Good video Mark! Just picked up 150 pounds of lead today from a boat scrap yard in Scappoose. Planning on making a bunch of 2 and 3 pound sinkers for bottomfishing. Go Huskies!

I used these with the Team Catfish weight slides to make a kzbin.infoUgkxdmsDj7fQXe77DC0l7P7ua8B3PiESUubM Carolina rig and they were perfect for the ponds I fish. I have also used them to make 3 way rigs and these work perfectly. Haven't had any issues with them snagging in rocks or in weeds yet.

I'm so thankful that I wear a full mask respirator when I pour. I was recycling some old lead weights and when I dropped one into the pot, it bursted. Lead splatter was all over my respirator. My only guess was that maybe the sinker had some moisture from within. It was an old sinker I had found on a pier years back.

Hey here’s a tip my grandpa always did when I was younger and I still use to this day, Home depot sells chain, and small tubing. I hook the chain to the eyelights and crimp it and crimp a piece of tubing through the other end of the chain. It slides way way better on fishing line, and tangles way less plus no fraying. Tight lines!

4:20 It actually only hardens quick in your mold because the mold doesn't retain a lot of heat. I make molds out of wood and it takes the lead a while to set up especially if you get it too hot.
@MarkoAbo7 жыл бұрын
phartattack Actually the mold retains a ton of heat. So much heat that after a couple of pours you can't touch it without gloves cuz you'll burn the shit out of yourself. Fish on!

Done some lead pouring myself. I've made 2 and 4 ounces star sinkers using lead obtained from friends who got them from car batteries and roofing materials. We split the ready sinkers 50/50 as I supplied the lpg gas. True hard to get lead supply nowadays, you right, I've got them from the garages, ie the wheel balance stuffs, although some are steel that don't melt easily as lead. One SUGGESTION, we can use used SPARK PLUGS, from the garage as sinkers too. They are free! Tie up 4 together and the weight at leat 2 ounces?? Fish on!!!!

I have all the lead, although I need to make my own 'ingots' the right size for the HOT POT! thanks for you're video just needed one more thing explained thanks!

Shane! I'm fortunate enough to come from a family of a bunch of old fishermen! Back when lead was both cheap and plentiful they poured it into cupcake tins and made pound and pound of pure lead ingots. I suggest asking as many old fishermen what they've got laying around and I guarantee you'll run into at least one with a boat load of lead! Good luck, be well and fish on! Mark in Oregon

Juan Hernandez cold pour. Preheat mold aswell.
@bayareaangler51036 жыл бұрын
Juan Hernandez heat your mold first. I pour a few times with no eyes to get the mold hot. Once they start pouting well with no wrinkles, then use the eyes and start making weights. Also, if you are pouring large weights you need to be able to get the lead in fast enough. I use a cast iron ladle for anything over 2oz vs a pot that drains from the bottom (those are great for small stuff).

When you melt lead do the impurities float to the top or do ya need to stir it around
@MarkoAbo5 жыл бұрын
All impurities float to the top. Just spoon it off. Be well, fish on.
@lancehenthorn175 жыл бұрын
It's best to flux your lead if you're using wheel weights. I use Buck's Beaver flux on my lead when using wheel weights. It pulls out the impurities like a dream. If it's clean lead no need to flux.
@JB-jn9kb5 жыл бұрын
You fresh water guys have no idea how bad it gets for offshore guys like me. Your pouring 8 to 10 ounce weights. I use 5 to 12 pound lead weights to deep drop 1,600 to 2,000ft deep offshore in the gulf for swordfish. I have to say, I envy how cheap it is to fish freshwater though. My weights cost $30.00 to $60.00 bucks a piece lol.

Sorry man, I don't fish for anything bigger than me! Come out west to the great Columbia River and I'll teach you to fish for Chinook King Salmon, which I'm sure tastes a hell of a lot better than any billfish. Be well and fish on man.
@lancehenthorn175 жыл бұрын
It would behoove you to invest in pouring your own weights. If I lived near you I would invest in the sinker mold and sell you sinkers for less than you're paying now. Shoot how far off shore do need to go in the Gulf to get to that depth.

are the lead in some fishing products harmful to people?
@MarkoAbo5 жыл бұрын
Any exposure to lead over a long term is harmful to your health. It's the reason why dentists used to run out of the room when taking ex rays of their patients using lead foils. But the limited exposure by the patient wasn't a problem cuz he was only exposed once a year for 15 seconds. If you're working with it just make sure you're in a well ventilated area and don't eat the stuff. Fish on!
