Nice to watch your enjoyment and conversational style. Thanks, Cyclamens scare me (we have summer rain and terribly dry winters in South Africa) but I put the seed heads into an organza bag to ripen, just opened the pods today and am very excited to move on with seed propagation!

I noticed how older videos are short (from few years ago) and you’d say you’re talking too much and you’re worried it will bore the audience... well to be honest I like this longer video more because I learn more! These facts are interesting actually! Anyway, glad to know my cyclamen isn’t actually dying 🙈 haha

Hi, I have a indoor cyclamen I got given it about 3 years ago now and it has flowered pretty much ever since! I kid you not it only stopped flowering once that I can remember and that was only for 2 weeks maximum. I do dead head it regularly and I'm not green fingers at all so it's often flopped and then I remember to water it. It has been the most incredible plant! I looked at your videos to see how to get the seeds off it, but mine has never done the spiral thing with the seed pod is this cause its an indoor plant? Great video, you obviously love what you do. Thanks

Greeting from Italy. Since C. hederifolium are native in my zone, I am lucky to have a few wild palnts in my garden, that self-seed but don't propagate very efficiently due to other competitive plants and quite compacted soil. So, thanks to your videos, this year I am going to give 'em a little help. Following your advice I have harvested a few hundreds seeds and I am trying to germinate them. We'll see in a few weeks if I will be succesfull. I have just two questions. Last year after some digging in the garden, a few tuber came up, so I planted them in a big, short clay pot. The established pretty well. Now they're gone dormant, just some pods ripening are left. I'd like to move part of them in a slightly raised bed in a spot near were they were originally growing, but with less competion from other wild plants, so they could hopefully thrive. So: a) In the last week it rained a lot, is it better to wait till the soil in the pot will be dry? b) Should I water them while dormant or not? If yes, how much? Best regards.

Giuseppe Giorgio Longo Morning, your message finds me collecting cyclamen seeds myself! It’s currently my ‘first thing in the morning’ job and will be for the next few weeks. Cup of tea and the radio on, it’s like an hour meditation before the (very busy) world of online plant sales kicks off each day. Now is the best time to get some seeds on the go, I find them to sprout far more rapidly when fresh. I’d get your ones in pots in the ground now, a bit wet is perfect. I always give them a good drenching before planting out, disturb the roots as little as possible get them in their new homes. Give them another watering once planted and then leave to dry in the summer heat. In pots I only water once they are dry and then give them a good soaking. As the temperature drops and they start to push up flowers I increase watering, so long as they are growing they are drinking. Thoroughly watering and then letting them dry out is my method. Outside they should look after themselves, just keep an eye out for predators and overcrowding. I hope this helps, all the best Robbie 🌻

@@stinkyditchnursery750 Mostly the same: checking the pods and watering potted plants before sun is hot, while sipping a cup of coffee :) Then again at sunset, with a beer, when I check thne needs of my plants, hunting for stinkbugs trying to eat *everything* and giving appreciation nods to the spider fellows doing their job. Good decompression from everyday life. Wish I could buy a few less common specimen from you, but I suppose international shipping is not a thing. Good evening, sir!

Just love the information, keep up the good work Robbie, also the cillicium i got, i grow above ground. I heard They Are sun lovers, and I find the tubers interesting to look at. They Pretty much, only have the roots into the ground, since the roots only Come from below the tuber and not the sides like hederafolium. Also u should take alot of pics of the leafs next season, id love to see Them All if i could.
@stinkyditchnursery7504 жыл бұрын
Royalize Orchids cilicium work well in full sun or shade. I’m so glad you have noticed the difference in corms between the species, It’s good identification stuff we use a lot at the nursery when potting on plants in summer that have lost their labels!! I’m ok with coum, hederfolium, cilicium and graecum but struggle with the less common ones I grow, sometimes you just have to wait until they start growing again. I will be taking pics of a lot of my hederfolium when they come into leaf to sell them as individual plants. They are so varied and people (including myself) would prefer to choose their leaf pattern rather than getting a random one. I have lots of large plants in litre pots that I haven’t put on line yet, I normally just sell them to collectors that always have a chat on the phone and choose from pics I send, also a lot of FaceTime, this is always the easiest as it’s as if they are at my virtual market stall and I can pick out the plants for them in real time. A few hundred will be going into 2 litre pots this summer so will be monsters with 80-100 flowers. I’m quite reluctant to put them up eBay for anyone to buy as people think they are the same as the throwaway ones at Christmas, which after 5 years work is criminal. For now I have to check the customer knows how to care for them first, it’s like selling puppies or kittens for me!! When they put on leaf in autumn I will be cataloging and photographing hundreds of them and getting them on my website with some sort of check in place so nobody throws them away thinking they are dead. Got a lovely bit of rain today, it makes the nursery smell so fresh after a couple of weeks of dry, take care, keep safe and don’t stop growing, All the very best Robbie 🌻

@@stinkyditchnursery750 ok ty alot for the long text Robbie, i Hope u doing well. I love when you talk about plants, the info and love you show Are rare to find among People these days. Acutally care about the plants and dont throw Them out. I just repotted alot of My cyclamen today. And I saw growth on My hederfolium and purpurascens. Interesting People say They Are dorment, but the root growth is quiet impressive. Maybe its the woody/coldish species dont need a proper dorment periode like lets say the species down south in the hot countrys. Something tho i found weird as also i found growth on some of My coums. Isnt that really weird, i only saw leafs tho. One of My ininminatum or what ever it called had rot Sadly. They so small, in the book it say it live in Woods. But maybe it needs conditions like cillicium i dont know. Have a good Day. Happy growing. Have u been trying out other species?

Hi Robbie, I have the indoor ones, they have a flat corm and no seed pods when the leaves die down . How do I propagate those ones, perhaps you might do a video on them next time? I love your enthusiasm, keep going! Stay Alert !!
@stinkyditchnursery7504 жыл бұрын
henry edwards sorry for such a late reply, not enough hours in the day. The indoor (cyclamen persicum) are quite often many generations away from the natural plant through commercial breeding. This can cause them to behave differently to the natural forms with sterile seeds sometimes. Saying that, my daughter grew 80 odd plants from a couple of cyclamen from B&Q! For seed to form the flowers have to be pollinated, this is normally done by tiny insects but indoors this generally doesn’t happen. When they are in flower with pollen take a small artist’s paint brush and give the inside of each flower a bit of a tickle in turn, this will do the insects job and seed will start to form. I think I did a vid on the subject if that’s any help. All the best Robbie 🌻

@@stinkyditchnursery750 Greetings from Italy! For what my opinion worths, last january I was able to grow a few plants from a single pod of a florist cyclamen that was already on the plant when i bought it in September. It tooks ages to ripe and contained just seven seeds. From the info I got (mostly "Seed Germination Theory and Practice" by Dr. Norman C. Deno), in C. persicum light inhibits germination (I just put the ziplock with paper roll in a closet) and they don't like temp in the 25-30°C range, best results around 15-20°C. Regarding pollination, I notice that they produce A LOT of pollen (or at least the specimens I got do) which often I found on leaves, also indoor with barely no wind, so a little shake to the flowers is enough to pollinate in my case. Right now I have several pods on the mother plant. Of course they have REALLY a strange behaviour, they're not going dormant, continue to flower, don't know if I'll manage to keep 'em alive another years. Stay safe.

Just what I needed thank you. I bought some cyclamen last year which have flowered all winter and have just died back I was wondering what to do with them. I will leave them in the ground. They are next to a violet patch which is a little invasive so will it be ok to let the violets do their thing without it being detrimental to the cyclamen?
@stinkyditchnursery7504 жыл бұрын
Anne Fricker I’d give it a go, just make sure the violets don’t swamp the cyclamen as they start to put on new growth, best of luck Robbie 🌻🌻

Robbie: I just repotted 60 cyclamen H. I find that the roots on most of my cyclamen come out the sides of the top half of the tuber. Sometimes there is a single or up to three roots coming out the center of the bottom but otherwise the bottom half is smooth and rootless. Is this unusual?
@stinkyditchnursery7503 жыл бұрын
Hi Kenneth Reister, all perfectly fine, hederfolium have quite a distinct smooth bottom with the roots predominantly growing from sides. Different cyclamen species can be identified by the corm if not in growth, they are all quite different. It’s a good bit of knowledge to have. Best of luck with your repotted babies, they should start to put on some new growth over the next month or so, all the best Robbie 🌻

Hi Robbie i asked you last year why my cyclamen didn't come back this year and you said the store bought cyclamen don't have a tuber? only the leaves are present this year Why do they not come back the way they were when I bought them?How do i know what to buy in future so as this doesn't happen again? Rose
@stinkyditchnursery7504 жыл бұрын
Hi Rose, the store bought cyclamen ‘persicum’ are bred as throwaway house plants, they can keep going for a few years but not a 100 years like their wild ancestors. They are so far from the natural form that their internal clocks don’t work too well. They are ‘tricked’ into believing it’s time to flower early to get a sale, not to produce a strong healthy plant. Naturally cyclamen ‘persicum’ produce leaves first followed by flowers in January-March. If yours is still going you should get flowers at some point but maybe not as many as when they were bought. I get a few messages from people saying their red cyclamen come up white the following year! I think this is because the flowers are dyed in some way. If you want a plant that will come back year on year I would suggest finding a grower that grows naturally from seed like I do. I’m guessing you are not in the UK from ‘store’ not ‘shop’! I’m not able to send my plants out of the country as they are a protected species and I need a license to do so. If you have your cyclamen inside have a google search for naturally grown cyclamen ‘persicum’ or ‘graecum’. If you have them outside have a search for cyclamen ‘hederfolium’ or ‘coum’. I wish I could be of more help, oh maybe I can, message back telling me where you are in the world and I’ll have a search myself for a grower that could help you out. All the best Robbie 🌻
