I've literally been the Stephanie before. My friend's ex was extremely controlling and threatening. He was extremely racist and made very violent jokes/comments all the time. He does the whole hot and cold. Super sweet to her when they're alone but the second others are involved he's controlling, aggressive, and hateful. One day i had enough of him because he pulled a gun out at a friend's birthday party for bo reason and it scared her so i told him to get that thing out of their house and told him that it was stupid to do it. It soon turned sour when i told him that he needs to think of others comfortability including his girlfriend, my best friend. He asked why i didn't like him and i straight up to his face said that he was selfish, controlling, and had anger issues. He yelled at her face and caused a hige scene that almost involved the police. And note, he had been doing horrible things up until this point and she had tried to break up with him but was too scared to. He belittled her, told her she deserved to get hit because she wasn't doing everything he wanted, and told her a scary story of how he chased down and ran his ex's car off a dirt road and a ditch and drove off because 'the bitch deserved it'. He was cheating on her and made her hispanic family extremely uncomfortable because he was very racist, like made lynching jokes, and talked highly and so on. I knew he was gonna he violent and unfortunately when i was away, he did. He punched her in the face and was chasing her down, all while threatening her life. She fortunately ran to our local fire house and got help. This was the one time i never wanted to be right. I have never hated someone til i met him. Thankfully she's healing and in a mich better relationship. Im so proud of her.

Oh man now I’m even intrigued about the other characters. Would Jen be actually enthralled by a public proposal or would she be humiliated? Is she aware of her partner’s treatment towards herself? How long are they in a relationship? What is her story? And did Stephanie try to warn Jen or confront this guy before? What held her back, Jen’s fragility - this guy’s wrath? Or both? There’s also the implication regarding Jen’s family situation because he described themselves as “most important people”. So much to unpack in a few minutes of dialogue. Good stuff.
@wartgin
@wartgin 2 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, a lot of times Stephanie can't say anything too direct to Jen while Jen is still in the honeymoon or excuses phase of a relationship. All that happens is that Jen herself makes the decision to cut contact with Stephanie leaving Jen without resources when she realizes she needs to leave/end the relationship. If Stephanie can be subtle enough that Jen is not motivated to make the break then she will either still be around or easily contacted (if the jerk forced a break) when Jen realizes what's really happening.

Yeah, you’re exactly right. I’ve experienced the same sensation in real life. With the “subtly abusive” characters specifically, that “I can’t put it into words” thing is intentional. They keep themselves just in line enough that _technically_ you can’t prove squat. It’s all to keep you doubting yourself. That’s also why they ask about specific examples when you finally try to talk to them about their behavior, like this guy does. They can’t manipulate as well when the focus is on a vague pattern. The more details, the more material they have to work with to twist things in their favor. It’s all about having power over you. Someone who’s REALLY listening and cares about your comfort does NOT need to have power over you. They might ask for examples of something that upset you, but it’s never because they want to “prove your feelings wrong.” They believe your feelings are RIGHT-that if you think there’s a problem, then there’s a problem, and they’re here to help fix it with you. You’ll know the difference by whether you feel _more_ or _less_ comfortable the longer the confrontation goes on. Sorry for the random essay, haha. I’m very passionate about people knowing how to avoid red flags. Please trust your gut and stay safe, random internet stranger. TLDR: You’re right, and the abusive ones are that way on purpose. Please stay safe.

Not to the same extreme, but if im really mad at someone i'll try to act innocent to avoid any sort of rejection while still trying to piss them off. It's a REALLY bad habit that i've mostly been able to kick (ex bf used to use it on me and so i started using it on others) sorry if this is out of nowhere, you just seem to know a lot abt red flags and i was wondering if you could give some insight. TLDR: 10/10 Narcissist Very accurate narcissist. Denial, redirect/project on others, gaslight (everyone yells, it's normal), and then aggressively coerce. The subtle heavy breathing was key. Fight or flight kicking in for the narcissist now confronted with a reality that doesn't match the one in their head. "I'm a GOOD guy. Where is this coming from?". You nailed the fact that once he knew Stephanie didn't see him as a "Good Guy" he didn't have to pretend to be nice to her anymore, and got more aggressive. This is exactly how it goes down (personally seen it regularly) and the narcissist either walks away (run from the cognitive dissonance in denial) or if they can't, they fight extremely hard in any way they can (almost like a child throwing a tantrum but a grown adult) to convince you that what you just said is fake and/or rude, you are a terrible person for saying it, and everyone should know you were wrong and they were right. Donald Trump is a good example and easy to analyze because he talks so much. EX: he lost his mind over people saying he had small hands. No one but a narcissist I think would fight so hard to discredit a statement that would have gone away on it's own.

I'm honestly grateful for these videos. I've encountered people like this many times and used to think I was the problem, I was the messed up wack one, I was the one with the wrong idea, but seeing this kid of behavior acted out and seeing all the comments call it like it is, my thoughts that I might've just been getting mistreated are seemingly getting validated and I'm doubting myself less.

Seeing this reminds me of Dirty John, a Netflix Series. Seasons 1 & 2 are different stories, but focus on S1. The way this video ended specifically is what reminds me of it. It’s dark & based on true events, highly recommend it.

the despair & helplessness & anger i felt .. .the running of verbal circles around me... Well done. And LADIES- if you can sense the manipulation ..... DARVO him back! (deny / attack / reverse victim and offender). We live in a world where we have to hold our aggression inside but I know that if the laws on the matter were more lenient then I would just kill him. because organisms need to defend themselves against this sort of acrid hostility , and settling conflict by duel is pretty effective and satisfying
