I blame you Elvis for getting me into powder coating bullets. I did modify my process a little. For what ever reason I get the best results when I dont let the bullets cool. I dump the bullets from my basket while they are still hot on a cookie sheet and roll them around with a gloved hand so they dont stick together. no bugers this way. Hope this may your viewers that are having problems. As alway,s great vidio.

Morning Elvis, I was glad to see your response to my comments this morning and had to laugh about the go fund me idea. The red that I used was the Eastwood ruby red. I used your 40/140 method. I dropped them from the screen sooner than I did the blue , still hot to the touch, and had excellent results.
@chrossphyre7 жыл бұрын
So this is what I tried the other day with red powder from Habour Freight and Blue powder from Princess Auto. I tumbled them for 20 minutes in a vibratory tumbler with the colour. Cleaning between colours was simple and easy. The cast bullet is a Lee 124 grain tumble lube type with a truncated cone nose. I dumped the bullets out into a bowl shaped fine-mesh colander I purchased from the Dollar store. A quick shake around to remove the excess powder onto cardboard. Then I put on a nitrile glove and picked out each bullet and stood them on end on Betty Crocker silicone parchment paper (also Dollar Store) placed on a toaster oven tray. The tray went into a toaster oven and stayed there only long enough for the temperature to hit 400 degrees F twice, then the tray was dumped into a bucket of water. I did not reuse the piece of parchment paper but there was no sticking at all. Coverage was exceptional and pretty thin compared to what I'm seeing in your video Elvis. Even the bases are covered well. I'm waiting for a sizer to show up before I go out and test them but results look very encouraging so far.

Hi Elvis, I love your videos. I started casting just a few months ago after watching Fortune cookie 45lc. Then I discovered your videos and his about powder coating. I now have Lee molds for 45 colt, 44 mag, 30/06, and 357. I bought an Eastwood oven and received it last week along with the ford light blue and a red color powder. Then I bought harbor freight yellow. I used your 4/140 method on the red and yellow. I shook and cooked the blue. I am very happy with the results on them all! The bad new is, I figure you and Fortune Cookie owe me a couple hundred bucks for the molds, oven, etc.

Looks great Elvis! I get my best results from covering my baking sheet with non stick aluminum foil and then (painstakingly) standing them each up on end with tweezers. It's a bit time consuming but for me at least yields the best finish / coating. I coat them exactly the same way you do. Also this techniques is pretty east with pistol bullets but when it comes to long skinny rifle bullets I tweeze them right onto the baking sheet IN the oven, its almost impossible to stand them up and then walk them to the oven without half of them falling over :-(

I may not be a powder coat guy, However I understand it completely. I basically do the same thing with my High Velocity Bullets by coating them with Rooster Jacket.. I got started on using that product while match shooting, I had a .444 Marlin 336 lever action I was firing cast bullets in and they leaded the Barrel somewhat, Nothing that a Chore Boy patch wouldn't take care of..That Micro groove rifling grabs a bullet like you wouldn't believe. Once I started using rooster Jacket,,, No more leading, It Bonds to the Barring surface and makes the bullet slicker going down the Barrel. I wish the weather would clear up so I could get some range time... anyway Good to hear from ya Elvis.. Dave.

Thanks for the mention, and the kind words! Looks like the parchment paper is a viable option. The results remind me of the silicone baking mat; the difference is, you never have to clean the paper, and you get far more uses out of the silicone. Either way appears to be a cheap and effective option. Then again, so is the wire mesh for some. I guess all these things are just theory until we try them for ourselves. There's no real risk in the experimenting; anything that doesn't work out can go right back in the melting pot to be cast again. Keep innovating, and keep these great videos coming Mr. Elvis!

I used parchment paper for awhile. you usually get about 4-5 oven cycles before it may start to fall apart, when I take mine out of the oven I usually shake it or jounce it to break the bullets off the parchment paper, once theyre moving I swirl them on the sheet while hold two corners of the parchment paper to keep it from tearing as easily, ive had good luck with it. I'm trying baskets right now, its not so easy to find a basket that holds 223 bullets.
@elvisammo7 жыл бұрын
Hey Brody556... something to be said for the parchment paper..... I use my basket without a problem for the 223. I shake the powder off then set it on the oven tray and pull out 5 or 6 bullets that did a nose dive through the wire and light em up! : )

Very informative. My take with watching this and my own experience is there is no perfect answer to achieving unblemished powder coated rifle bullets. I use a low voltage powder gun. I cover a wood plank that has been drilled for the size bullets and cover with non stick aluminum foil. I set the bullets in the holes and shoot them. Then bake them. They would turn out perfect except there is flashing around the near base of the bullets where they set in the holes. The bottom of the base itself is powder coated . So they are not perfect. But does it matter ? Only shooting them will tell. Not to mention the right powder/bullet grain combo testing. PS this only applies to rifle powder coating in my opinion. Your shake and bake method is the way to go for me if I were powder coating handgun bullets. Nice talkin to ya . I haven't for got to send out your package. But we have a new dobe puppy "trudi 10 weeks old " to work with right now.

Running my first batches of powder coated bullets this past weekend. All things being equal to what you do Elvis. I used the wire mesh tray, my results were not that good. My first batch was ford light blue, went 350 for 20 minutes and when I pulled my 230 grain missiles apart it pulled the coat off with it. Second batch was Eastwood red at 400 degrees for 20 min and I dropped my count back a little. Got the same results just a little better but not much. 3rd batch was Eastwood white and those were blotchy. My prep was no different so I don't get it. Perhaps I will try the paper.

thank for doing that video. it's like a birthday gift to me. makes me feel like I helped a bit. I haven't tryed rifle bullets yet. I will be doing so soon. you should try putting them in water when they come out of the oven. I only have a few that stick together. do you think that water could hurt the process? I'm going to try a comparison with the smash test. As usual keep up the good work on keeping us up to date with the whole reloading process.
@kirkboswell25757 жыл бұрын
Grant Atkinson - I saw a video of a guy in Europe who was using water also. He said the same thing, that he didn't have much sticking together. At the time Elvis hadn't seen much difference between using water or not. But it could be worth exploring further, since you have also had some success. In my mind, an ideal surface would be a silicone coated wire mesh. But I wouldn't have any idea of where to find such a contraption for testing.
@kirkboswell25757 жыл бұрын
Grant Atkinson - I'm glad to. I'm getting back into casting after a long hiatus, and "progress continues" keeps coming to mind. I'm comparing what I knew "back then" with what Elvis is doing now. I am learning some new stuff. It also feels good to chime in once in a while with information that has fallen by the wayside. FortuneCookieLC45 has a good channel too. He, too, remembers most of what I do, but he has not had any hiatus like I have.
@grantatkinson55317 жыл бұрын
Kirk Boswell dosent it feel good shooting your own bullets. I can't even guess how much I have spent on bullets. Molding my own bullets and powder coating them makes perfect sense. have you ever been stopped by someone at the range about your powder coated bullets? it is fun talking to people about them. I'm glad Elvis Ammo is on KZbin. I have learned so much. I have checked out FC45LC and a few others. I watch Elvis Ammo the most. good information.
@kirkboswell25757 жыл бұрын
Grant Atkinson - Yes, it does feel good!!! And while I was hesitant about powder coating at first, it seems to be the answer for a number of issues. No need to cast really hard bullets, or to use gas checks, or a high performance lube, etc. And, cast bullets have typically been limited to 2400 fps or less, no matter what you did, unless you wanted leaded barrels. PC bullets seem to be performing close to what jacketed bullets do, and speeds of 3300 fps are being reported by several shooters, and no issues with leading. I'm quite sure, personally, that factory speeds and performance are going to be achieved with continued experience with PC bullets. Just an FYI for you. My hiatus was due to a ring on my finger, an a desire for peace after work. That particular anchor is no longer an issue.

hey ocean374. .. the TC. has a moe specific crimping area like some of our 38 and 357 for instance. when looking for info in our data. .I would suggest using hp. data since the bullet resembles the hp, as it's missing the tip. my lyman data gives a min oal. of 1.075 that is more in line with where the bullet should seat.
