I was in the SSO probably before you were both born, I left in 90, I was associate principal viola there then in the BBC symphony . The SSO used to do this very well. Also in one of the BBC tours to Japan we played the adagietto as an encore every night. Meanwhile the rest of the orchestra, apart from the strings and harp , were already in the pub. There was this (very fine) principle clarinet player in the Rochester Orchestra & Chorale (Minnesota) who sat immediately in front of me (I was playing 3rd horn at the time) who HATED IT if anyone EVER tossed their pencil onto their music stand anywhere in his vicinity, but that was particularly true for me, with my stand only inches from the back of his head. I totally get it. The desk of the Manhasset stand acts like an amplifier, and even a tiny pencil creates a sudden & rather loud metallic noise when someone, after scratching some frantic notes in the music, hurriedly tosses their pencil down before their next entrance. Many years later I'm still rather careful about it. When Brett drops is pencil onto his stand (46:15... PLANG!) I immediately thought of that clarinet player. LOL

Brett sinks into orchestral mode like a glove. Don't think either of them has forgotten anything about their days in the orchestras. Pretty amaaazzzing.

They talked about how they miss it. They love performing their own shows but being part of an orchestra is something else. I'm sure that if they were given the opportunity to go back to orchestra just once, for the pleasure of playing a symphony on stage with other musicians, they would do it in a heartbeat. 😊

Yes, I remember. BTW, Ray Chen talked about how much Brett had improved with the Mendelsohn performance and here we get to see how relaxed his wrist is and how he conserves the bow. Very satisfying and so happy for him! @@MissTwoSetEncyclopedia

@@graceonaga3094 Oh, I loved that video where Ray reviewed their progress over the years ! Their playing have really improved a lot. I think that getting new violins and having the opportunity to perform on stage a lot have helped them step up their games. Plus I really like that they practice what they preach. They don't just rest on their laurels but always try to improve and push themselves. And it really pays off, we can see the results. Props to them 👍🏻

@@graceonaga3094 What made me laugh was Brett constantly looking up and taking glances at the invisible conductor and/or concertmaster. 😄 Which actually makes me wonder if they didn't have a video recording on a screen in front of them ; in that case Brett may have been looking at the real conductor and concertmaster of the orchestra they were following...

Love this so much! Hope you bois had a bubble tea after that epic rehearsal, you deserve it...that's a real workout! Viola gang here; spent over 30 years in local community orchestra. We were never good enough to play Sym. 5, but did perform Mahler 2. It is so special to read comments from people who never had a chance to sit in an orchestra setting and feel what it is like (being surrounded by the immense wall of sound that envelopes you as you perform your part). Yes, it truly is remarkable...Thanks Brett and Eddy for sharing your talents with us, and keep opening the doors to classical music for all!

As a trumpet player in the orchestra, I had a perception that the violins were playing ALL THE TIME! I was amazed at how many rests you had. Also, were the bowings marked in the music? It seemed like you were bowing together the vast majority of the time, but it was obvious when one was down bowing and the other was up bowing. Thanks for sharing.
