To bring some knowledge to all shitlords here, making a song about potatoes is not weird from a Korean perspective, neither for North nor South Korea. In Korea, famines are a recent memory, again, for both Korean halves. Both the North and South have had famines only decades ago and so, eating has become basically the cure-all for all problems in life. Ever watched any Korean show? The characters are constantly eating, no matter what is happening, and they constantly ask "have you eaten" as a form of concern for somebody else. When somebody is hurt or in emotional distress, the first response of any North or South Korean is ask if they have eaten, or recommend that they should as soon as possible. Now consider the potato in itself. A plant that requires very little in the way of care to provide a bountiful harvest. You can feed a lot of people with minimal effort. To make a song gloryfying it, especially when it was previously not native to the shores of Korea, makes a lot of sense. tl;dr - not a funny song, but makes a lot of sense, actually.

@Malcolm Hoth It's not Communism. That's the most western stereotype we have about them. According to the North Korean constitution they officially stoped with communism in the 1950's, instead opting to create their own system called "Juche", which embraces literal Monarchism, Ultra-Nationalism, Ultra-Militarism and Self-Reliance. Calling North Korea Communist is the oldest joke in the book that everybody keeps repeating, so it must be now fact if its been repeated a zillion times. Just pure Western Ignorism. Or...the media is fully aware but keeps using it because it triggers politically correct people such as myself.

The beauty of Best Korea is that this song could very well be from the 1980's, the 1990's or the 2010's. We just don't know; they're all equally possible. And that's what makes this timeless.

Communist regimes strive to make work glorious, no matter how menial. That’s why there are songs for these kinds of work in the propaganda stash. Of course there’s always praise of the Party in the songs, because this is the nature of party communism - the Party is (so they say) the implementer of the communist society. Non-communist societies also have these songs that people sing to keep themselves focused at work. There are probably a lot of “planting rice” songs in Asia.

I visited North Korea as a tourist in 1988 and then again in 2002. In 2002 one of the North Korean guides explained to me that North Korea was developing the potato as an alternate to rice to attempt to improve its food shortage. I got the impression that the North Korean government was sensitive to this as I never read any reports of this in its official media. This initiative made a lot of sense to me as North Korea is a mountainous country and also quite far north making the cultivation of rice quite difficult. One night my tour group was staying in an hotel in an area known as Chilbo (in the north eastern part of the country close to the Russian border). The restaurant in the hotel served us a meal including small dishes of potatoes cooked in different ways. As tourists we were fed very well despite the country's recent famine. Been from Ireland I told my tour guide how important the potato is in Ireland. I also related to her that Ireland experienced its own famine in the 1840s as a result of potato blight.
