In '03 I bought a Ram 2500 CTD 3rd gen. (Before AEV was a big name), and set it up kind of like AEV is now in late '04, knowing the possibilities and advantages with these big trucks. Prior to the launch of AEV Rams (AEV Brutes were out, and getting popular),years ago at an Overland Expo in AZ, a few of us Ram owners got to have a group talk with reps from Chrysler, AEV Dave, & Scott Brady, during a Jeep talk. They asked if they could shift the talk to "full size Ram trucks" and wanted to inquire about these big rigs, and what we had done to them for "overlanding". About 5 or 6 of us chimed in. The panel took note, and Dave / AEV & Chrysler ran with it...... Who woulda thunk ! I'm still running my '03 Ram 2500 CTD, 6 speed manual, stock 4:11 gears, open front, LSD rear, 37 inch tires on stock wheels, 3" VR suspension (Kore-Carli-Thuren hybrid of my own mix), winch bumper, heavy full size spare rack and #2 35" spare underneath. Sometimes a 750 pound camper, sometimes just a topper, sometimes a 300 pound rare "Box Tent", coming up on 20 years / 150,000 miles, and a countless trail list under it's belt. By no means a rock crawler, but the San Juans as you have done including Black Bear, COBDR, Mojave, Canyonlands, Death Valley.....the objective of getting "way out there" with all my desired gear in a larger platform and a decent roof over my head. ( Still run my JKU a lot too) Wish-list is still that Habitat or Snap Treehouse ! I am ever impressed at what these big trucks can do, with the loads we haul and the terrain we push thru, with no lockers. You've got a sweet set up. Enjoy the vids.

That wall is a beast. I was up there just a couple of weeks after this video was filmed, and got told by a Ouray resident who, apparently, had in fact rolled their half ton full size off that...to just ignore that it is there and imagine the whole trial just doesn't exist, driving my Raptor. lol. I heeded that advice, and watching this, since I was solo and just bumbling around taking photos...am glad I did. hah. The line you took with the AEV on 40s definitely ate it up without leftovers. Gotta dig it!

Honestly, if I had been alone I would have taken the bypass. I’ve wheeled with Kevin many times and trust his talent for spotting. And with that local there to show us the right line, that was an an enormous help.
@123-o8u1j2 жыл бұрын
I've run it in a F-150. It's not that difficult. Hells gate obstacle in Moab is way worse. A Raptor on good tires should have no problem running that whole trail and the wall.
@ansleythestewart2 жыл бұрын
@@123-o8u1j one of the days when I've some friends I trust with me, I'll probably give it a go. But the trip I was on was totally solo, and the end goal was near Baja. Getting myself stranded by myself that early in the trip seemed a dumb idea, and while stubborn, I'm not stupid. lol.
@123-o8u1j2 жыл бұрын
@AnsLand I ran Imogene then Poughkeepsie Gulch then Black Bear pass in August in a 99 F-150 I built. I never listen to Jeep people they think that Jeeps are the only Off-road vehicle. I use my truck and have run over 50 Colorado trails. It's older but has never let me down. Having 2 or 3 rigs definitely helps. We ran those 3 trails solo just me and my woman spotting.

@SwellRunner2 жыл бұрын
I came across your video! We didn’t do black bear. Did you?? In the 3500??
@dlindf2 жыл бұрын
@@SwellRunner yes, we did blackbear pass. Have to be honest, it’s not something I ever want to do again in a full-size truck. when we got down to the bottom a group of guys we didn’t know gave us a standing ovation and immediately offered us beers. Over landers are the best. The truck is too big for the switchbacks. I mean I made it, but the front tire was literally on the edge on that first big turn which is the eroding. My wife kept telling me to pull more forward and that made me think more about my life insurance policy and the depth of our love (hehe 😍). We ended up getting through it… Thankfully. We’ve done other trails like Lippencott, mine Road in death Valley, Steele pass and a bunch of Moab, like white rim some places which were pretty tight with rocks, and the truck did amazing. Honestly, I think the limitations for blackbear were me, not the vehicle. Just depends on how comfortable you are hanging your rig over the edge of 1000 foot cliff. Poughkeepsie was great though, I loved watching that 8000 pound vehicle conquer the wall. I got my initial route from another KZbinr who drives the green Land Cruiser, maybe outlaw Overland I think he’s pretty awesome too. I wish I had seen your video first and it would’ve helped me too. Got into over landing in 2020, watched a lot of your videos and built my wife’s 4runner first, then the truck for me in 2020 as well. Our kids love it. We were so thankful for the content that you produced, as well as others to help guide us in selection of vehicles, routes, etc. Also, just letting me know that regular dudes can do this i.e. not gearheads lol.

PLEASE build up the experience and courage to run Black Bear Pass next year in your Prospector XL and do a proper video on it. The video would no doubt certainly get mass views and your videography skills would set it apart from the other videos of full size trucks on Black Bear. The truck bed is big enough to bring a wheel barrow so that you can put your massive balls into it to carry them around town once you make the descent and reach the bottom. Cheers from Denver Colorado!

No lockers in the XL??? Seems like it ought to come with for $100k…ARB’s??? Great example of extra wheelbase being your friend! Well done!

You have to realize these come as OE spec - AEV doesn't crack the drivetrain/driveline at all - that's all factory from Ram. I know people that have locked the front and rear, but I've never felt the need. The limited slip diffs are pretty good.
