Another fantastic jewel of your collection of your videos, Mark - I am going to do my best to spread the word - thank you and really hope to see more videos like that -

Great video!! I’ve enjoyed a lot of your other videos as they show we get what we pay for when planning cities. I’m currently doing my best to plan for a bikable and walkable city in the US, but it proves hard to convince other city officials that change is possible. Unfortunately much of the US is very much stuck in the mindset of the 50s and 60s as far as transportation and land use planning goes.

Incredible video! I happened to visit Utrecht for the first time in October and shot a short video of Potterstraat by chance. I had no idea of its history or importance. I was also really impressed by Schiphol train station. Putting a full-sized station in the "basement" of the airport was novel to me. Most European cities I've visited have a spur (e.g., the RER in Paris) that leads back to stations in the main city, but Schiphol has direct trains to, say, Groningen.

Fantasic clip. The forage of the horrible roads of the 60's and 70's looks like where we in the UK are with our city streets today. I see what you have done over there and dream of a better future here! In the UK people are fond of saying that the US is 10 years ahead of us. Maybe so, but the Netherlands is about 30 years ahead! Good on you :D

There's hope for the UK. I've visited Manchester last weekend. And they've turned Oxford Street into a real dutch street with seperate cycling infrastructure. A bit too much spending on fancy things like LED-lights (I bet the costs of that, could have been spend on another good cycling road), but it's an excellent start on the right spot for good cycling infrastructure.

@@erik5374 LED-lights use far less electricity so even though they may be pricey, they're a sound long term investment.

@@erik5374 It's impressive how long those protected bike lanes both sides of the road go on for. The bike lanes here in Bristol are always put down in short sections, and it is always claimed that funding is the main factor at play. The gold standard here for some reason is two-way cycle track on one side of the road. I think Clarence Road is one of the best examples of a good stretch of track that is ruined by its beginning and end. Often I find myself frustrated by the endless pedestrian crossings and "shared paths" so I'll risk the road instead.

it looks like, we in Italy (Milano, Roma, etc) are still in 1965-75. So we have another 30 years to go, before Italy becomes Holland, in bicycle sense. But it is not granted, that we will improve. Things indeed could even get worse, with more and more cars polluting and blocking all the streets..... Congratulations to NL!

Proof that widening streets produces more traffic. Narrow streets are more accessible and safer for everyone.
