A tip I heard was have them wear a pull op over thier underwear in the car

That's one of my favorite options!

Or if the store is out of pull-ups or more absorbency is needed without losing the feeling of wetness important for toilet training one can instead put on a regular diaper on top of the underwear and use the diaper’s tapes or Velcros the same way that one would use then ordinarily. I have occasionally heard of parents doing this if they prefer not to buy disposable training pants for any reason.
