This is a continuation of my Lost in PA in a new J4500 video, as I joyride the State College area and make my way back to campus for a pickup, where I inevitably make a wrong turn. Enjoy!
Vehicle: 2021 MCI J4500
Engine: Detroit Diesel DD13
Transmission: Allison B500

Nice video. I noticed you manually shifting the transmission. I’m glad I’m not the only one who does that. I think ours drive better when they’re manually shifted; otherwise, they will shift into 6th gear at 35 mph....which isn’t very fun when you now have no power left merging onto a highway, lol

Truthfully, I've always felt a little nervous shifting the gears myself. But sometimes, I think I know better than the transmission haha. This is more the case in our '17 J4500s because they love to upshift as early as possible, but these newer models have been better! I've been getting downshifts to 4th at 58mph on steep hills!

i drove a bus for the first time and i didnt know that its better when you manually shift. long story short, i reached 25mph and the bus wouldnt shift in a 45. had to stop on the side of the road and shift into neutral and back into drive to drive

Does it have the Mode button? That's Performance Mode and unless your company ordered some fuel economy program, it will run better in Performance Mode and wind the gears out longer.

@@eugew23 lol. I have gotten myself in to an extremely tight situation 3 years ago at a restaurant with a 17 footer Penske moving truck. It was an extremely tight small parking lot. I had to have a friend guide me out of parking space since people parked on either side of me!

For as big and as high as this bus is, you seemed like you were very comfortable with it getting it in and out of that one tight spot; are you comfortable with this bus now? Just from listening to this, I SO want to experience this bus with you driving. :-D I like the confidence you seem to have. Would have loved to hear how this coach handled on the mountains between Penn State and Lewistown (which is about 15 miles away). Awesome as always, my friend. :-D

I've only driven coaches buses like this for two years now, but operating one of these has become second nature to me. I don't have the experience of veteran line drivers, but I have been in enough rough spots in the Washington, DC area to know what do to get by in a pinch. Remind me next time I go to Penn State to take 322 through the mountains haha. I have been taking the smoother, easier interstate roads in the last few months.

@@eugew23 Why not!? :-D LOL Put those downshifting skills and jakes/retarders to work on that big baby! I missed riding the MC9's and 102D3's from Greyhound back in the 80's up and down those mountains. I especially loved it if the MC9's in particular had airbrakes! MUSIC to this guy's ears! :-D

All Prevost buses the last few years are governed at no more than 75 mph which is the tire rating but companies can set a lower limit. I would think MCI is the same.
