yes, concrete can definitely produce anxiety. It's non-forgiving with it's set time. I have been exposed to hundreds and hundreds (probably thousands) of CY of pours during my career, and it's well worth the advance planning and meeting with the concrete craftsmen to make sure everyone is on the same page before the pour.

In addition, I agree with you regarding jitterbugs. I don't prefer them. Concrete vibrators are preferred, but have someone make sure they are used properly. Too much vibration segregates the mix.

My father-in-law poured a driveway in front of our first home, a job for his daughter and newly married son-in-law. We had every conceivable issue happen that culminated in a flurry of black walnut leaves and branches falling on the finished product. At some point, I just went outside as the crew was desperately plucking leaves from the surface and rain started to fall and just said something like "well, we'll have a nice pattern of mother nature in the finish". I believe I recall the extremely stressed finisher looking up at me as if to say "thank you, I think I will be able to sleep tonight." Fifteen years later I go back to that home every month or so, which I still own and rent, and the impressions of the walnut leaves remind me of the hard work put forth that day and how something as trivial as a gust of wind can break the spirits of good men. Be kind, y'all.

Forever grateful to my brother-in-law who was a concrete contractor. When I was young, I knew I wanted to be my own boss, and work outdoors. He hired me as a know-nothing kid to join his crew. Took me just three days to realize the stress level associated with the trade wasn't for me. Ended up as a deck and fence contractor here in redwood country. Retired after thirty-eight years, having built acres of decks and miles of fences, with gazebos, pergolas, arbors, etc. thrown in to keep things interesting. I KNOW I wouldn't have lived this long had I stuck with the wicked mud.

It's fascinating to me that you can walk on the concrete with the power trowel, and that tool can affect the surface of the concrete but the boots of the worker don't really seem to dent it. I am hoping to build a pole barn here at my home in Michigan in a year or two around 30x50 with a heated floor and I wanted to try to find contractors that would let me help and watch so I could learn. Pretty sure when it comes to the slab I'm going to limit my helping to filling coffee's getting donuts. I really do like that you are getting the human element behind all of these jobs EC, your showing your viewers the value of these trades and the men and women that work them. One day some young kid watching now is going to be making a lot of money in an office somewhere, hiring crews to do work on his home and they are going to really respect and value that work because they saw one of these videos. Great job, sir.

Ah, this takes me back. Memories of forms blowing out. Panic. Scrambles to deal with approaching disaster. Most of all, memories of good friends showing up for the pour and working their butts off for no money to get the concrete in place and release that truck before it starts charging time. Our last foundation pour, we ended up short of concrete from the redimix truck. That was part of the plan because we didn't want anything left over and planned on finishing with hand mixes from a small cement mixer. So we were ready to dismiss our crew, but our friends said no. We'll stick around and help you mix to get this job finished. Those are friends, eh. The last driveway pour we did, it started to hail just as the concrete was about to kick. I freaked out, expecting it to ruin the job. But the hail didn't last long, and when the balls of ice had melted we found we had the most perfect concrete texture. Just a smooth dimpled surface, much better than the brooming we were planning to use. BTW I always enjoy your music. Nice to hear Angelina Baker on your track. So many videos I watch are smearing on computer generated glurge that gets so annoying I end up turning off the sound. Not you. You treat music properly, so it adds feeling and mood to your videos. That along with your smooth narration makes watching your videos a treat I really look forward to. Thanks for this one.

Sheeez....just reminded me of the only time I scheduled a concrete truck. A neighbor drove by and saw I needed a bigger float, and went and got one. My two helpers were running wide open with a wheel barrow as the truck could not drive into the yard. That sidewalk and turnaround I poured that day was perfect for a brief moment, then without warning the sky opened and all at once it felt like the bottom of a sky full of water dumped on us and washed the skim coat right off the top. Thankfully it was a short shower.....

I’ve seen many videos of people pouring concrete and claiming to be professionals. It’s embarrassing really. This was a nice change. These men know their trade. I’ve just retired due to injury after 30 years of concrete. Your chute man is top notch. He can kill a job if he sucks at his. They screeded correctly. Good raking. Your trowel man actually knows what pattern to be using! Such a rare thing. So many people just wander around with the machine thinking it does all the work. Well done all of you. Glad to see there are professionals in other parts of the world. We often use a large rough wood float before the aluminum instead of the jitter bug. Has a similar effect but saves some time and it’s hard to work up to much cream that way.

A long time ago, in a lifetime far, far away, I drove mixers to jobs like this. It was easy to tell the good crews from the bad, and the bad ones were bad, "More water!" was the first signal those guys were not really worried about the long-term effects of their decisions. The worst were the homeowners who would be standing in the backyard with a wife, a brother-in-law, and a high school kid, all armed with spades and leaf rakes, then wanting to move six yards of mud in 5 gallon buckets. Truth. A call to the batch plant: "I'm going to be a while." Your job here was a dream for a driver. Those days are long gone. I sit at a desk now, but I sure have fond memories of driving up to the job site and then unloading that mud. 30 years later I can still drive around town and point to the places I had a hand in building.

I remember a story from an electrician where he was doing some wiring in a mansion for some woman many years ago. Can't really remember what he was doing to start with but while working, the woman asked him if he would install power outlets in her bathroom drawers so that she could leave her hair dryer and other things plugged in and ready to use at any time. He tried to explain to her how dangerous that idea was and the likelyhood that such a thing could cause a fire. She wouldn't leave him alone though and eventually he relented and did as she asked (or rather demanded) and afterwards he changed careers to heating and air to get away from people like that.

Did most of the jobs there including loading and hauling materials, delivering the mud, batching and scheduling the trucks and a little management. Great experience, but I'm sure glad I didn't have to do for ever. Happy to be retired and considering a move back to Arizona.

This looks like the most backbreaking and dirty, yet satisfying and relaxing construction jobs. I could watch people smooth out concrete all day.

Like the time our concrete subcontractor was pouring a slab on one of our houses. It was in the country about 30 miles from the batch plant. The slab started setting up way too fast. The forman got on his phone and called in their other flat work crew. I don't know how fast that crew drove but I do know it that they rolled up in about half the time it normally took me to make that trip. They did save the slab. About a week later we learned that the batch plant had an "error" in their computer and was double batching the cement in the mix!

So instead of 5 or 6 bag it was 10 or 12? We had that happen once. It took twice as much water to wash the truck out.

That "5:30" in the dark reminded me of Vietnam. Concrete pours for runways and taxiways were done in the dark. Got too hot during the daytime. Would set up too fast. Like others, the music is spot on. Also, like others, my mind enjoys the videos, but my back doesn't miss it at all.

As a pro myself in finish Carpentry and painting. I've gotta say that I not only have learned alot from you but have also found myself thinking how to become more productive every minute. Minimizing the steps, waste and trying to get better at scheduling. Even though it's an extremely daunting task for us. I'm trying hard to stay above it, but as you said Murphys law is no joke. Thanks for your time and I for one appreciate it as I'm sure others do as well.

I have done lots of manual labor when I was much younger, I have unloaded 53 foot trailers by hand when I worked for Roadway Package, I have done home remodeling where we have made a great room starting from a bare concrete slab, I have done heating and air conditioning crawling under houses and into attics, but looking at this video, I don't envy the work those guys do in the least, when you talk about hard work there it is right there.

I freaking love this channel, it’s total entertainment for guys. it’s a form of eye candy for someone who enjoys working with their hands. You’ve done these men justice. They’d be proud that you’ve done them proud! Also, this gives a lot of people who wouldn’t normally ever see this, a chance to view and appreciate the amount of work that goes into this kind of thing. Love the content man, just love it. Keep it up, please!

I was going to ask that too. I helped my foster dad pour a slab for his brother's garage. I thought just a couple boards and a broom. Man was I wrong. Glad I was just a gopher. Anyway I got to put my initials in the back corner under his work bench.

Excellent video team. I've been there, done that from the crack of dawn to daybreak and onward. Wallowing in it and scratching for it. It's mixing science with the weather, and a massive list of other things. As I fly in to my county Airport I marvel at how green it is, but that's due to the amount of rain. So the weather is number one priority for all our wet trades. If dark clouds come over that hill, you've got twenty minutes before it lashes down, Is such cheery news from a local bystander that by lunchtime, everyone's got neck ache.

My grandfather worked with a team of guys to lay acres and acres of concrete in an industrial shipyard in the ‘70s. He told me that it was one of the hardest jobs he had to do. He had to leave after a year before it was finished. Even a man who built his own house found laying concrete very humbling.
