Would it be possible to do something similar with a 12V flood light and motion sensor?

Yes, in that case the lights would be powered directly from the 12v battery and activated by the motion sensor (not activated by the gate movement). So it would turn on when you drove through but it would also turn on when other people drove past your gate (depending on position). It could also be activated by wildlife or wind. Depending on battery capacity and the power of the light, this could drain the battery faster than the solar could charge it.

GIVE AN UPDATE ON THAT GATE OPENER AFTER 4 YEARS. What problems, what parts have you replaced, how dependable, etc.

Hey JL. Thanks for the comment. I probably won't do an update on the gate opener or light setup but I will tell you that it has been extremely trouble free. The light setup still works perfectly without any changes, modifications, or repairs needed. The gate opener still works flawlessly. I think I'm on my second garden tractor size battery but that's to be expected. It's still only solar powered. My family has 4 Mighty Mule gate openers and they have been good for us. Let me know if you have any questions about it.

will this set up work with the wired transformer? I would also like to put a light sensor on (so lights don't go on in daytime) if you have any input on that too. Thanks for a great video. Hopefully I will hear back from you. My transformer charges the 2 batteries in the control box.

Hi John! Sorry for the delay. Yes this setup should work regardless of how your gate is powered. I planned on putting a light sensor on mine also but I never got around to it. Sorry about that.

Robert Fans: I’ve got my light sensor working with the gate lights, so they only turn on at night.. If you’ll tell me your gate type I’ll look and see if I can modify my setup to work with your gate opener… At a high level just put the light sensor between the board and the power that goes to the light, should work..
