etc. in the fridge can last for over a week so just make sure you buy good produce!

oh about the stiff neck/muscle headaches: i usually sleep with a silk scarf during winter! they're not too bulky so they're not really noticeable, but really warm and cosy without overheating you. :D

We do breakfast, but my tip is prep as much as you can the day before that way you just have to take out and cook/reheat.

It’s a bit untraditional, but I had a stuffing waffle at Epcot yesterday, and I think I want to make those for Christmas. It was just regular stuffing in a waffle iron, but it was crispy and tasty. The turkey, gravy and cranberry sauce on top were really good too.

I’m doing Christmas dinner for me, my husband and kids this year without the rest of my family and for some reason I’m feeling the pressure more! Just try and remember it’s a roast dinner, prep as much as you can the night before and have a glass or two of wine when cooking and you will be fine!!!! X

Got to your butchers and see if you can order a turkey crown. If not what I tend to do is buy a small chicken and a beef joint (we don’t like turkey in my household) and then all the trimming from the supermarket too. If you’ve got time you can get it all the day before if not buy a few days ahead and everything can be frozen and then taken out the night before. Christmas is supposed to be enjoyable so think of it as a posh sunday roast. Also tip if you happy to eat later in the day then do it as it won’t make you stress about the timings and get up early to cook. Hope the tips help 💕

The first 8 years of my adult life was spent a thousand miles away from family (I got married young and my husband was military) so I was thrust into holiday cooking and had to learn on my own how to do it. 14 Christmases later I’ve gotten a pretty good handle on things. What I would tell you is less is more. Pick a couple dishes and do them well. Especially if it’s just you and Oliver, you don’t *need* all of the side dishes. We usually do ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, a veggie, stuffing, and rolls, plus a dessert or two. But I also make up a veggie tray, chips (crisps) and dip, and maybe sausage rolls or little weenies wrapped in dough to snack on throughout the day until dinner is done.

Seeing that straw thing reminded me of something I did to warm up in college!!! I used a kazoo! I had a hard time distinguishing when I was using proper projection techniques and the best way to make sure I was hitting the high notes with proper technique was to blow it through a kazoo! I'm pretty sure I broke mine cause it was a cheap plastic toy but it helped me a lot!!

My bestie/roomy and I are on our own this year for Christmas as well, and neither of us are ever in charge of food over the holidays at our respective family gatherings, so this year has been a mad dash of trying to figure out what 'must haves' we each want and trying to work out if we can actually cook them, while also not making more food than the pair of us can realistically eat! We both don't quite know how to feel about being apart from each of our families this year, but with COVID, neither of us felt it was responsible to go up to Northern California (where each of our families live) from Southern California (where we live). We've decided to get dressed up in ridiculously fancy dresses for dinner as well, just to make it feel more special and less like a random day of the week.
