I used to make this in Germany when I was there from 1988 to 1991. I had radiant heat floors and would let it rise in bread pans on the floor (clean floor of course) during the day while I was at work and then bake fresh bread at night for dinner. I the lost the recipe but was able to figure out how to concoct it at home when I returned to the States.

YES! Finally think I’ve found the way to start the starter I used to have. Mine had been given to me by an elderly cousin, who had had it in her family for many years. Then our daughter was diagnosed with celiac, so all bread with gluten was off-limits. I went gluten-free for a couple of years, but have now decided to go back on gluten since I don’t have celiac & since g-f foods are more expensive. I so hope this works! Thanks a bunch!

Thank You Renee! My Mother in law made the best sourdough bread but unfortunately I never watched her make it. I found her recipe and yours is exactly how she made it. The instructions were to feed the starter with the recipe for that and then the recipe to make the bread. I’m assuming that she actually was gifted a started and these were the directions to continue feeding it because there was no yeast in the recipe. I’m going to do exactly what you did with step 1 and continue. I will let you know how it turns out. 🤗 My mother in law passed away a few years ago and we miss her dearly.

Sourdough Bread Starter Starter: Keep starter in refrigerator 3 to 5 days, then take out and feed: 1/2 c. Sugar 3 Tablespoons potato flakes 1 c. Warm Water Mix together in a bowl. Then, pour in starter. Leave out of refrigerator for at least 12 hours (uncovered). When bubbly take out 1 cup to make bread ,and return the rest to the refrigerator. If not making bread after feeding, give or throw away 1 cup. Feed every week to keep from deflating starter. Recipe for Bread In a large bowl, mix together the following ingredients: 6 c. flour 1/2 c. sugar 1 teaspoon salt ½ c. corn oil 1 ¼ to 1 ½ c. warm water 1 c. starter Then, pour out on a lightly floured board or paper. Knead a little. Grease the same large bowl with oil. Then put dough in and turn over so oily side is up. Cover with a cloth and let it rise 8 hours in a warm place. (The dough rises slowly.) Eight hours after the dough began to rise, pour dough onto a floured surface. Divide into three loaves. Use only enough flour to handle the dough. Place in loaf pans that have been sprayed with P.A.M. Let rise in a warm place until the dough has doubled. (Usually 4 to 6 hours.) Do not preheat oven. Bake 30 minutes. Remove from pan at once and brush with butter. Place on a wire rack until cool. Cover with plastic wrap when cool. (Makes 3 loaves.) Enjoy your bread!!!!! Note: If you want to have bread for supper, feed the starter one morning, letting it set out all day. Then make the dough that evening, letting it rise overnight in the bowl. The next morning, put the bread in the loaf pans to rise until double. Then bake bread.

Hello! Thanks for the video. I used to make this bread, I got this starter from a friend. Trying to start my own from scratch. The starter I used to use had a distinct sweet smell. My new one started out that way but once I brought it out the fridge after the 3 days it had a strong vinegar smell, even after I fed it again. Any idea on what I may be doing wrong?

Can you please show the 2nd part of this video? Also- I have heard that you can leave the starter out on the counter in warm conditions for 5+ days and then take out a cup to use for bread and put the rest of starter in the fridge (everyone has different directions). I got a really fantastic recipe that is similar to yours, but the way it is written is confusing. I don't want to leave it on counter for too long or not feed it enough- I ran into problems with my original recipe so I'm using yours, but I'd love to see the final outcome. Thank you for sharing!💗😊👍

Will this bring it back?
