The Potensic ATOM is a HIGHLY Impressive Camera Drone! Review

I received mine about 4 weeks ago and have been having a blast. I have a part 107 and have taken it up to 1500 feet within a 400' envelope of structures in my city. I purchased a pair of 2.4 ghz yagis which improve reception and range by about 25%. Yesterday's firmware update significantly improved night video, removing much of the noise apparent at 4k resolution. The update also improved video transmission stability at range. I feel that your comment about compass calibration is incorrect. Beyond the drone requiring compass calibration relatively frequently, it's also a good idea to calibrate the compass before every flight no matter what. Don't risk a flyaway. I get around 1.5-2k range because I fly in one of the largest cities in the world and there is a lot of frequency competition. I flew in the path of a microwave dish at 650' and immediately lost the connection. Return to home works as advertised.

Wait a minute - can you point me to where you got these yagis and how you attach them to the controller? As a ham radio guy I'd be having a lot of fun with something like that (although portability may suffer).

@@chipsawdust5816 I have come across DIY Yagi Antennas on the net b4. Some builds are easier than others. Also there are 2.4ghz Yagi antennas with a 25 dbi claimed gain on Amazon for under $30 U.S. each.

I'll let you know I flew the ATOM in its max wind capability and the gimbal began to vibrate from what the video feed was showing, and I was getting warnings about the wind speed. I returned home from over 2,500ft with basically zero video feed in strong winds. Gimbal went back to normal once I was close enough to lower down and experience less wind.

@@DaleK-j9g I'm thinking the control frequency is 2.5ghz as when any time I'm connected to 2.5ghz WiFi I get bad connection issues. As soon as I turn off WiFi or switch to a 5ghz WiFi connection the drones connection to the controller becomes normal again

I bought the Atom around easter after doing lots of research and reading as many reviews as I could find. I got it for £306 with the fly more kit. The equivalent Dji, Mini 2 se was £100 more for a similar kit. In my experience, this has been utterly fantastic. It is so stable even in wind that is fairly strong at 17mph. The video quality, and even standard photo quality, is excellent. I would say sometimes depending on ambient light, the whites can be a bit blown out. On a decent day, I've had the drone over 4000ft away from me and 400ft high. My mate is actually a drone pilot. He uses mostly dji's costing £4000 plus, and he was really impressed by the video quality and functions of the Atom. Bonus is there is no enforced geo fencing. I've used it dozens of times now & it's never landed further than 3 ft from its take off spot. For the money I paid, I don't think there is a better buy.

Really helpful video. I bought the Atom based on a review and havent been disappointed. Ridiculously easy to operate. The 30 fps is the NTSC setting so I'll have to reduce to 25 fps as I'm in the UK and PAL is 25 fps and Power Director 13 works on 25 fps. My drone lands within 2 feet of the landing pad which is pretty good. The three batteries are great for the beginner (like me) to allow familiarity with flying and drone features. Like you, I'd highly recommend the Atom.

I too bought this drone based on your review. I have not opened the box yet so I’m hoping it is all you have said it is in Your review. I also have a DJI Mavic Mini (Gen 1) that I just finally got flying again as when I purchased several years ago I immediately got it stuck in a tree and after waiting a couple of month for it to come down I was afraid to fly it again so there it sat since my first calamity. I got rid of my DJI drone and just started using Potensic. I had issues with “RC not connected to mobile device” and “unauthorized fly zones” which made me hardly fly it. Potensic was always ready and hasn’t giving me any issues. I’ll be buying another one soon.

I bought a Mini 2 SE and it never got off the ground. DJI support had me go through all sorts of laptop gyrations with their software to wake it up but it never connected with the controller. They said send it back for another; I bought it on Amazon so just returned it. That's when I decided on the Atom, which with the fly more kit was only like $40 more than the basic Mini 2 SE kit. Plus the DJI, I learned later, has geofencing which may be a good thing but I can make my own decisions about that.

I bought this drone based on an earlier review by "someone else" and have been very happy with it. I have not been able to get the follow me and other Quickshots to work, but Potensic has been very good with support and they're working through it with me. I bought a DJI Mini 2 SE first because it's - famous, I guess, and highly recommended. And maybe it would've been my drone except - it never got off the ground. DJI said send it back for exchange. Since I bought it on Amazon I just sent it back. This one with the Fat More was only $40 more then the DJI bare-bones kit. I've had a lot of fun with this. I did get the Fly More because it's just such a good deal (price has gone up 5% since I bought it). This is my first drone so I'm still learning how to fly smoothly, but it's coming along. I take it on trips, take it to work - you never know when you might just like to see something from the air :) This morning there was a firmware update and that went seamlessly even though I wasn't on wifi, just cell phone (AT&T pseudo-5G).

Ging ook behoorlijk zelfnog harder met de 11 volt lipo hing nog harder. Hou alleen rekening mee . Dat alles goed blijft werken vooral remmen. De snel heid van je Traxxas vind ik toch super geweldig . In metrics, they should add km/h . m/s takes some calculating and here in the EU we all are used to km/h.. cars.. motors etc all do km/h. For English/Amerikan users i recomment Miles/h .. and not ft. Hight should stay Meters and ft .. But i see this problem on most drones. And i would love to get my hands on one of these Atom drones... Good review !!

Accuracy of RTH, before you take off, if you wait for a greater number of GPS satellites to be found, the accuracy of RTH is far greater. So don't take off immediately with 6 (whatever the min is), wait another minute until the number goes up.

Most drones will have a slight horizon issue during any flight. If it were an issue then it would occur 90% or more of the time, but this one does not have it.

Love this drone, nothing to envy DJI and better price. I just got it. I used a Holy Stone HS720E which I still have. The one thing I noticed is that if I don't use it for few days maybe a week, the batteries get depleated, also in order to see the videos or pictures I have to remove the SD card and put it on my phone, not sure if maybe is me. Does it return home if battery is running low? Thanks for yor video!

The batteries, if left unused, have a safety to self discharge. Most drones are designed to take the MICRO SD card out and stick it in your computer. Those people who wish to record on their phone simply screen record the low resolution image. If battery is low it returns to home... look at the top of your phone screen when flying and you'll see if it is nearing low battery return to home mode.

Not really. I think they are the same. Also DJI drones are very good at having a perfectly level horizon. You get more features in the ATOM, but DJI has plenty of research behind them.

I'm planning to get back into flying drones and I'd like to go easy and cheap so I'm considering this. That said, the side-by-side comparison with the Mini make me lean towards that - there's just a lot more detail overall, e.g. on the tree leaves on the left, or the bricks on the house in the background. You can even make out the license plate on the grey car, while the Atom's clip just doesn't have enough detail in there. It's not just a matter of contrast, it's sharper and more detailed to my eyes. My advice would be to read the comments posted by viewers below each video… Many have bought both drones, and by reading the comments you will find out how they feel.

How does it compare to Zino mini se? Does it truly get sats immediately so it can take off? Has it any mastershots (not quickshots). Finally, how far out can it go in urban before it loses reception? 500m? 1km? Please reply to each. I bought my Zino mini se because of you. Thank you

Very nice drone. Would i buy one, yes i would. Love the controller, and wish DJI would have something similar. Potential customers must not confuse this Potensic Atom with the very similar looking (identical) Potensic Atom SE. NB: The Atom SE has no 3 axis gimbal. Fabulous drone and review Steve.

I'm debating between the Potensic ATOM and the FIMI X8 Mini V2. From your reviews the app of the Potensic seems more refined. But, the FIMI X8 Mini V2 seems to have more features like Precision Land. Given their comparable prices which would you recommend?

The Atom would be my first drone purchase, I live in Colorado and hope to fly at elevations above 10-11 thousand feet, do you have any experience, or advice, flying at high elevations? Normally a remote (also called a transmitter) will last anywhere from 4 to 6 drone battery flights. Most small drones do OK (not great) at elevation. I have no idea how the ATOM performs at elevation.

Correct. All good drones on the market have modern receivers that only bind to one controller so two pilots or more can all individually fly their drones

The ATOM is an overall better drone than the FIMI Mini V2, although the FIMI Mini V2 has more flight options available to the pilot.

I disagree friend, I bought the FIMI X8 Mini V2 and a friend chose to buy this Potensic ATOM, we have been comparing both drones and the truth is that the FIMI is much superior in specifications, functions and its sensor captures more details, but the quality of the construction material of the Potensic is much better than that of the FIMI. My friend now wants a FIMI. Both drones sometimes bend the horizon, but in the case of the FIMI this happens rarely and you just calibrate the Gimbal and that's it, while in the Potensic it is a disease, on the other hand the FIMI yellows the image a little, but thanks to its other modes recording this is not a problem, we also have a flat profile to later color to our liking 👌🏻

I live in an area with many trees. Does this have obstacle avoidance? For example, if I press the return to home button, will it safely avoid any trees which might obstruct its path?

If you set the RTH height to be above tree height, then you never have to worry about crashing into a tree on return to home.

Thinking about this or the DJI Mini 2 SE controller and bag bundle with an extra battery. Costs $329 at Sam's club. This ATOM drone is only $379 on Amazon currently (50% the normal price). Which one do you think I should go with? The 4k resolution on this drone has me really tempted. Get three batteries and a follow mode for only alittle bit more than the Mini bundle. I will be using this drone to film cars, like driving stuff, car showcase videos, ect.

Go for the mini 2 SE. Less features but more repair centres should you destroy it.

The follow mode and brighter more vibrant videos due to the lather lens size is more important to me. I don't like how the Mini 2 SE has slightly dull looking footage, and only shoots in 2k. honestly im not sure if you are guys looking at the same video clip or not... the comparison in quality you can clearly see DJI mini 2 sharp tree on left side, with Potensic it is blurry as hell.. it is like camera from 2005, i have this drone and when i left it for automatic adjustment of the camera the quality of grass and building walls was terrible, im gonna try set it up manually to see if it will improve.

I was just looking at the DJI Mini 4 Pro, and considering the pricetag of the DJI versus the Potensic, the Potensic looks as it's a better "travel companion" considering that I like to travel to the Faroe Islands, Iceland, etc where strong winds are pretty much occuring all days, and although the photo/video quality might not be as crisp as the DJI , I'd not think that the DJI actually is worth the high pricetag that it has. So thanks again Steve for bringing another very interesting item out to us viewers 😊 🙏👌

Both are great. If you have NEVER owned any type of drone before, then you’d want the Potensic.
