Now a nearly forgotten culture, Poverty Point at its peak 3,000 years ago was part of an enormous trading network that stretched for hundreds of miles across the continent. It was - and is - also an engineering marvel, the product of five million hours of labor. Explore the culture of a highly sophisticated people who left behind one of North America’s most important archeological sites. Poverty Point State Historic Site/Poverty Point National Monument is a prehistoric earthwork constructed by the Poverty Point culture, located in present-day northeastern Louisiana. Evidence of the Poverty Point culture extends throughout much of the Southeastern Woodlands of the Southern United States. The culture extended 100 miles across the Mississippi Delta and south to the Gulf Coast.
The Poverty Point site has been designated as a state historic site, U.S. National Monument, a U.S. National Historic Landmark, and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This is a great video about poverty point. Really. I just went there this week and I was really regretting not getting more video and pictures. This video has the whole place as well as tons of facts. Really good job putting it all together. And I’d like to say to anyone planning on visiting that springtime there is BEAUTIFUL! The whole place smells like flowers. I feel like I could hear a million birds and dragon flies were everywhere. I’ve heard summer there is miserable. You can see the ridges better in this video than in the time of year I was there but everything definitely doesn’t look as beautiful.

In Louisiana and Mississippi the oral history (told by locals) was that it was a city of 50,000 when the walls of Troy were falling. Not saying anything beyond that- the old folks often keep a local history tradition that differs from what the arriving experts tell the local folks ❤

If they say there were only a few thousand people there then there’s no way they could move 15.5 million basket loads of dirt in 90 days. That doesn’t math

How do we know these people that established Poverty Point are from the Bering Straits and not from North America and/or the Caribbean Tribes? It was said that there are no known records, so it makes more sense that they came from the Gulf or Atlantic Oceans. If they made mounds and other great works, this means they were very intelligent and intelligent enough to navigate oceans. Let's change the narrative so it makes better sense.
