As a black woman who's lived here all my life I will say this fairly accurate. I do actually have an education and never had any kids. I have a degree in sociology and have worked in social services for over 10 years now. I started out in early education so I have a good grasp on the social problems that plague our state. It's sad because there's so much potential here. It really could be an awesome place to live.

I think it should also be mentioned that Gulfport and Biloxi saw extreme destruction from Hurricane Katrina's storm surge (worse than the kind of flooding in New Orleans) in 2005, which can be attributed to the decline, blight, poverty, and crime in those areas. The Gulf Coast overall never really recovered from that disaster.
@maryr130 Жыл бұрын
I grew up in Gulfport and lived through Camille. We really didn't recover much after. I think the reason for casinos was to generate much needed revenue I visit now and then but to be honest it's nothing like I used to know it to be. The crime is what makes me sad. It used to not be that way.

I have a love hate relationship with Mississippi. I loved the folks I worked with when I was at the Stennis Space Center. I loved driving through the country and stopping in the small towns. Cassidy's accent brought back memories. Cities like Bay St. Louis and Ocean Springs are beautiful. A lot of American culture, especially music, comes from Mississippi. However, there were some backward things that drove me nuts. I was not a fan of the politics. There was not a lot of opportunity for young folks. Most public schools are poor. There is a reason a lot of their best and brightest don't stick around after they graduate college. Agree with , it would have been nice to have interviewed folks of color as they make up more than a third of the population.
@AH-ih3wd2 жыл бұрын
"backwards" why? because you don't like the politics, you deem mississippians as backwards? tell the peons, oh great one, who made you the gatekeeper of what is backwards and what is forwards? and in many places of the state, the population of black mississippians far far exceeds "more than a third." why more black mississippians weren't interviewed ought to be a testament to the character of this fellow making this trash. you can't have mississippi without black people. there's a bit of right in this, "unboxing," but most of it is pompous, stereotypical bullshit. i'll grade this "unboxing" as a d minus, at best, on its accuracy and factuality.
@dangrimes50782 жыл бұрын
It works like this. Whatever color you are, how well you do is directly related to how much time you spend obsessing about your skin color. If you don't care about it no one else will either. On the other hand, if it's a big deal to you people will pick up on that instantly and it will tend to make them feel uncomfortable. What I just said might offend some but it is 100% true.

You missed some very important points about Mississippi. The second "religion" is collegiate football. Even Friday nights are high school football. I grew up in California but moved here 25 years ago. The people are very friendly and accepting. I love the slower pace of life. People don't eat out much. Everyone gets together for backyard BBQ instead. The public schools are bad but most families who can afford it send kids to private schools (church or prep school) and some home school. The first heart transplant in USA was done at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. We have many famous writers including Eudora Welty, James Faulkner and John Grisham. Mississippians lives are filled with church activities, family get-togethers and college football games. Brett Faurve and Peyton and Eli Manning are from Mississippi. Many men have "deer camp" during hunting season. A lot of people duck hunt with their trained Labrador Retrievers. Churches are segregated by choice. The worship style enjoyed by Black churches are very different than typical "unexciting" Baptist service. My church is mostly white but we have some Black families and Associate Pastor is Black. Get-togethers very important for all race families. Especially African-American. They can have 4 generations together with many children of all ages. Just before Memorial Day and 4th of July, grocery baskets full of fixins for good eats. Farmers with pickups full of sweet potatoes, boiled peanuts or watermelons sit along highways to sale their goods. Some of the best tasting melons straight from the farm. The poverty in Mississippi is generational. Lack of opportunities in small towns and bad public schools makes it hard to break poverty cycle. But that is no different from other poor states. But that is gradually changing. About 25% of students finishing medical school here are African-American. And many stay in the state to practice. White medical school graduates more likely to relocate to another state.

Born & Raised in MS. Lived in North MS & South. I like your video. I think the kid you talked to that was about to graduate college had the best perspective on our state. We basically have an older generation (70’s-80’s) of white men who do not want change, they have power, pull and money. When their generation starts dying off is when we may see some positive change for our state. We do have many contracts with large industrial corporations that are bringing lots of jobs to our state and recognition, but no one pays attention because we are just MS. I think everyone should be required to read “Dispatch’s From Pluto” it is a great perspective into the state. Honestly, if you have never lived here, you will never understand it.

Channels like this almost always pass over the positive points in any state not just Mississippi.. The only thing that was mentioned in terms of International culture is the US city for the International Ballet Competition, which is on the Olympic level, and is held in Jackson every 4 years. Jackson was host to 4 International exhibitions in the 90s and early 2000s, featuring priceless treasures from Saint Petersburg, Russia, Paris, France, Spain, as well as Dresden Germany. When the Spanish exhibition was held, the King and Queen from Spain flew in for the celebration. Each of these Internationally recognized exhibitions were held for over 6 months each, and bought in hundreds of 1000s of scholars and priceless artifact observers. Natchez, Mississippi was only mentioned briefly in this video.. Natches and Adams County have over 200 structures on the national historic register, including the antibellum homes, and historical Mississippi River taverns, dating from the 1700s. Some of the larger antidellum homes rival the White House. Natchez has been featured in movies over the years and operates a film commission. Natchez is the oldest city of any size on the Mississippi River having been established in 1715. At 1 time, Adams County and the city of Natchez had more wealth than Wall Street. Also the blues music was only briefly mentioned but has spread throughout the world, originating in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, drawing in musicians such as Eric Clapton to study the music. Our message is, come on in and discover it yourself. You are very welcome.

My family and I have lived in Northeast Ms, Tupelo in fact. We are progressing in many areas. My family is college educated,except for my 17 year old. He is considering MSU, just like his brother did. We get it done even though we are layed back. The kids love it out in the country, we can do basically anything we want to. It is very peaceful. Check it out. Carla Smith

Thanks Nick, I was born in Vicksburg and raised in Greenville.I’m Mississippi Delta born and raised and proud to be from there it’s a lot of love and pain coming out of that struggle. Mississippi has some of the most friendliest and welcoming people you’ll ever meet, very genuine people and at the same time some of the highest crime rates in the nation. The Delta is huge it’s starts in Memphis all the way down to Vicksburg/Yazoo City and parts of Arkansas and Louisiana. The Delta is full of history.

Born, raised, educated in Ms, from yazoo city now living in California. Love both states, yazoo city will always be home but California offers so many opportunities to become successful than ms. California have provided myself and my family a upper class income that I could only dream of in Ms, but I do plan to retire back there in a few years, still love my state for the slow life style and cost of living.

Isn’t Desoto county also part of Delta. I thought it was always part of the Delta but in recent years, it seems like everyone has been excluding it from being part of the Delta. Just curious @Delta Sipp

I was born in Tupelo Mississippi and even though I would like to explore the world before making a decision on where to live (I am only eighteen), I will always feel at home in Tupelo. I wouldn’t choose anywhere else in the state to live. I cannot speak for when this video was made, but as of right now there are plenty of jobs in Tupelo, not to mention the fact that we have the biggest hospital and the biggest high school in the state. Growing up near Tupelo I had the opportunity to preform in many full length ballets along with professional dancers from all over the world. I was also able to work closely with our amazing North Mississippi orchestra and the talented maestro Stephen Byess. So, I am no expert on the matter but to say that Mississippi is devoid of the arts is just not true. Just wanted share my perspective.

Greenwood ain’t bad because I’m from there, clarkdale ain’t much better, I been just about every town in Mississippi north and south because of work. Mississippi have the prettiest places to live in Mississippi. All I hear is hate😩a lot of people have different point of view. You can meet the nicest people in Mississippi willing to help you in need. If you have any questions asked me.

Living in AZ 22 yrs but from AL and family in MS and LA. This made me so homesick for the South. I love Gulfport. The people there are so kind and hospitable in those areas. The young lady in this video is well representative of how open and engagingly friendly Southern people are. Pretty much the polar opposite to AZ. Makes me want to move back as I have family still there.

Lol. I live here! This is hilarious but so true! Been here all my life! Although I grew up in an almost all white town, I still have a very open mind about life. I still want to go away from here. Just taking my time doing it. I love this video! And it is different in the South like you say but not exactly. Here in Tupelo where I am, all the crime is Ssshhhhhhhhhhhh! Black crime is exposed and white crime is too until you get outside of Tupelo. Drug possession/ Black, Drug Use/ White Gun Violence/ Both. But it's cool. No real divided line. I'm from outside of Tupelo where the people go mud riding for fun on the weekend. On Monday, you look at the cars to tell who had the most fun. If you blink, you'll miss Mantachie. Here, anywhere near a black community is considered " Bad" and if it's a white community it's considered "Good". Disregard! Crime is real all over whether you're in a black or white community. Glocks/Black, Assault rifles/White, Marijuana/Black, Meth and meth Labs/White, Prada/ White, Coach bags/Black, Catfish, slaw and fries/ White, Catfish, Spaghetti and cornbread/Black. Hey, I love it here. It is unique. Great video! Hollar at me if you need a more down to earth outlook though.

Nick, if you're ever passing through Mississippi I recommend 4 places and a book to read: Vicksburg (great Civil War park), Greenwood (nice old refurbished hotel I think funded by the Viking Range company which has a plant there), Oxford (nice downtown with a bustling restaurant on the square that was so cool - nice people at City Hall too) and Indianola (home of the BB King Museum - for me, being from Chicago, it was like Mecca). A really good book my one old college roommate bought for me which was a real eye-opener: "Rising Tide - The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America," by John Barry. Btw, I thought Jackson's train station and the part of downtown I saw was nice. Mississippi may need to improve in some areas but that goes for the other 49 states as well. Our country has got to start turning things around (and your videos are helping) but it's gotten embarrassing.

@@NickJohnson That would be awesome, Nick. Some day we should do a meet-up. My wife and I are all over the place as to where we want to move out of insanely-taxed New Jersey ... When you want to move out of a state so bad, it makes you open to anything. I'd rather live out West and her latest places she wants to check out are Morgantown, WV (hmm) and Corpus Christi, TX (kinda hot, humid, windy, 'birdy' & alligatorish ... hmmm). I may need to hire you as a consultant. I asked one of your other (British) commenters who the Nick Johnson of the UK is .....
