Paints used in this experiment:
Pebeo studio Acrylics gold and iridescent violet blue
Amsterdam white
Royal and Langnickel cerulean blue and phalocyanine blue
Mont marte purple
Paint recipes used in this experiment:
Owatrol (UK floetrol) pouring medium ~ 2 parts owatrol, 1 part paint and 1.5 parts water.
American Flood floetrol pouring medium ~ 2 parts floetrol, 1 part paint and 0.75 parts water
Water as the pouring medium ~ 1 part paint and 1 part water
PVA glue and water pouring medium ~ pouring medium made by mixing 2parts pva glue to 1 part water, then mixed 2 parts pouring medium, 1 part paint and 1 part water
Australian floetrol ~ 2 parts floetrol, 1 part paint and 0.5parts water
I then added extra water to thin down the thicker mixes.

@Josanne, I agree! I'm so glad that I found her videos!! I love that she is doing these experiments and sharing with us! Are you a pour paint artist also? I just discovered Acrylic Pouring on 6/7/22 and I've already done 7 pour Paintings and posted 4 videos on my Channel! The first 2 were actually tempera paint pours because that's all I had. The next one was with Acrylic craft paints. The next one (6/12/22) was what I consider to be my first official one, because it was done with "real" Acrylic Paints and it turned out beautifully if I do say so myself! Lol Happy Pouring!!

As a newbie this was super useful and informative. I’m in Australia and have easy access to the floetrol but am discovering that the cells can be a bit much. From your video, the water and paint combo looked the most vivid in terms of colour purity with the US floetrol adding a bit of extra interest. Thanks so much for sharing this.

Claire thank you so much for doing this experiment, it took a lot of time and effort on your part and is really appreciated. As you rightly said, art is very personal and for Dutch Pours I prefer just the water BUT with really good quality paint. Rinske Douna is a master at these pours and only uses either Windsor & Newton or Amsterdam paints. Her dutch pours are gorgeous, really etherial but not really celled. It was incredible to see how your results differed with the different products. Thank you.

The cells form with just water because a lot of cell creation is based in the density of the paints (and the addition of oil such as silicone or oily pm). I hope that’s useful to others, it’s certainly helped me since I learned about this x

Each painting has its pros and cons. It's really in the eye of the beholder. What effect you are going for. So many flow artists copy each other and don't experiment or try to be creative on their own. The flow art technique can be used in other ways, such as for florals and landscapes. Even abstracts. Don't copy everything you see, find a way to use the flow acrylics in other kinds of art. Great tutorial on using the different products, thanks!

@@Angie-zx8ft One suggestion you might try is to decide to splurge on the Aussie Floetrol, but order it from an American supplier (PixelPaintDesigns) so you don't have to pay as much for shipping. THEN.... rather than using the Aussie Floetrol as your pouring medium, try putting just an ounce or so into a shallow plastic lid (think yogurt cup lid, for example) and then, if appropriate for your style of painting, dipping a strip of acetate into it, and use that acetate as a swipe across your paint.. amazing cells result. Learned this from watching Priscilla Batzell of Expressionist Art Studio.

Thank you for showing this. I've never used the UK and US floetrol and despite everyone saying the Aussie floetrol is the best, I thought they're all pretty much the same. Watching this has now shown me. I'm in Australia, so it's all I use. I only use the glue and water mix for the base coat on the canvas. I find that Amsterdam paint with Aussie floetrol gives the best cell activation doing swipes. I'm glad you like our floetrol. I feel for anyone buying it overseas because they pay a lot more for it.
@juliegriffin2255

I think you should consider painting the canvases with one or two coats of paint prior to pouring so the texture of the canvas does not intrude so much on your otherwise lovely designs. Perhaps let the first coat fully dry, then the second coat can be wet or dry prior to the pouring. This hides a lot of spots that might also be bare under your design. Worth the time. Thanks

@@yvette_is_Mamacado a lot of times in life, we are trained to need and buy things that we don't actually need. That is true of PM and also in our diets. I have made paintings with and without PM (only water) and with and without other additives. One day, I used hand sanitizer because I did not have any other additives to try--just the hand sanitizer and water. The paintings that day were gorgeous. I have discovered that my paintings are the most beautiful when I say a prayer or set an intention right before pouring the paint. When I pray in gratitude, the paintings look the most beautiful.

Apparently Aussie Floetrol has some sort of oil in it. Cathleen at CozCreations was talking about that in her latest video, how she had trouble varnishing a painting where she had used it. She also showed us her cup of paint with the Aussie Floetrol in it, and it had an oily film over the top. Just an FYI. That's why you're seeing an uneven surface. Aussie Floetrol comes into its own in the Shelley Bloom technique : ) Loved your tutorial, thanks!

It may have had some silicone oil in the cup too. Silicone leaves oil on top of a dried painting. I clean mine before I varnish with a good rub with a paper towel. Most pourers will clean with baby wipes or mild soapy rag, then dry off with a paper towel. We all have our own ways of cleaning the up to varnish or resin.

Fab experiment. Thankyou. I think all too often we get caught up in a 'craze' where we all want something just because everyone else has it - currently seems to be the Aussie Flotrol. However, what this demonstrates is that it really is all about personal preference. Thankyou for spending your time showing us what each medium can do - side by side I can now see that I'm not that keen on the multi cell look, and instead if I were to invest in any, it would be the American, closely followed by the British.

Thank you Claire, you have saved me a lot of time and work and also convinced me that I do need to use a pouring medium for some projects and not just water. Like you I like the way the colours react and spread, if that’s the correct term, with just water. I am pretty new to all this and finding out new things all the time, like in a couple of sea/beach pours I have just done, I got cells and lacing with the white (Amsterdam Titanium white) over iridescent colours, not so much over the plain colours. All the paints were mixed with a pouring medium (1parts Owatrol to 2 parts water) - 1 part paint to 1 part pouring medium and then water if needed to get the right consistency. I’m very happy with them and luckily we have holiday accommodation, my experiments will grace their walls! And hopefully some will sell!😜 Thank you again, I follow Molly, Kinella and Rinske, but it’s so nice to hear a British voice, their ideas and recommendations. Jeanette

It was a good review of the pouring mediums, especially the Australian Floetrol which a lot of people get great results from, thank you for demonstrating it and sharing. Strictly speaking though, it’s not a Dutch Pour. A DP should be covered with the base coat colours before blowing it out. I’d love to see you trying that way because you do get lovely lacing that way. I am amazed that people so often don’t try just water because Rinske Douna and now Molly (after many years of using Floetrol) always have such beautiful results using just water. Rinske did an experiment with Floetrol and preferred it to her water only painting, but still uses just water. The colours seem to blow out in a much silkier way with just water. I use either just water with Amsterdam paints or Australian Floetrol, but I always blow the extra base coat over as this helps produce far more dramatic lacing. You don’t lose the intensity of colour.

Thank you for taking the time to create and share this video and to write out the supplies and recipes used. I wish more people were as helpful and considerate. I would have loved to see alcohol, dish soap, and hand sanitizer compared too.

I'm glad you mentioned these other additions. I'm just trying my own comparisons of pouring mediums, but haven't included these. I must add these, along with the Australian floetrol that I managed to get at huge expense (UK)!

I have to say YAY for the USA Floetrol. 🙂 I'm in the US so that's all I have access to, but to have you say that you like it best, was amazing. I shouldn't say that it's all I have access to, because there are other types and brands of pouring mediums, but I like the Floetrol the best. I personally don't like an overwhelming amount of cells, and I'm not crazy about super large ones either. I think the big cells take away from the composition of a painting, and to many small cells seem to hide the paint, or push it out of the way. Thank you for this awesome demonstration. It was the best one I've seen, and I've watched many, and tried many as well. I Love your work, and have tried a few of your ideas, without much success, but then I'm pretty new to pouring. Eventually I'll get there, and I hope I can create masterpieces like yours someday. 🙂 God Bless, and Happy Pouring.

Great demo. No nonsense. One woman poured the pouring medium on top of the paint on the canvas which was stupid! You did a great job! ❤️

I have just seen your channel and am very impressed with your talk on how to do a dutch pour and getting the right consistency paints. Do you and other British Acrylic Pouring Painting artists do exhibitions and/or do classes to get more people interested in this amazing art? I am in awe of your channel. Winnie

Wow that was a great experiment, thank you for your time and effort in making it. 👍🏼 As I'm still fairly new at pouring, been doing it about 6 months, I have only used pva with water as a medium, so this was really interesting to watch and gave me the idea that I may buy some US Floetrol. I didn't want to buy anything expensive as just starting out so made my own. Thanks again for this.

Sorry I hit send accidently before l could say thanks again. I know it had to take quite a bit of time to set everything up and then to mix all of those paints at one time. You are a blessing.

Thank you for this fascinating demo and experiment. Thinking maybe one more test... add more PVA to your own mixture to thicken the medium... Also simply loving the affect of the gold in the water version... wondering how one could add that type of golden sheen affect to a favoured medium pour eg the American or UK pour... 🤔
