Tapioca starch is great, I found it much better than corn flour. It seems to have longer molecule chains, one part to 12 parts water. Add a drop of clove oil to keep it longer in a wet state and in the fridge. Cook it till you get your paste.

In theory any product high in starch can be used. Whatever is cheaper at the moment wins. 👍

How long does the powder last before you have to toss it?

As long as you keep it dry, it will keep indefinitely, but cooked, it starts deterorating after a few days if still wet ,but when it dries, once again, indefinitely.
