my dad was on that failed rescue, neil moss is still down there, they capped off the chimney where he fell with concrete.

After he suffocated I think I read somewhere that his mother asked for that part of the cave to be sealed up with the bloke still in it .

Graham B yup it was capped - it wasn't part of the cave as such but imagine a corkscrew twist drop passage with a small top opening.

I can remember my dad telling me this story when I was a kid. He would has been almost turning nine and living in London at the time of this tragedy.

My Dad used to tell me this story too. I always assumed it was an urban myth until the Internet sadly confirmed it.

I remember this. Vey sad. Some of my older friends helped with the rescue attempt. (Nice to know there are intellectuals like rastan saga prepared to give us the benefit of his anonymous wisdom.)

@@Luis-bo2uj The comment was 7 years old when you posted it, so it was posted in 2014. That's 55 years in-between the rescue attempt and the comment. Since he said "some of my older friends," I'll guess he was 14 when this happened, and that guess would mean he was born in 1945. Given that, he would have been 76 when you posted, and 78 now, in 2023. I might be off with a few estimates here.

yes that was my dad, i still have the 2 issues of Descent mag with it in, can't find it anywhere online, tho i was told by a mate they still use his report in the syllabus for the cave leader courses

@@simongellert844 My dad, member of the Eldon Caving Cub. He became chief training officer in the Derbyshire Cave Rescue in the late 70s and wrote the definitive report of this rescue
