Pontiac guys love to worship the RA IV 041 cam. And I don't understand why. You can do so much better. Someone once told me it's the sound. I am not convinced, but ok. A round port headed Pontiac 400 with OEM heads should have a lobe separation angle of 108-109 degrees to run best. A 455 with the same heads needs 106 LSA. Both are with the stock 1.65 rockers that came on those versions. A hydraulic roller that mimics the sound of the 041 would look something like 280/2992 @ .006, with 226/235 @ .050, on a 112 degree lobe separation angle. I have spent a lot of time playing with Pontiac cams.

I agree I can do better no problem, but.... if people want to buy a product that I am capable of manufacturing I'm gonna relieve them of some Money...

Couldn't agree more, people are soo hung up on nostalgia at the cost of quite a bit of power and drivability left on the table. Put a modern grind in, It'll make more power AND sound good !

Ur cam profile is a bit larger than the original, you shud know a roller (hyd or solid) usually needs 10° less duration, b'cuz of the ramps, to get same results, one of ur other comments, i agree with, it was about 7° less on both, that wud achieve the goal, if the customer wants the same duration specs in a roller, thinkin its gonna be the same, is uninformed, and we cant fix that......i'm a Pontiac guy, have built many motors, the LSA, is exactly what the other comment said, but these customers still want power brakes........the motor will be happiest with a 108-110 LSA......i know stock 041 is at 113/114, they wanted power brakes......i like the vid, and the info, just maybe consult a Poncho guy like me, or ur other commenter, to appease the uninformed, and give them a usefull cam, that will sound awsome, and still retain their ammenities......i dont have any, i run manual brakes, i stop on a dime, as my overlap nets 3 to 4" of vacume.....jeez i hope some of my rant made sense, i like what ur doin, but generaly agree with the other dude.....all good, and i'm a HAPPY sub'r!!!...TY sir!!!!

Agreed, Im in australia and have a 455 in a gto, I used the performance years forums to gather info as pontiacs are pretty rare here. The lads on the forum were pretty hardcore on factory spec was the only way, the cylinder head chat was particularly interesting to read. Some interesting verbal tirades over alloy head brands!

Sounds like the guys who still say the best cam for a good running street driven SBC is the “151 cam” and that “202 double hump” iron heads are the be-all end-all in SBC cylinder heads. Vintage stuff is cool but if the factory had gotten it right all those years ago there wouldn’t be 400 Pontiac’s or 350 SBC’s out there that are just as street-able as those old factory setups but are reliably making 50, 60, 70+ percent more power than the factory setups were rated for in SAE Gross power.
