My grandmother taught me as a young girl never laugh at anyone, you don't know what they been threw, it can happen to anyone. Get your education and skills and work hard while you are young. Don't drink, smoke or gamble , this will make you broke. 2nd Wisdom: always pay your rent on mortgage on time. Have life insurance car insurance and home or renter insurance. you need shelter, buy food in bulk. Always save your money, live frugal. Buy a home you can afford, on one salary, fix it up little by little. Take care of what you have. Clean your house or apartment each week. Wash and dry your dishes every night, you will never have bugs. Never leave garbage in the house. Put your garbage in the trash cans tied it up outside. Learn to cook your food, grow herbs and vegetables. Income tax money can fix things about the house. Have hope and faith, be strong. Learn how to paint and fix your place, my husband and I were young when we brought our house, we painted our house, inside and outside. it was a lot of work, but it was worth it, my parents and grandmother helped with the cleaning. You can do it also. Remember if you don't work hard when you are young, you get no Social Security, or a pension. what is going to happen to your life when you get these people age. Peace and love to all, get wisdom and knowledge.

How is she going to buy the materials needed to fix her home? It's not free! It's easy to criticize and make ignorant comments but when will we start to see this lady is us. The average American family is 1 paycheck away from homelessness. Or did you fail to see this with the recent car industry and banking bailouts, housing market crash, etc. Judgment is cheap, helping costs something. IMO, this should be embarrassing to no one other than those people who she let into her house and the people in her community. Did I see a NOI guy there, dressed in garb? If so, where's the delegation of men sent to that sister's house to take an inventory of her needs and see to it that they are met? Assuming that she has no husband, sons or male relatives. None of this stuff is anything that the "government" is supposed to take care of. Where's the delegation from the church (or churches). Where's the community organization, put together to see to the needs of those who can't take care of themselves? Where I grew up, in the country, we took measures to stop up all the holes around the house to keep snakes out. An periodically burned sulfur to drive them away. If you saw one, you dealt with it. That's life in the country. This is what you do if you live in the country. Snakes live in the country just like people do. Look, I lived around folks and homes just like her's growing up. People in the community stepped up and helped out, if they were allowed, and if the people in need weren't trifling. There is much more to these stories than an 8 minute video can address. Again, poverty of the heart, mind and spirit needs to be addressed more than anything else.

Many counties/cities in Mississippi do not have "Slum Lord" Ordinances in place. There is nothing that forces landlords/property owners to maintain their rental property. These landlords/property owners are allowed to charge whatever they want In rent for houses that are in horrible condition. If you want to help people like this lady, go to your local city hall and check to see what kind of ordinance is in place to protect renters. If there isn't one then go to your city council meetings and demand that an ordinance be put in place. Many people living in poverty just need the chance to get out, they need the protection of their city, and the support of the community. Pressuring city officials to adopt an ordinance that provides some guidelines for landlords/property owners have to follow will at least ensure that the houses are not falling apart around the people living in them.

Not being from Mississippi i don't know the way it works but if it's the poorest state wouldn't there be low cost of living? If that's the case wouldn't taxes be low and if not can't there be something done to lower them to bring in some factories and warehouses, jobs that don't require any education....it appears on these videos that no one is on welfare so i would assume most would want to work. It's just a thought it's ridiculous we spend all this money on everything but helping our own people. It might be poor here but i was just recently homeless in Cincinnati living under a bridge, I would love to have lived in one of those dilapidated buildings. It seems that people help each other out here and definitely make due with what they have. Being homeless in Cincinnati most people look the other way, there's even hate crimes committed against the homeless. I love the land and the people down here and would love to see work come to this state, i want to stay here but couldn't if i wasn't working. There's no way i could be homeless down here, i couldn't imagine....also while I'm rambling on the people of flint, MI still have POISONOUS WATER! I wish we could work together and fix this country!

And what’s sad is these slums still want rent money for the beat in falling in houses that they rent out. There’s a housing authority in Shelby Nc by the name of Harrill and associates. I am from Shelby Nc and I was looking for reasonable pricing for rent and housing and this place rents in the baddest parts of towns and the worst of the houses and collect $ off of people for poor living conditions and I get so sick of that!! How do you rent to people with a falling in home and holes and roaches and rats and snakes☝️ I don’t understand how you could greedily do that in the US? I don’t. And now I’m in SC and the beauty of the state is only a vision. I am living with my boyfriend now and his home is old and need so many repairs yet and still the rent office wants theirs and it kills me because we as a couple work so hard to pay these bills and it’s not worth it but we can’t afford anything else here because the rent is high as hell in SC if you wanna love decent you gotta pay big money I mean big big money. One bedrooms go for 700 or better round here and I’m a damn waitress my boyfriend does landscaping work and I feel so bad for him because he is the main payer of bills in the home and it’s just too much with all the bills we have and the insurance the gas the maintenance of everything we pay out of pocket and the electric bill is so high in this Trailor it is insane! I cry a lot because you don’t know what to do and who to reach out to for help??? A lot of people are living this way and it’s not just in Mississippi I tell you that straight up!!! All of us are tacking our house up round here and making the best of what we have because it’s a fight with the state and authorities.... the Trailor I stay in is very old and don’t get me wrong I love the way it is made and everything about the vintage Trailor but it is so old that it is falling apart I mean literally. Anyway this isn’t about me RN this is about Mrs berry and I will be doing all I can to reach out to her!!!! I don’t have much but god knows I’ll send what I have to Mississippi. If we don’t come together ain’t no use in discussing this matter. If 1 million people sent $1 to Mrs berry just think of how that would help her. Please y’all let’s come together??? Please? Just send $1 to this woman please and I’ll be checking to make sure it’s legit and ain’t nobody tryna get money for these you tube videos and splitting checks that are for her... cause oh they out here lurking. Believe that part! If God’s will I will be checking on this matter. I ask god to give us as people willing and hearts to help one another at this time. If we don’t help each other we have nothing here is the US. Understand that.

you say that this "does not have anything to do with Mississippi " but this modern day deep poverty IS happening in Mississippi....and it is unbelievable that the "state "and health department allow people to live in these conditions....

She looks so worn and torn. She's hanging on a rope so thin...May help come swiftly...if it hasn't already. I've never seen eyes like hers. Tiredness, sadness, overwhelmed. I wish I could help...but in the meantime I will pray for her and the others going through the struggle. Figure out if there some type of donation that could be given.

On limited income and no disability for my husband and me. Weather damage. It happens to many people. We make do and still need a volunteer or two. It's hard to hire handymen. I know you will be greatly helped.

@@jacquelinesmith8582 Morning, I found this article on KZbin after I had taken a vacation to Hattiesburg in June visiting my mother & father. Im planning a trip for Christmas. Mostly definitely im going to look her up. Its not a problem with me finding her because my cousin is a over the police department. I pray her situation is different now rather than watching this video. She doesn't deserve that after all the hard work she has done .

Missionaries ask for money from American charities and donation to help other countries and turn a blind eye on what happening in Mississippi, shame on politician to allow Americans born in Mississippi living worse than third world countries, I felt sorry for those people living conditions, no heat,no hot water ,no food, broken down homes,no jobs, what a life

to oakvalebob, I could not find your response to reply back to on this site, but answering your question "my state/govenor nor the health department would ever allow people to live in these conditions.the health department would condemn the houses, the state has mandated laws for public housing and housing . This is unreal that people are living like this , do u kno if things are better for them in 2013?

I am not understanding why this lady has to go around interviewing the people where are the leaders of this city? are they not aware that their people are living in these conditions? this is unreal in this day and age... doesn't the state of Mississippi have programs for the less fortunate to help? I am so not understanding this....

this has nothing to do with just Mississippi, poverty is a problem in every state although we are the poorest state in the union. The only programs available are food stamps and welfare and they do not address living conditions. Habitat for Humanity does but its not a government program.. Its not hard to understand some people either cant or wont do better for themselves and thus live like she does
