Hey Elvis!!! I knew you'd laugh at me brother for using my powder gun and standing them up. Lol. I know its a pain but I love how perty they come out. Even the hf black is awesome. But you get a whole lot more done at one time than I do. I look foward to the next video my friend. Btw... isn't that smell addictive when they're cooking.

I will have to disagree with you about not worrying about the base. It is the part of the bullet that receives the majority of the heat from powder igniting. That is why gas checks exist to protect the bullet from heating up and causing fowling issues in the barrel.

Hey Man! The Reloader Dude... Yeah if you wanted perfect bullets out of a big batch you would find well over half around the perfect mark... I watched a video where the guy placed the bullets in the plastic Factory ammo egg cartons after he inspected them. Then he used that to get them on his oven tray. He was doing wax lube grooves. I am just thinking that the plastic egg crates might work in your powder coating container if you shift back and forth and swirl to coat. Or do Full Wad Cutters and scoop them with the cartridge egg crate. Someday a reloader will invent a time machine so they can have 24 more hours each day to solve the mysteries of reloading...
@TheReloaderDude7 жыл бұрын
LIVIN CINCY that would work. But the results I get while not perfect I believe are good enough for the effort. I blow through so much ammo shooting matches that I don't have time to dedicate to make almost perfect practice rounds. Keep up the good comments. I may not responded to them all but they are read and appreciated.

It doesn't matter how pretty the bullets are as mine are splattered all over a steel gong anyway . You should call this the Elvis Ammo KISS Method .

Hey Elvis, I believe that if someone wants high production and low cost to equipment powder coating is the way to go, as you know, I don't powder coat. However, I also have a production machine that does it all with one stroke of a handle. You guys do the same operation in sizing your powder coated as I do with my star lube sizer. But your method and cost Blow's my machine out of the water as a cost Vs. production. Dave.

I've been loading my own since 1965 and up until about 10 years ago I've poured my own lead handgun bullets and sized and lubed them with my Lyman lube sizer. I have no idea how many thousands of bullets I have poured and sized during that time. About 10 years ago I quit pouring my own and began buying commercially made bullets from X-treme Bullets in Carson, Nevada or Misouri Bullets in Missouri. I don't get any brownie points for saying this, but Missouri by far has the best quality, prices and customer service that I have come across. Having said all of that, can you convince me of any solid proof that powder coating your bullets is any measurable advantage in regards to performance, reliability, or barrel leading prevention. I like your videos and appreciate your honest opinions. Thanks for your very informational videos. Others on the internet I have little interest including one that you have mentiond a few times. Thanks for all your time and experience that you put into your videos..
@elvisammo6 жыл бұрын
Hey nevadajim.... lubed bullets work great and have for over a hundred years cant say much bad about that...But Powder coated bullets are more forgiving when it comes to bullet hardness, Cleaner on your hands and equipment, and cheaper to coat. 1 pound of powder (5 to 12 bucks) can coat well over 10,000 bullets. I havent really counted a guess probably more; I fired over 200 rounds of 9mm yesterday and was showing my brother the barrel, Then run a tight dry patch through it and was shining like new.. : ) No worries of smoke obstructing your view.. : ) From time to time I will shoot lubed just because I like to rehash the past.... : )

Elvis, I don't like the tiny little spots and boogers. For 9 MM it may be OK. But for my tiny little 22 lr 40 grain pills it is too much. So I stand them up on a silicone mat. When I start doing 9 MM I will do it exactly the way you do it. And, just fyi and your watchers...when I first started, I was not getting thick coverage. It was even but very thin (Harbor Freight Red). So I did two coats of the thin layers. For some reason they started getting real thick...to the point that I have to shake them a little more before I put them in the oven. I don't like the thick coats. Two thin coats and then I re-strike them in the swaging die. I use a smaller die for before powder coat and a larger die for the final coat so it does not scrape the pc off. Also, I see that the guys on castboolits forum are discussing your videos now. You are becoming a legend my friend. HEY KZbin, ELVIS AMMO HERE....ALSO, envy you being able to shoot so much. That one batch would last me a couple of years.

@elvisammo7 жыл бұрын
Hey J H.. One fact we do know is lots of factory ammo is bare on the base. The next fact we have is the rifling comes in contact with the sides along the shank of the bullet. Lubed bullets are only protected along the lube grooves. I may dig into this!

Hey Elvis Ammo, Im a newbie to casting my own bullets and am still climbing the learning curve. I can't seem to get to a leveling off place yet and I have no one in my area that casts. I have a great resource for wheel weights and have made a lot of ingots, but still can't get decent bullets. I don't powder coat but I think parchment paper on a metal pan would work better than that wire mesh. You can stand each bullet on it's base and with the metal pan you should be able to move them in and out of the oven with no problem. Parchment paper is $3.48 for 45 sq ft roll on Wal Mart .com. Just a thought. I have enjoyed all you videos, keep up the great work.

Hey Elvis, you said they were 124gn bullets. Are you using a 124gn mold and getting 124gn bullets? I'm using a Lee 115gn 6 cavity mold and getting 122gn +/- bullets and having to adjust my load. Just curious about your weights.
@elvisammo7 жыл бұрын
Hey Thomas Bogart .... No worries. Each batch of alloy may be a little different in weight. And on top of that the mold may or may not be perfectly calibrated in weight. Off the top of my head. My 124gr. mold is droping around 127gr. bullets. depending on the batch of lead at the time. It's fairly common to be off a bit .. Just load accordingly! Thanks for the question! Hope this helps

Hey Elvis, good info. I find that I do smaller batches cuz I'm still using some old two cavity molds and by the time I get 100-150 done, I need a break. With that being said , I tried Loads of Bacon,s technique and for small batches it work well. Put on some nitrile gloves, drop the newly coated bullets into a plastic factory bullet holder, fill it up, put oven tray on top and flip it. All nice and stood up on the base and pretty quick. Messed around with using double light coats with different colors, sizing in between coats. With that method, the double coat fills in any light spots. Not necessary, but in small batches it gives a really good finish and always a surprise on color results. That method works well for "designer" bullets. I agree that the single coat bulk method is a winner when you don't have the time for the playing around designer stuff. A side note to Thorsaxe777, once you start powder coating it's really hard to go back to normal bullet lube. Way less lead fouling and no diminished accuracy that I've noticed.

Those beautiful bullets look fine to me. I am all for doing bulk powder coating batches with smaller pistol bullets and rifle bullets, although I have never done a batch as big as that 420 you just did here - I do not think I could fit that many bullets in my little toaster oven. I just might have to keep my eyes open for a bigger toaster oven at yard sales now. I only take the time to stand up bigger shotgun slugs that I have to knock the powder out of the hollow bases before I cook them, otherwise I think I would do all my bullet coating in bulk. With my powder coating, it looks to me like the parts of the bullets that are well powder coated are the parts that have the largest diameter and are what engages with the rifling. It seems like the small imperfections where some bullets are missing powder coating from where they touched the screen or another bullet are smaller in diameter and don't even engage the rifling - or that is what it looks like from the bullets I have shot then have been able to recover. I do not think those small imperfections in powder coating cause any barrel leading as I am not getting any lead deposited in the barrel after 50 to 100 shots before cleaning - this is in a polygonal rifled pistol barrel. Just my personal experience.

Howdy Elvis, Great video, very informative! I just PC my first batch of 150 bullets 9 mm that I casted the day before. with Eastwood Lime green and signal. I used your 4/140 method for the two of 3 batches. The third batch in Signal Red with the regular method, PC, shake and bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes. Batch 1, turned out ok, a little learning curve as to how powder to use and shake off. Batch 2 & 3 look Awesome! Thanks for your amazing videos! I must admit there is not much difference. The only time I ever got any leading with a powder coated bullet was when I purchased a Marlin 44 Mag lever gun and I learned to slug the barrel, it was .003 larger than spec. Good video, Elvis Ammo...!! This is what our friend GunFun ZS does also, except the has the bullets in a big basket 4 or 5 deep in a bigger oven so he even does 'em in bigger bulk. You and I are limited a bit by oven size. A good quality powder like FLB helps a lot...but I really do appreciate how nice real big bullets like the 500 grain and 405 grain 45/70 and 458 Win Mag bullets come out when they are stood on end...works out well because we don't shoot those monsters at a high rate of fire...But our pistol bullets sure come out fine this way - my oldest basket is all wore out...but my newer baskets are going to take over - I've got four of 'em made. The Elvis 4 140 system looks like the way to go for the Harbor Freight powders. Good powder coatin' to ya...FC.

If you're gonna do a bulk load, you're gonna need more than one oven. I have 3 ovens, but usually run 2 at a time. I coated 60 lb's of 9mm the other day (roughly 2700+) in 3-4 hours with 2 ovens. That's with tumble coat method...and standing some up. Although I mainly tumble coat, I have a couple different methods. I have the sprayer for the powders I have that will not tumble coat. I also have jigs set up for Hollow Points that can be sprayed upside down so the HP cavity doesn't fill up. Also, the wife likes the sprayed method on her Neon Pink bullets, as she doesn't like flaws and spots on her bullets. And we all know...happy wife happy life. One powder that also works well with the tumble method is the Kawasaki Green from Columbia Coatings. It's my son's preferred "Zombie green" coating.

I just powder coated my first bullets using your 420 method a couple weeks ago. I used HF red so I did the preheat. I only did 25 bullets as a test and since they were already lubed (all I had) I cleaned the lube off by boiling them in hot water and used some brake cleaner on them. They turned out great, the PC stuck on with no issues. I'm actually doing them for my dad who I load for but he hates cleaning out lead. He wanted me to start loading copper bullets for his plinking which would be way too expensive. Loaded them up and test fired them in his Ruger and no leading. We were both happy. I may even start powder coating my Cowboy Action bullets, but I don't get as much leading as he did so I may stick to lube. Time will tell.

Elvis Ammo -- Yeah I think it all depends on the powder coat. Hey Elvis its just like you said --- you get the some of the best results with the Eastwood FLB. I have been using a lot of Prismatic colors in my Powder Coating fest and can tell you I can't use the bulk method without considering what powder I am using. I tried and some powder coats just won't hunt... or is that dogs lol. If I use Silver Artery I can PC in Bulk.. if I use Chrome PC I have to cut the amount of bullets down by half that of a Silver Artery Coat. If I use Roman gold I have to coat twice and use two thirds the amount of bullets per batch. But I do just what you just said... I use the Elvis method first.. with heat to 140 then shake and bake. I like your method because it is very economical and a pound of powder for my base coats goes a very long way. Then to make them fancy I stand them up and shoot them with a candy coat that does an over the top awesome job. Its nice to be able to stand your bullets up without having to make a jig with a drill press.. but most handgun bullets and 45-70s rifles are a snap to shoot with a powder gun. I first started out with skinny rifle bullets and used a drill press to to make jigs that would stand them up .. I have to say it is still pretty fast. It takes less than three min to stand them up shoot them and put them in the oven. I like my twice PC method because the it saves powder and looks great.

Vengenace Early ...hey man! yeah just like you say.. there are reasons why someone would take xtra time with bullets that we don't shoot in bulk. . And in part we like to satisfy our selves with the desired results. . That sounds like a real nice system you got there for sure! and some cool colors to boot! Happy shooting my OCD friend! ; )

Most of this for me started out by trying to make a powder coated rifle bullet work as well as a copper jacketed rifle bullet. Or I wouldn't have bothered trying to get them so smooth. My goal has always been to get the FPS up to a copper jacketed rifle bullet and still be accurate. Since the time and labor is the same no matter what choice of color I use I like to have some fun. It just took me some time and powder coating to find out how to do it with as little powder and time as possible. :) Life is too short for just coating them in Harbor Freight Red ... LOL

Thanks for this video elvis. I tried the eastwood zombie green with mixed results. I'm gonna try the Ford blue next to see if the powders results vary.

I started this way back in march after watching one of your video. They key is the eastwoods ford light blue paint. Also put a cookie pan under your basket makes it easy to recyle powder. Gloss white from Eastwood is a great powder also.
@elvisammo7 жыл бұрын
hey garym 1a2... interesting.. the gloss white. Is it a shake and bake like the ford light blue?
@garym1a27 жыл бұрын
It shakes on much faster than ford blue. A problem with the white is you have to be carefull not too many bullets or you have to smack the bullets to drop from the pan and to seperate them. I put bbq no stick sheet on the basket to stop the basket stick. Still they stick good to each other. So shack off the excess. The white also look very pretty with a little ford blue mixed in.

Are certain colors possibly more damaging to bores? Thank you!
@elvisammo7 жыл бұрын
Hey Captainpegs07.. I personally don't think so . You might be referring to the Harbor Freight Black, Has mica in it. Some have said this and thinks it is too abrasive. Hope this helps.....!

Good video Question for Elvis Ammo: have you shot any of these that you've coated in bulk, and was the performance the same, or at least similar, to bullets that you've stood up on your mesh?
@elvisammo6 жыл бұрын
jamesp81 ..Yes I shoot thousands just like that with the same or even better than factory results. . I'm not exaggerating. .. I'm not the best shot but I regularly hit 8 inch steel at 50 and even a hundred yards
@jamesp81646 жыл бұрын
Great results then. I've been tumble lubing and I do like that I don't need additional tools for it (I already have to haul my whole casting set up outside from my basement, and it's quite enough even with just a Lee magnum melter and a couple of molds, and associated tooling), but this looks to have so many advantages I'll suffer adding another appliance just to give it a try.

elvis ammo I made tons of red, white, and blue for the fourth this year. I just got to casting my own recently. Your vids and FC45 and Johny and Thorsax really did right by me. I was up and running in no time. Thank you for putting the time into them.

So, have you given up on pre-heating before powder coating?
@elvisammo7 жыл бұрын
Hey there Ozark spirit...The preheat is only for the harbor freight Powder Coat. 4 min. at 140 F. The Eastwood Ford Light blue is Just Shake and Bake! Done. : )
@OzarkSpirit7 жыл бұрын
Hey Elvis Ammo, try the Tiger Drylac powder on Amazon from the Powdercoat Store. I have the vermillion red and the candy blue. The candy colors are wicked looking. And, it is only a few dollars more than the Harbor Freight powders. I think I paid $22 for the candy and $18 for the red. The powder has performed great and bakes on in only ten minutes. The candy goes on nice and thin. No need to preheat and oven time is cut in half.

So does running the bullets thru the sizer rub the coating off the driving bands, or does it size the coating to the diameter of the die ? Could you size 'em first and THEN powder-coat to increase the size a mite ? My sizing die is still about .001" smaller than the throats in my revolver.
@elvisammo7 жыл бұрын
Hey lebomm johnson.. good question.. thats one of the benefits of powder coating . Yes you can take advantage of increasing the diameter that way for sure!
@elvisammo7 жыл бұрын
Oh and no it does not rub the coating off in the sizer! good to go
