Another qulaity video Jelle. I have had the backboard fall on a numbe rof my trees this past 18 months - two branch breaks!! I love the unique character of these as a bonsai but alas I fear I may not increase my workload to add one to the retreat :)

Great! It really pays to let these branches grow, certainly when young. But wire when branches are young!

Great video Jelle, this is one of the many species that I'd love to have but don't have the time or space ... maybe in my retirement years!!

Thanks Jelle for this video. I have 3 lovely potentillas waiting for a haircut! The roots tip will be very valuable as I didn’t know how it affected them to trim a lot off, so I will be careful in the spring repot. Cheers! 😊

Great video!! I have seen these in stores! Not that I need more trees... But I do very much love the trunks! Thanks Jelle! Sorry, I really had a lot of chores to do, and I needed to find the coolant leak on my vehicle. So 12 hours later, I am watching!🥰

Make sure your canopies are not too dense so they stop water from reaching the pot!

Thanks for yet another great video (big fan of your channel although I haven't commented yet). The twisted trunks look great, and the leaves indeed work well for bonsai. As young plants are quite cheap to buy, I presume they are easy to propagate. Could I recommend to shortly comment on how to best propagate species in future videos? I know you've done lots of videos in the past on propagation, so simply mentioning whether to propagate from seed/cutting/airlayer is more efficient would be sufficient (no need for extra recording/demo). P.S. spotted you from a distance at the Trophy. I would be happy to meet next year (and you are always welcome to come over (approx. 1.5 hours drive) and see my trees, though so far I only have sticks in pots)

Hi Rapido, these root easily from cuttings. I have rooted both young branches as well as hardwood of 5mm thick. Funny that you saw me at the trophy, yet I think I did not see you. I will be on stage during the trophy as moderator the next edition, so should be easy to find me there :). Whereabouts are you?

Thank you so much - some really helpful info as I progress with my small potentilla. I would have never guessed about the root - branch connection. How do you transition from a nursery pot to a bonsai pot without causing major die-back?
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai Жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful! Normally you reduce the roots carefully, where you cut back to strong side-roots. This might mean you have to root prune a few years in a row to reduce main roots fully.

Hi Jelle, good job again with this video. I have one potentila myself, but in the starter plant state. Main goal ist developing a trunk, so it went in the field. Do you have some hints considering different varities of potentilla? I guess the bonsai related ones are all Potentilla fruticosa. But there are different breedings. Mine is for example Potentilla fruticosa 'Abbotswood'. Would be interesting if there are varieties which tend to develop good trunks, because i often see kind of old ones which still are super twiggy with rarely a significant trunk. Best wishes! Paul

I am not sure how the different varieties behave to be honest. I have white, pale yellow and bright yellow flowered ones, and all of these grow the same!

So far I have had them backbud yes. I heard people had challenges though. But for me, no issues there.
