POV Daily Driving a DSM with a PPG Dogbox

People have asked how streetable the PPG gearset is, well, here's a little clip of driving around town with it. It's a bit of a learning curve but not that difficult. I've learned you just need to be firm and direct. No need to slam gears like you hate it as some day, just be direct and shift when you mean it.
The biggest downside? It's LOUD. The camera doesn't really do it justice. Not only that but your neighbors will ask you what's broken in your car all the time. Oh ya, and it's easy as hell to money shift...don't ask.
TL:DR - Can you? Hell ya, should you? Not unless you have to lol

If I had this in my car I wouldn’t be able to stay under the limit. Hearing start to wind up and then not go all out is so hard to listen to. My ears want you to floor it so bad. I wouldn’t be able to resist

How long have you been used the dog box? Maintenance for dog box is it same like normal trans? Nice setup anyway..

It's a GoPro Fusion 360 degree camera actually, so ya, each lens does 180 degrees

Im super new to dogbox and all that sequential gearbox, could u pls make a more in depth video teaching how to drive dogbox since I have been trying to find an in depth video on youtube yet cant seem to find any that really is useful

It's not a sequential gearbox. It just has straight cut teeth. Have you ever heard an old manual Honda in reverse? Same sound 😉

Is that a downshift at 2:10 or so? Picked up a dsm with a dog box and from what I’ve gathered, drive it with conviction. If I’m out cruising on the highway, in 5th, and wanted to downshift to 3rd, would you go from 5th to N to 3rd? Or straight from 5th to 3rd.

I’m about to pull the trigger on a PPG dog box. Did you keep the stock 5th gear? I think that would help for cruising immensely. Did u put it together yourself or have a shop do it?

Hey man, great vid. With the new gear ratios the max speed on each gear is lower or higher? I was thinking they would be lower but I am having mixed infos from others that have drove with that gearset.

The PPG gears are taller, 150+mph is no problem in 4th gear.

How does the dogbox shift? Compared to a normal trans at least?

It doesn't use syncros but rather large dogs and straight cut gears. So it can shift at any RPM with no issue but to down shift you need to rev-match because there's nothing there to slow the gears down to match their speeds when shifting.

Why is a non-seq dogbox so much easier to money shift than a standard gearbox?

because there are no syncros, just large dogs that can engage at any speed

I thought you could change gears without the clutch?

You sort of can but you need to release the load from the gears first and it just wears the dogs quicker. So it's better just to drive it like a normal transmission.

Is there an alternative that isn't as loud? I'm building my 95 gsx and will have at the min 600 hp maybe a little more if I'm lucky. I have the money for one but..that noise would drive me insane I couldn't do it.
