Please let us know what you think was the cause of our cracking. Also, let us know how your potato harvest was for 2024. Thanks!

Nice potatoes. And yes you know how they were grown. So much better than store bought. My guess is all that rain. Val C

We're leaning towards the rain causing the cracking but this is the first time that we've ever encountered this issue. Cheers Val!

A flush of water just like tomatoes made then split. Great video.

I think you're correct. We've cut them open and they are perfect in the middle. Just split. We'll get them preserved and ready for the winter. Thanks for confirming our suspicion! Cheers!

We've never tried replanting potatoes they same year. Have you tried that before ? No recollection of split potatoes. Only damage when lifting them. There was a tale about storing potatoes with a green apple. Could just be a tale.
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm Ай бұрын
I've never heard the green apple story. We've planted before. If we can keep the potatoes covered during frost, we can get another 2 1/2 - 3 months of growing. It'll produce some nice small potatoes for roasts, etc. We'll keep you posted. Cheers Bryce!

The mix of a massive change in moisture and possible over fertilization made those potatoes split I think. I had some planted too close to a flower bed I was fertilizing and it was where my hose splitter dripped and the ground was constantly wet. Those potatoes and only those were split like this.
@TheOldSwedesFarm

This is interesting. I did fertilize the potatoes twice. I'm hoping that wasn't too much. I'm hoping it was just the massive amount of rain we received. Cheers!

I think the split ones are caused by too much rain. I had the same thing happen last year. They will have a rotten spot in the middle. In order to save them, I peeled and pressure canned about 35 quart jars worth. It was kind of a hassle, but useful for making potato salad and hash browns over the winter. Thanks for the video.🙂

I think you're correct about the rain. I believe Holly will be prepping the potatoes the same way as you, in the quart jars. We want to preserve as much as possible. Cheers Sarah!

Hey, Rich and Holly. Our potato harvest isn't over yet. Steve dug up some of the red La sodas, and they were the size of baseballs a month ago. The tops of the plants are still green, so we are leaving them in. Even though we had so much rain, the tops were so large that Steve still put a drip line underneath the straw around them to provide for consistent moisture. No rain was getting under those canopies. Does that make sense? Your harvest looks great, though! Hopefully, we can get together sometime soon and compare notes. Oktoberfest again?? 🍻

Those must be some potatoes! I've heard that some potatoes produce a large canopy and it keeps the water off the spuds. Watch our next video. You get a special mention!! Let's figure out the dates of Oktoberfest and see if we can both clear the date!! Have a great week!

Beautiful harvest of potatoes! 🥔 I'm not sure why your potatoes are split like that? Our harvest was awful this year. 😢

Great Harvest, lots of potatoes. Even though it may have cost the same to just buy the potatoes at least you know where they came from and what was put on them. plus i bet they taste a lot better.

Deformed potatoes can be caused by excessive heat, water stress or uneven nutrients. Based on this summer, I'd say you were right on the money with the excess water washing the nutrients away.

My 3rd year doing potatoes, 1st yr great, last year horrible, this year was ok i tried mostly Pete moss and compost soil. Foliage was very healthy so i had big hopes for huge harvest. I just diced, blanched and froze some and i tried mashed with butter and milk and froze also. All the potato farms near big lake,monticello and west are all sandy soil, maybe i need to try that. Back to drawing board...

I am going with a very light soil. Adding lots of compost and light material. Maybe I need to add some sand to a couple beds and rotate them. It's always a learning experience with gardening. Garden, take notes, make a plan for next year and move on. Thanks for stopping by to watch and post! Cheers!

She is going to shred some for hashbrowns and freeze them. Others will be cubed and canned. Others will just be left to be used as-is. I can't wait for a roast and fresh potatoes!!
