Awesome video and truck. AEV makes outstanding vehicles and products. Your review of the 2020 Prospector XL at SEMA one year is what got me interested in full size overlanding vs the Wranglers I had owned since 2001. I have the 12" screen on my 21 75th Anniversary PowerWagon and its super useful. With the 12" screen your climate control functions (right and left temp control, mode, fan speed, auto or not, recirculation or fresh air mode, defrost front and rear) are buttons on the sides of the screen, so you don't have to pop any of that on the screen to use it. The benefit over the smaller screen in my opinion is when running carplay you can have your map (google maps, waze, whataever) on 1/2 of the screen and then your media/music or phone on the other half.

I bought and installed the front AEV bumper on my 18’ 3500 Ram and am very impressed. I’m saving up for an Expedition One rear bumper for the spare tire carrier mainly. Best value I think for me as the vehicle is payed off and the warranty expires. I’ll wait for suspension upgrades once I’ve worn the stock system out to some extent. I’m happy running 35” tires for all of my needs for now. I’m not thrilled not being able to fit a spare without a tire carrier.

Super dream truck! Awesome. Some advantages on using the Power Wagon would be the heavy duty axles, the lockers and the built-in Warn winch. I would imagine that using the 5.7l or the 6.4l could be beefed up a little to push those tires.
@SwellRunner11 ай бұрын
100% on all that for sure!
@jfletcher49498 ай бұрын
I agree that using a Power Wagon would be ideal for the reasons you mention. The 6.4 Hemi would not have a problem with those 40" tire and especially with 4.10 gearing. Also the Power Wagon has very low transfer case gearing when off-road. I had a 6.4 Hemi with 37" tires on 17" wheels and it was not a problem even whit the 3.73 gearing. That gas engine puts out some serious power.

Great video to see you back and let us see your ideas and adventures. One thing I would say is that the Cummins has issues with grid heater bolt that sometimes comes loose and goes into the cylinder usually number 6 and destroys the engine. Banks diesel has an upgrade for elbow and grid heater. May be a non issue since you live in a warm climate but just a simple fix for $100k+ truck.

That’s something good to cover. I totally forgot about that. I’m running a rig’d untra swing. It’s a good temporary solution for trips that I can remove when I’m at home. Others just carry it in their bed. Just kinda depends on what you wanna do. But the ultra swing is great and gives additional mounting and storage options.

Thanks for the great overview! I'm looking at an AT4XHD AEV for my next vehicle and am sold on "new, official AEV" for all the reasons you mentioned. One that you didn't, but that is super important to me, is insurance. I have a 2009 JKU that I bought new and have built up over time. It has a 6.2LS swap, full metal cloak lift and armor, bumpers, winch, etc. etc. The maximum I can insure it for is stock 2009 JKUR blue book + $5K in "accessory" coverage. This is far below replacement cost. Like your 4Runner, it's to the point were I wheel it and don't sweat scratches or dings, but with a new $100K+ truck, having full insurance coverage and a full warranty is critical.
@SwellRunner11 ай бұрын
I have full insurance coverage. I can’t remember the details but I was clear, even to the extent of showing the invoice and build sheet from AEV to make sure everything is covered. Tell us about those new 40s! Do you like them? I've heard that the Cooper tires were hard to balance, did you have that issue? or did you just need new tires?
@SwellRunner11 ай бұрын
I hated the coopers. By the time they got over 5k miles they got super noisy and yes, they could never balance them. I kept hearing of massive failures on the highway too. I swapped them out at 18k. I have been happy with the XComp Gladiator mud terrains, they’ve been a lot quieter and the wear has been really good. I have about 18k on my first set of theirs now and I have a lot of tread left. But they haven’t been in stock since last September.
@bradentokoly11 ай бұрын
Did you go with the SAE or Sport Baja Designs / CJC fog light kit? I've been looking into the same kit. One more question... where do you get you tires balanced? I have a Power Wagon with 37s and it's never easy... I imagine 40s are even harder to get a quality balance job.
@SwellRunner11 ай бұрын
I did the sport. It's brighter than the SAE - and I don't run them on the road. They're a nice addition offroad. I do get some nasty looks from time to time when they come on when turning, but it's worth it. I use my local Discount Tire for all rotations and balancing. They're mostly reliable and effective, but not perfect. And the balancing is usually good, but also not perfect all the time.

In my opinion, the best truck platform for overlanding is the Ford F-250. I am in the business, and all of the big 3 brands have issues as far as recalls and ware problems. The F-250 has, by far, the most stout stock suspension and axles. The trans has a good reputation, and the diesel 6.7 is definitely the better motor. I like the creature comforts of the interior as well. This is not to say that I don't appreciate other trucks. I do like a lot of features of the Prospector. Your outfitting is a great way to go. I'm excited to see what more you have planned. Having said all that, I still like my Bronco the best. Mine is the same color as yours. If you buy a lift, wheels & tires at 4 Wheel Parts, you can get a 100K mile warranty on the drivetrain & 3yr 36K parts & labor. It is solid too. Everything is covered too.
