Where i live they put out wood images of kids running or holding a red ball. Its instinct to slow down if in the corner of your eye you see kids on the side of the road. You feel a little sily once you notice they arent real but it is very effective!

A lot of neighborhoods in Hawai‘i don’t have crosswalks, so children have to cross the road in order to get to places like the beach. We stop and look both ways, but it’s dangerous when a car is SPEEDING, because it means they can come out of nowhere faster than they would be able to stop when they see a child crossing.
