Shout out to Elvis Ammo and FortuneCookie45. I just cast my first bullets and powder coated them with HF Red. Put in my rock tumbler for 20 minutes, I put them in the toaster oven at 275 for 15 minutes. Dumped the bullets into a box and shook them all apart in 5 seconds. They look fantastic. Thank you both for sharing your knowledge to make my first time so easily successful. 400 bullets cast with Lee's TL356 124TC. Perfect!

Wow I guess so too. That was a lot of work just to cast that many bullets. Looks like the low heat method works just fine. A suggestion for another video A good discussion on what you do when you have failures ie: the powder coat doesn’t have the proper coat when you open the plastic container. The powder being to thin or to thick. Thank you for your hard work and sharing it with us. You are the Big Daddy of powder coat bullets!

@gunsmithfiamma47886 жыл бұрын
You just didn't ask the right people :-). Here In Italy we can use our guns, only in shooting ranges. Basically we have 2 kind of shooting ranges: The official ones, were fast shooting is not allowed and you can only shoot to normal paper targets and the private ones (aka Shooting Clubs), where you can train in IPSC and IDPA disciplines. We can buy only a limited amount of handguns and black rifles, but we can have as much hunting rifles and shotguns as we want. We can store only a very limited amount of ammo in our houses. People who come from outside Italy, "normally" can't shoot or even touch a gun, but if you know the right people, they will let you enjoy a couple of magazines in a private shooting range and then you will see how Italy is more free of some USA state :-). Sadly we also have what you call "Liberals", so talking about guns is not very common in public. If you want more info about it, just ask and I will be more than happy to answer your questions.

Eastwood ford light blue and dark blue 273-276 depends on where the probe is Yes I shake off the excess powder like you and I keep the oven on the warm setting I am like I don't have time to stand them up right like loads of bacon but when I do they come out flawless but I use your recipe now I do keep my oven on warm but there is other setting like broil bake and toast that I don't use not that this should matter but I also live in Florida and we do have high humidity just to throw that out there

Damn, Elvis! You need 2 men and a boy to tumble that herd of boolits. My experience is that any reasonable amount of boolits works fine if it fits your equipment, at least so far.. Never even tried the standing them up method. Did try parchment paper, non stick aluminum foil and silicone mat. none of that worked to my satisfaction for various reasons. Appreciate your posts as you never led me astray on powder coating. Even use the same style hardware cloth basket like you do. I still cook em at 400 F for 20 minutes and water quench. buddy. I always figured bigger piles would mean more boogers and ugliness from clumped paint but it just doesn't happen. Keep em coming,

I appreciate all the information that you publish on KZbin on reloading. It is very helpful.I have a questional about powder coating and reloading. In lube coated lead bullets, the BHN is important in order not to experience a leading problem with the bullet. To soft a BHN leading in the barrel is produced, to hard a BHN and leading is produced by the bullet not obdurating and hot gases blow past the bullet. I also assume in using a bullet that does not obdurate that there is a sacrifice in velocity because of this hot gas blowing past the bullet.Do you still have to have a proper BHN when you powder coat so the the bullet obdurates?When the bullet is annealed by the powder coating process, is the BHN static and not change or does the BHN continue to increase over time?

@bobmcclure80696 жыл бұрын
Elvis, your hypothesis on steel vs lead and heating is correct, but the reason you think it does this is a little bit off. You are correct about steel taking longer to heat up and cool down. This is because of the specific heat capacity of the metals. This is why it takes longer to heat the steel up. It takes about 4 times the heat energy to heat the same mass of steel up as it does to heat the same mass of lead.
@elvisammo6 жыл бұрын
thanks for the input!! the cure or bake time for a specific powder coat is usually set with steel in mind.. I got a feeling we are over heating and baking for a little too long in general. but as with any specific metal and item size/weight to be coated a little experimenting can dial it in more closely to perfection... thanks for watching and commenting

What brand powder coat you use. I tried it with the black that ti have and it does not coat the bullets by shaking them. Works great with electrostatic gun but shaking no lick.
@nickjm37fordel16 жыл бұрын
Hey Elvis this is a great discovery ! I always tried to cool mine off quickly by dumping them in a bucket of water. It looks like the trick is to let them cool on there own. I will definitely try a lower temp (275) and a shorter time, the 15:00 to 20:00 min. period. Question, do you think it matters what powder you use : Eastwood or Harbor Freight ? Also, do you think it matters if you use the basket or the Teflon pad ? PS: I think I saw a small Elvis shake in there :-)

Ok so I made sure the temp was right like you suggested and it was then I let it cool naturally I usually use a fan to speed the process up and still not like yours but when I do it like loads of bacon they come out great with your temps but that process is long and tedious as you well know the only thing I can think of if the way you cook them what I mean is do you put it on warm bake broil mine stays on warm but if I can't figure it out then I will have to use your temps and load of bacons method and believe me I don't want that. Thanks for letting me twisted your ear for a bit

@cogunlover55506 жыл бұрын
Wow that is awesome to see you can do that many at one time. I have issues with my powder coated lead cast bullets sticking to the great. I'm using what looks to be the same one as you however mine tend to have a bunch of Deep indents from the Trey. Also when I break mine apart it is really difficult sometimes to get them apart. What do you think my issue is? What temperature are you running these at in your oven and for how long? Also I heard you say you were mixing white with the Ford light blue. Does that help them break up easier? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated
@2Supra4U6 жыл бұрын
Probably one of these or both. 1. you are baking too long probably. 2. you are not getting rid of all the excess. I used to worry about the coverage. just screen them real good. be rough. its ok if you see tiny spots of silver everywhere. it will spread and fill.
@peteraugust52956 жыл бұрын
Beautiful. Do you have experience with different bullet types for coating? Im thinking about starting to powdercoat 9mm bullets and Im not sure about which mould I should get. I Was thinking about the Lee .166 Round nose 125gn Mould, but most the videos I watch use bullets with some kind of lube grooves, I wonder why that is?

it looks like he uses the lee tumble lube mold,,124gr.
@joekickass32636 жыл бұрын
That's some great results, Elvis. The question is.... can you produce the same results by using only ONE type/brand/color of powder? I have a feeling your good results are because you mixed all those different powders together. And without anyone knowing those mixing ratios, it may be difficult, if not impossible to duplicate those same good results. Also, are you using a convection oven setting or just a bake/toast setting on the oven? I have had better results with a convection oven.
@elvisammo6 жыл бұрын
cheap ole dial type oven... I started the experimenting with Your FLB then I added a third of Harbor Freight White.. for the specks.. and it does seem like a fine coat with the mix.. I have been doing this for while. The coat seems a little more durable and less sticky. But I have accomplished the same thing with the Ford Light Blue on it's own. the 275 degrees seems to melt on to the bullets and without further melting to eachother? try it out and let me know your results...
