I dont ride horses and i dont get it but im assuming its not the right tack to the horse's job? Ive pnly rode two horses in my life, the last one i did was a shorter horse and i was a fat little kid XD i have been around a large horse though didnt ride it, he was apparently wild and i didnt read the signs that said to not walk up to the coral, i did, i instantly started petting the thing and it looked almost traumatized, they were slowly gathering a herd of wild horses because i think there was a fire going over the land they were on so they were being kept together in a large coral until the fire was out, than theyd be returned, he was the stud of the herd and was kept seperated temporarily to keep from pregnancies, later in the day they were brought back because the fire had been put out successfully and they could return, it was very small but because of the area, they were afraid if they didnt move the herd, they wouldnt catch the fire, but they did and the horses went back, the male though was beautiful, heavy bodied jet black with a small bit of very dark brown speckling on his nose and around his eyes, this horse could have bodied me through the fence, i doubt he was in there because the fence was actually keeping him but rather because he didnt feel like wasting his energy, but he clearly came from a bloodline that wasnt wild but he himself was a part of a wild herd and he was BIG his shoulders rested well over the other horses, he looked like a shire when the rest were apploosas and kuntucky saddlers and Tennessee Walkers, but they were all beautiful regardless, granted i think i may have traumatized him by running up and basically grabbing his face

I had the opposite response when i switched to dressage. My hip flexor tendon isnt nearly as tight and i dont suffer from back pain anymore. I only ride in a jump saddle now when i am actively jumping i do all of my flat work dressage. I found a love and passion for eventing through dressage as we change and adapt i actually dread show jump day because my legs always hurt after jump schooling because of the stirrup length change 😂
@JoB-gh8jn
@JoB-gh8jn 8 ай бұрын
I remember one of my trainers taking my stirrups away one day to get me down properly in the saddle and it changed my posture so much for the better and I had the same positive response as you and I only used my jump saddle when actually training or competing and got myself a good all around saddle that was super comfy. I’ve not had horses since my teens (I’m 36 now) but I can still remember that lesson where my trainer had me galloping in a circle without stirrups shouting “posture” and telling me to sink deeper into the saddle. She wanted my legs “to grow 10 cm” from that exercise 😅

The stirrups being so long are so true. I’m a Hunter/Jumper and I have only ridden in a dressage saddle so many times. The first time I ever ridden in a dressage saddle my words were, “These stirrups are too long.” My trainer just said that’s how they’re supposed to be, longer then they’d usually be in a jumper saddle. She eventually had to make the stirrups way shorter so I could actually ride in the saddle, 😂.

I was an event/combination rider before switching to full hunter/jumpers. I still trained my jumpers up to at least first level dressage and would ride dressage and practice shoulders in, haunches in, lead changes, extended trot, etc. when flatting said horses at shows lol. My last horse before having to retire due to health issues was a stunning 17hh dapple bay dutchy who was amazing in dressage due to his lofty gaits. Whenever I would school him on the flat at shows we’d get compliments from the prix riders ❤ he wasn’t great over fences as he was very green so it was nice to get the recognition for all the work we were putting into him. :)

I’ve ridden Hunter/jumpers for 30 years, and I’ve always done a LOT of basic dressage as part of my flat work sessions. Lots of lateral work, especially (shoulder in, haunches in, leg yielding, even half pass). I’ve always just ridden in my jumping saddle. I wonder if a dressage saddle would be more comfortable? Probably better to stick to my jumping saddle, bc I use some lateral moves during show jumping to get my horse over to a straighter track, to push him out in a bending line to create room for another stride if needed, etc. Also, I think it would feel so alien to ride in a dressage saddle with SUCH long stirrups! I do lengthen my stirrups for flatwork, but not THIS much! 😂

I’ve done western saddles they are preferred for very tight turns English they are ideal for jumps and posting Dressage are SO comfortable but hate the stirrup length And bareback which is what I prefer ironically? My take on each disciplines reigns lengh Western: I prefer this one loose, loose, loose all day let’s neck reign English: I feel like I’m in their face constantly and they are cranking their necks and I always end up having to be reminded to tighten them since I want them loose. Jumps for obvious reasons I got great at quickly tightening and loosening Dressage: similar to English but tighter? Haven’t done liberty yet but I feel like this would be preferred for me overall
