For automating the "dampeners" using a timer block I think you just need to turn the thrusters off and probably the gyroscopes. I think instead of turning on and off gyro override you could have one always with override and have another without.

Thanks for trying the connector method! When I suggested that, I was hoping it would work for you. Looks like it can work, just need a long enough umbilical and some space around the drill vehicle as you head down. Nice job.

I think the dampener issue is caused by the cockpit orientation. The ship is sideways and the structure is upright the dampener is trying to dampen in contradicting directions.

Have you thought of using an AI cube to track the position of the tether to allow for it to be complacent but active instead of it being dictated by the physics engine?

Sadly, until KSH puts in some sort of umbilical for this, this idea will wind up costing more time and resources than it's worth. Take the tether apart, use the pieces to build a funnel with light gravity pulling in anything that floats in front of it, and you're golden. However, I must say MAD props for your efforts. SE is one of those games where players like us can spend hours trying to solve the simplest task.

This is done in creative... Taking it apart to recycle will take more time then the experiment.
