(THERE IS A LOT OF MISINFORMATION BEING SPREAD, I WANT TO CLARIFY) Do not panic, there is nothing to fear, all we can do is control what happens to our own flocks and use good biosecurity. This too shall pass, and we cannot control what others do. It’s not about bird flu killing people that will NOT happen, it’s about killing birds. If you’re asking yourself what’s the big deal? Hasn’t avian influenza been around forever. It’s not that black and white. It’s about this specific strain and the high mortality rate of birds. There is low pathogenic and highly pathogenic and multiple strains of all. This is H5N1 a Eurasian strain that hasn’t been seen here since 2016. Our friends and their chooks in the UK have been dealing with it and it somehow made it here. It will kill a lot of birds, not people. The virus hasn’t mutated to transfer from human to human, just bird to human (VERY RARE DONT WORRY) Things like this can happen from time to time. We had Newcastle disease here in California from 2018-2020 and no poultry shows or bird sales but we got through it. Chick sales are happening again now and the poultry industry is thriving here. It’s just very sad a lot of birds will die because of this, but we can do our best to protect our own flocks. You can still eat the meat or eggs or a bird with avian influenza. The commercial poultry industry is the most affected thus far. We can help save the lives of many birds with taking a few minor precautions. Good biosecurity and quarantine new flock additions also helps stop the spread of many chicken respiratory diseases like infectious Coryza and Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) not just avian influenza.

So sorry you guys are going through this as well. We are used to this in the UK. My birds have been in lockdown since November and it’s not likely this will end before 1st April. There has been a non pathogenic human jump…this is very rare and the person/s involved have had no illness but were isolated. The best things for biosecurity….cover your run, allow NO WILDLIFE not just birds, so set traps for any mice,rats etc as any wildlife can carry it into your pen. I have a footdip in my garden of an approved disinfectant…in the UK it is called Jeyes Fluid and i set it up in a seed tray (covered) and dip my boots before i go in the pen. I have one pair of boots for the chicken area and for nowhere else. I hope it doesn’t last too long for you guys x

I’m so sorry to hear that 😢 I’ve been there before and it’s heart wrenching 💔 I looked up the swollen head syndrome and being viral antibiotics don’t work. Did you guys try antibiotics or did you get the flock tested? Or did you ever find out what was going on? @@BockBockBouquet I had to dispatch Speckles sadly, it was definitely swollen head and it was quite disturbing to be honest if you've never seen it before. I quarantined her pretty rapidly and no one else caught it. Chicken meds are really hard to get hold of in UK without going to a vet and paying extortionate prices, but I managed to get some from a different country and despite the effort it done nothing sadly. I made the decision this weekend to end it, the kind thing to do. We're ok here, been a bit slow on uploads this year so far, appreciate seeing yours tho they always make us smile XXX

Would like to add that there are herbs that one can add to the coop and the food (in some cases) to boost the flocks immune system. Also, I just went out the other day and since mine are restricted to a fenced in outside area and the coop some mineral blocks and other things to keep them busy. I am thinking of ways to hang things to amuse them too. I started locking them up when the neighbors free range chickens were being eaten by the biggest bobcat ever seen in these parts. I have seen his paw prints right at my coop door - scary! I have put all animal away pellets around the whole chicken area - but do not know if it stops a hungry cat.
@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet 2 жыл бұрын
We love giving our chickens herbs, they have a very strong pecking instinct so handing toys does keep them busy and not pecking each other. Ohh bobcats are scary! We had one in our yard years ago, luckily didn’t take anyone, and never returned. There are methods you can use, some more extreme than others. I have heard trapping the cat and then releasing it scares it to never come back. That’s scary to me as well. Also the urine method supposedly keeps them away. That’s one tough predator

@@BockBockBouquet My bobcat has lived here for a very long time, but due to everyone wanting to live here - has been pressured down close to the chickens. s/he has been eating the neighbors up on the edge of my property and I have seen the paw print right next to the door into the coop. Very scary for me and my dog as well. His print is at least twice the size of my German Shepherds. We also have panthers - but have not ever seen one here - but neighbors about a mile N have seen them. Many of the cow people keep donkeys to protect their herds. Here are some preventative measures to prevent the spread of disease in poultry that I use. As for tools I would keep them in your garage, and make sure to disinfect them before use for cleaning out the coop. As to how concerned you should be. If even one bird comes down with it you must cull all poultry on your property. It has a very high mortality rate, and can spread like wildfire. - I would hate to cull all my birds, since I have rare breeds, and champion show birds. You can pick it up from the feed store or even the grocery store on your feet which could infect your flock I would get a bucket of water mixed with disinfectant soap and wash your feet in that every time you go into the coop. Keep that bucket next too the coop. Change the water every few days. Or you can have a pair of boots in the coop, and only use that pair in your coop. Also keeping your run covered helps too. Preferably a solid top, but a mesh top may work too. Covered runs are best for keeping you birds safe. If you add new birds in to your flock quarantine them for a minimum of a month. I know you said you were not going to do that but it is good to know for the future, just in case. I personally quarantine for a month, then do a blood test on both flocks to ensure no disease transmission. I test for: - Avian influenza - coryza ( I think I spelled that wrong) - Salmonella To prevent wild bird coming in your yard don’t put bird suet or seeds out for them, also adding owl or hawk dummies around help I show my poultry, and they need a clean blood test to be able to show. So I have bio security measures already in place. PS - I am in south eastern Pennsylvania, so I too am worried about the outbreak of Avian influenza.
@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet 2 жыл бұрын
These are great tips! Thanks so much for your time and insight in sharing with us! The blood test is a great idea, as very common for sick birds to be asymptomatic and never show symptoms until they get your flock sick. I hope the avian flu doesn’t make it to Pennsylvania, stay safe ❤️

Right now this is contained to the Atlantic Migratory Flight Path on the East Coast. As long as breeders don’t ship any sick birds over here to California we are fine. It’s still good to take minor biosecurity measures to prevent other illnesses and respiratory diseases. Like here we make guests/chicken friends wear shoe booties and we quarantine new birds. It’s a personal choice on how careful you want to be, we free range our flock but there is always things out of our control or possibilities of things happening, but you weigh the risk. We love free ranging but it is possible our neighbors could have a sick bird and a wild bird drinks from their water, then comes and drinks from our waterers and spreads the disease. Sorry to ramble on the short answer is you are fine and good to free range your flock 👍🏼❤️🐔

Your right there’s zero reasons to worry about us but if you are a bird (chicken or parrot) anything avian it is a concern because it will kill birds. There has been only one case of this going to humans, but the virus has only mutated enough to go from bird to human and not human to human. And this person was under extremely long exposure (they are fine wasn’t serious) but just don’t go picking up any dead wild birds if you see one

Everyone is mental these days. They may have a 99.9% of survival and take 30 vaccines in 1 year. A lot of this is hearsay, just like paper masks that have zero effect on any virus.
