Potensic ATOM WayPoint Flight Tutorial (4K)

The Potensic ATOM is a rather capable camera drone even it does have some drawbacks. This footage shows you how to do a WayPoint flight and some weakness.
(1) The ATOM does support WayPoint. But, its support is in general not as good as those drones' whose are priced similarly.
(2) The design a WayPoint route is the same as that of every other drones. However, there are some features that make me feeling improvements should be made:
(2a) When you tap the trashcan icon, it removes all the points you
added so far. Is there someway to delete the last point? I don't
know after many tries.
(2b) From this footage, the drone and the controller maintains a
constant communication. As a result, when the communication is
weak, the drone hovers where it is. You can either brings the drone
back with RTH or use the GO to restart. In the latter case, the
drone will fly back to point 1 and restart the WayPoint flight.
(2c) Points that are farther than 500 meters from the HomePoint can
be added to the WayPoint route. This is odd because some of my
cheap drones can do better to much better.
In general, if you adhere to the above limitations, your WayPoint flight should be OK and the drone will provide you with a rather good captured video. Just keep in mind that DON'T FLY TOO FAR AWAY. If the drone hovers during a WayPoint flight, kill this flight or restart. Isn't this frustrating? It is a big YES to me. Of course, you may not agree with me. BUT, I have warned you here.

At 4:22 you show how the waypoints can be saved and I have tested being able to re-fly a past waypoint mission using these features. If anyone can find where this file that stores the waypoints is located I am all ears as it would bring up powerful possibilities by editing this file manually. Possible uses would be flying outside 500 meters or automated mapping projects. I am very happy with my Atom!

As a matter of fact, only Potensic can answer your question (i.e., the location of the WP saved file). I was not able to find the location. Most camera drones that support WP allow the user to save a plan; but, most of these apps could only re-fly the most recently saved plan. The only app that allows me to save WP plans with a file name is one for the DJI product.

I too saw your point 4:22, though I was hoping that you or someone actually were able to store a Waypoint flight (settings) and then be able to show us how to recall those Waypoint settings....maybe a list shows up or something. But I've tried on my new Atom and it will fly the Waypoints, Very Cool, but when I hit the store button (as you show) nothing is displayed. Then when you hit the list button (next to the store button) nothing is displayed...pretty much like nothing is storing or able to recall a list of stored Waypoint flights. Maybe they are working on this feature??? Can anyone respond w/ any useful thoughts on this?

Well done - THANKS! Beautiful. Where does the map come from? That is, how do I preload the map to the controlling app before I go to fly in a remote location? I had a DJI a while back and it allows caching of the Google map at home before a planned outing (you could just save a portion of Google Maps over WiFi or do it inside the Go app - with whatever service they use - and it gets cached there), so you can use a non-phone enabled WiFi tablet with GPS enabled. I just checked and that still works perfectly, but I want to get this wonderful Atom. Thanks again.

Before you arrive at a place, connect the drone and controller, tap the map at the lower left corner and move the map around. In this way, the app may record the map. Or, make sure you have Internet access right before you fly your drone in the field.

Sorry. I can't say anything about that because I am not with Potensic. On the other hand, I would rank my needs in this order: (a) make the video transmission/penetration better and stronger; (b) make a better Gimbal so that it won't tilted to one side when flying even after calibration; (c) redesign the app GUI so that its display avoids the left side being blocked by the iPhone's black strip (i.e., camera), change the exposure compensation to +/- 0.3EV rather than +/- 0.5EV for a better control of exposure, and allow for WayPoint pre-planning without the requirement of flying the drone first. (d) The QuickShots should provide virtual fence warning before the execution of any flight rather than stopping the flight and hovering when the drone violates the virtual fence. There are others I would like to see changes, but for now the above listed are the most wanted one. After finishing my study of the ATOM, I will send a list to Potensic. Whether they will take it seriously is out of my control.

hi, i've got one question, can we set some point of interrest with the waypoint nav ? can the drone keep the camera on a point while doing the waypoint ?

The WP capability that the ATOM has is a very primitive one. As a result, it does not have POI. It cannot fly a curved turn when the aircraft approaches a WP point.

No. If the drone is over 500m from the current position, the app won't let you place a waypoint. So, plan the WP first (on a map) , go to the center of your route, fly the drone up and finally setup the waypoints. This would minimize this 500m restriction.

In my case, Potensic is better than most Chinese drone makers, except for DJI. At least Potensic tried to respond when most Chinese drone makers either ignore my request or respond with nonsense messages a couple of times and then never responding. I hope your problems were resolved to the degree that satisfies you. Otherwise, send them messages and boycott them! Please keep in mind that Chinese business models are not the same as those in the US. We have to let them know what we think and want. Or, we won't buy their products.
