Welcome! Today we're following a Dutch emergency team with police motor vehicles and an ambulance. Paramedics are called in for a medical emergency. Their patient is in mortal danger and needs to be transported to the University Medical Centre in Leiden as fast as possible. To get there in time they request an emergency escort from the police. The emergency room approves and four police officers on bikes are sent in.
Leiden is a midsized densely populated city in the west of the Netherlands. In normal traffic, this route will take about 30 minutes, let’s see how fast these officers get there.

I work as a paramedic in a german city right on the dutch border and just once I had the priviledge to be escorted by the dutch police like this. The german police doesn't do this and leaves us to fend for ourselves, but when we transfered a dutch patient from the ICU of the hospital in our city to the ICU of a dutch hospital closer to his hometown they gave us this escort from the open border all the way to the destination. All the dutch officer on the lead motorcycle said to me when we met up at the border was: "Stay on my tail at all times, ignore the others." and off we went. The three other officers ran circles around us, buzzing through on open lanes or in between traffic or even along bike paths - but the lead officer kept a smooth and steady pace during the entire ride. As an emergency driver who is NOT used to this at all, it was an amazing feeling to cruise through city streets without a care in the world. I think I never even used the brake for almost the whole trip, because the changes in speed where so gradual and they kept us rolling so well that I just didn't need to. These officers are certainly skilled and provide excellent service. Unfortunately they were already gone after we transfered our patient into the care of the hospital, so I couldn't thank them in person.

Dutchy here. Note that it is NOT advised to break the speed limit to clear the lane. If you get an automated ticket you still have to pay and then have to proof you are innocent. If there's no fire truck or ambulance on the picture it will be damn hard to do so. Police officers won't write a ticket though, they are human and have actual brains. Camera's don't.

It's advised to not break any traffic rules, except when following police direction. They are trained for this, you are not. Don't be the idiot that tries to think for the police and causes another incident. If they wave you through a red light, drive through the red light. The commander is indicating exactly when they cross traffic lights and any fines you might incur can be matched against those times to get dismissed, since indications by police or other authorized officials overrule the lights.

This is all part of training. Every driver knows to move aside, clear roundabouts and to not panic. Meanwhile, emergency vehicle drives know it costs 8 seconds for people to respond to the 2-tone siren. So they anticipate on that while driving. Meanwhile motorcops know how to make a sort of relay race out of intersection clearing.

Main reason for this kind of transports is the prevention of stopping and going in traffic. The goal is that the ambulance drives as smooth as possible and the motor police makes room to do so. So speed can be a extra reason and is a bonus, but is not the main reason to do this kind of transport. Although sometimes for transport of donor organs speed is of the essence. On board of these Dutch ambulances is a lot of life saving equipment and highly trained personal so they work on the patient during transport.

Story time: When I was about 1-2 years old I had a fit and was living in a place called Horsham in the UK with my mum, dad and grandparents my mum called an ambulance which arrived within 3 minutes I was loaded in the back and the nearest hospital was in another Town called Worthing which in normal rush hour traffic is about 45 minutes to an hour because of the traffic we got a police escort by 1 police car and it only took us 12 minutes to get there. When I went in my dad spoke to the paramedic and he asked him what speed he hit and he said and I quote “I must of hit 120mph”

Here in Japan, Doctors have the same power. The law states they have complete authority over the first responders in order to save a life. Paramedics / EMTs have to contact the hospital and follow directions of the Physician on call. If a human is in need of IMMEDIATE EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE by these Doctors, the Doctor can command Police and Fire Department escort or even helicopter transport if necessary.

That entire operation was beautifully choreographed and superbly executed. Those officers deserve a commendation for their superb effort. Having driven an ambulance in San Diego, California in my youth, I can attest to how difficult it can be moving through traffic, and as my experience was in the mid-fifties, the difficulty factor has grown many times over.

@Dutch3DMaster
@Dutch3DMaster 3 ай бұрын
With the difference that wails, yelps or anything other than a two-tone is not allowed here. More than one siren causes the problem of creating more conflict, because of how different siren sounds are capable of reaching different distances at the same time. The main thing to do here is pay attention: see 1 motorcyclist? Expect a second one. That last thing is not going to benefit from different sirens.

I saw an similiar situation, but there it was a busdriver whom helped the paramedics, as he blocked several drivelanes for other vehicles and as the Ambulance was driving in the same direction, was stalling the traffic so there were no other cars coming from the back of the Ambulance. And the Bus had another advantage for the ambulance. it had Direct control for the Trafficlights! On this busline the Busses have a system integrated whom gives them priority over normal traffic so they are not blocking the traffic. This was an advantage in this case, as the Ambulance had straight green lights the whole way to the General Hospital. In my Hometown all! busses have this system integrated and that since the End of the 80s.
@Dutch3DMaster
@Dutch3DMaster 3 ай бұрын
Ambulances can be outfitted with the exact same system, and instead of being GPRS based for buses, it's on-request for ambulances when outfitted on the traffic light installation. 7:20 that road is notorious for over 60 or so years. Ever since the 1960’s there were plans to build additional roads leading from this highway to Leiden, Voorschoten and the towns surrounding. As mentioned at the start of this video, it’s densely populated and each plan hit rock bottom. Now after all those years a kilometers long tunnel is being build to relieve this road and to ensure smooth circulation. Fun fact I te,member a pass over another road, but the road never was build. There was a similar scenario filmed in the UK a few years ago, a transplant organ had to go from i think it was Harlow in Essex to a central London Hospital @ 30 miles and it was extremely time critical. It was in many ways more difficult due to the huge amounts of traffic as they entered London and the Essex Police handed over to the London Met police. I was only a few weeks into my career in South Africa when we picked up a police officer who had been shot. I had not even been signed off as a competent responder at the time but as the lowest medically skilled person I was told to keep up with the escort and to ensure that Ikept the siren on a constant tone so as to enable other vehicles to distinguish that multiple vehicles were "in convoy" I was more concerned about keeping the ride as smooth as possible and keeping my colleagues updated if I needed to alter speed or turn so they had time to grab a rail so they didn't get injured. Fortunately it was late evening so traffic wasn't too bad but I was shaking like a leaf when the adrenaline started to drop.

As a dutchie: Such a great video. Been in a dutch ambulance 2 times, and did not have such impressive escorte, but it is great to know that it exists in cities that really need ... One funny (or should I say worrysome ?) note around 14.35, where the officer had to push a button to take a ticket and open the gates for the rets of the escorte to get in ... Almost perfect, but some improvements ahead !

also for the people who do not live in The Netherlands, the sirens aren't very loud. you can't hear the siren unless they are directly behind you. When you have music playing in your car, you do not hear them at all.

The sirens itself are deafening... it's the sound-proofing of todays modern cars that is the biggest problem in hearing sirens.

@@weeardguy When you have flitsmeister running on your phone, it signals if a ambulance is coming your way. You can already plan ahead to get out of the way. They should introduce a new EU law where newer cars can get a signal if a Ambulance is coming their way.

@@Arcadepown They tried this by means of experiment by overruling all FM signals (and maybe also use the traffic-information style signals to switch on the radio or increase the volume) so the radio would play the siren. It was expensive (because of the FM license) and as a result not further developed, also because around the same time the smartphone and some of the aids that it can provide for this became popular.

Ok, here we go. There is a escort of 3 or more motorcycles, there are also situations where there is 1 police car and 2 motorcycle officers. The two officers infront are called ''spitsers'' the officer in either the car or on the motorcycle that is close escort to the ambulance is the commander. There will also in other cases be a tail vehicle. the Ambulance being a first responder vehicle with full sirens and alarms going is automaticly the tail vehicle. When a officer appears on say a intersection. And its clogged. The moment a officer appears with full lights and sirenes and moves his hand up its a halt command. That officer is now in charge of that intersection. All traffic is commanded to stop, regardless of lights, right of way or other circumstances. The officer will then direct traffic as needed, These commands may not be disregarded. If the officer tells you to move, you move. You are however not allowed to break the speed limit to conform to the officers command. The normal traffic rules resume once the officer who gave the halt command, leaves the intersection. Officers under these circumstances ( I.e escort ) Are allowed to do things usually not permitted. Pass on the right, go trough red, break the speed limit exc, the goal is the ambulance does not stop rolling so the patient and paramedics treating him have the calmest enviornment possible. Commands that the police use are part of the Dutch driving examination. In my time several questions would be on handsignals exc and what they mean.

Training, training and more endless training. Keeping up with radio-traffic while also keeping up with what is happening around AND behind you (mind you, the ambulance could stop suddenly for life-saving care to be given to the patient) takes a serious amount of training. The Dutch TV-program 'Blik op de Weg' followed them a few times: unfortunately, no subtitles, but it hopefully gives you an idea: Part 1: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJCnnph8bNCjg6c Part 2: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYm8oqSMZa91oJY Part 3: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZTTg3x8mbamjK8

Epic music makes the drama perfect, doesn't it? You have to think about it. We do everything humanly possible to save injured people... like in the video. But still we have been fighting each other for thousands of years, nobody cares if you have financial problems and mental problems and if you are healthy, you are hardly noticed because you are fine anyway. What a world.

I find it interesting to see that the ones that had slower reaction times were the ones with a non-Dutch license plate 😅 Though it's not really illogical, it still baffles me.

Sadly we don't have escorts like this in Czechia. But at least we have rendez vous system, in serious cases doctor car response in advance of the ambulance, provides first major care to the patient before the ambulance van arrives. On the way back to the hospital, I saw in multiple cases doctor car driving slowly through the intersection and therefore block it for upcoming ambulance. But it's not a rule and always a case, we don't have special services like this.

if one rider is staying with the ambulance and calling the route on the fly to the other 3 outriders, then that is the method taught by the metropolitan police SEG (special escort group), who train police form all around the world in this method, though for very busy places like the centre of London they opt for whistles rather than sirens, as sirens are too common, unlike whistles.

You are allowed to break the speed limit briefly or run a red light. Check that, certainly not true in the uk.

I am an E.M.T. here in Germany. I've driven thousands of bluelight drives to various hospitals. I cannot imagine, and I mean this in all seriousness, that I would have gotten there any quicker with a cop escort. Firstly, when you have a patient in the back , you have to drive relatively normally, otherwise they will get thrown around too much on curves and by uneven road services. Secondly ( and I fully accept that german drivers get the fuck out of the way very quickly) when I switch the blues and twos on , it's like Moses parting the Red Sea !
