In the '50s and '60 my family sent money to the African Mission nearly every month- at least 5 shillings a month. My young sisters used go from door to door in the local rural area collecting pennies for Africa. But I never heard of anyone ever collecting money for Ireland's poor people.

It's so terrible, we had Mike Wallace in the south who interviewed the poor, then we had a war on poverty which actually started federal aid. It was from his journalism it started a storm of consciousness. I know helpers at food banks, I used to help and never thought I would need them, until I did.

NOTHING HAS CHANGED!!! I'm living in a homeless hostel in Wicklow town. 36yrs of age. And there are worse off than me, people living in tents if they are lucky enough to have one. I lived for a year in a burned out pub in Arklow town the 56 or kitty's as it was called. No power no running water

This has changed, Yürak Hunt , the Catholic Church no longer actually cares about real charity, and the bloody hard and thankless task of delivering it, 24/7 - to all who ask. It cares about Social Justice Political Issues, being thought of as a new swinging 'merciful' group, or just fitting its few remaining grey hairs into secular Ireland - and its Agenda. So just blame the old-time Catholic Church for all your problems .. and you'll find a lot more sympathy from the comments here.

I lived in the wild. Built my shelter, trapped or gathered my food from nature, with only a handful of simple items. I don't understand why people don't see that being homeless is often a mental illness caused by depression or other issues derived from suppression by big industry or social disassociation from life experiences. We can survive without having things(shelter, food, water, electricity, funds,etc) provided for us if we know how to provide the necessities for our selves. Water, shelter, food... these are basic needs, so if you can provide these three for yourself(even just out in nature) you'll be just fine, and richer for experience after you struggle. Homelessness is the symptom of HOPELESSNESS. Sort of Apathy. At least from one perspective...there are plenty.

Sorry to hear that. I have never been homeless myself (at least not yet), but from what I see and hear, been homeless now is much worse than what it was 50 years ago. At least back then, there were Christian organisations which would help feed and try to give shelter for people on the streets, and even if you were outside on the street at night, it was safe. Nowadays, it's dangerous to be homeless because of the violence. People get stabbed to death or burned alive in tents or in their sleeping bags. Also, nobody give people money to the homeless because they have this notion that every single homeless person is a drug addict. I think this is completely wrong. Yes, there is a handful that are, but for the rest, they are good people who have been abandoned by society or their families. I try to give a euro or two to homeless people here and there when I have money myself (i'm on the dole for over a year now only getting crap money due to my depression destroying my chances of getting employment somewhere) and when my parents and my sisters are not with me or around (because they are the same as everyone else in society, they judge me and tell me that i'm stupid and am feeding their drug addiction that they are (in their eyes) bad people which is not true. My family tell me that 'They are homeless because they are on drugs or they are a bad person and their families don't want them. Even if they are (which is not true for most), they should be helped than be thrown to one side to basically die or go insane. I know i'm not good person, but I try to do a good deed when I can, even if it's only to give a quid or two to a homeless person on the street.

Mass in the 60's for most people was a fashion show and a show of status. People in jobs dictated by their allegiance to religious practice went to mass as a duty. Those who were either at the margins or economically independent of the church, few in 1960, did not bother with Mass.

Hostel accomadation and help is "encouraging " people to be homeless, Gosh the attitude to homelessness was very harsh in those days. And what is the relevance in whether they go to mass or not. I'm a spiritual woman but still I don't see the relevance in that.

Accents & turn of phrase fascinate me, from decades past. The voices are soft, rounded and well spoken. The likes of Radharc will never put out a comprehensive vista of their recordings for public viewing, because a lot of what was filmed is still, heavy with meaning and social clout.
