Power Girl is a strong character that has become so much more than Supergirl from Earth-2, but she's mostly known for her boob window. Why?

Years ago, there was an issues of Superman/ Batman where they were dealing with a teenager Toy Master. Powergirl was a side character, the artist drew Kara's apartment and clothes closet, there were around a dozen different type of Powergirl out fits in it, also she wore four different outfits in the issue which covered a week of story telling. So she changes her clothes as often as she changes her mind, it is what women do.

I actually find Power-Girl to be one of the few super-heroines with an openly sexual costume that feels appropriate for the character. She openly embraces her sexuality and it plays into her character without it being degrading. It doesn’t make sense for a character like the Invisible Woman or Big Barda to have inherently sexual costumes, because that’s not fitting to who they are portrayed as on the pages. But Power-Girl is staunchly feminist in nature, and it’s empowering for her.

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I'VE BEEN THINKING. It makes sense for characters like Power Girl or Starfire to dress in a sexy way, hell, Starfire's whole character is getting used to the discriminatory Earth custom towards sex and sexuality, because in her planet there's no taboo in all of that. But with characters like Huntress or Invisible Woman? Sue is supposed to be a serious scientist and a mother, it doesn't make sense for her to dress in a skimpy way and even more considering her male teammates don't do the same thing, and Huntress is a devout Catholic in a killing spree to avenge her family, I don't see the point of her dressing in a bikini when that doesn't fit her character on the slightest.

"feminist doesn't mean covering up..." Reminds me of a video that I saw about the first feminist movement which was about how woman wanted to appear either naked or provocative since men were often portrayed like this in paintings
2 жыл бұрын
Just take societies where women have the least freedom for example. There they tend to be covered literally from head to toe.
@blahorgaslisk7763
@blahorgaslisk7763 2 жыл бұрын
The word "feminism" is all about empowerment. It was coined in an age when women were not allowed to vote or in some societies even own property. Heck they were often property, first of their father, then of their brothers and if they died they became the property of their closes surviving male relative. That is until they married at which point they became the property of their husband, and so on. Feminist became a title of pride for the women who dared to openly go against the customs, customs that often were codified into laws, and yes there wee women that got thrown in jail for openly talking about feminism. I think it's important to remember the origins whenever we hear about the modern interpretations of what feminism is. At first it was about things like being allowed to own a business, allowed to work, being able to have a life without being effectively owned by a man. As these goals were reached the feminist movement started looking at other areas where women were discriminated. Today it's mostly about equality before the law and the old mantra of equal pay for equal work, with all the issues that there are with that. At first it sounds easy, but the more you look at it the harder it gets to implement in a fair and decent way, and I don't want to wander to deep into that swamp. My point with all this was just to point out that the word "feminist" is old and has played a very important part in forming our current society, and will continue to do so for a long time.

There's a difference between objectification/over sexualization, and writing/designing a character who happens to be sexy (or is like, a femme fatale). Like that sniper chick from metal girl who "breathes through her skin" bs. THAT was just a piss poor excuse to sexualize a woman needlessly.

Certified Girl here: Absolutely agree feminism isn't about "covering up". It's about being free to wear what you want, look how you look, and be who you want to be. For some, it's modesty. For others, it's looking "sexy". It's not any one person (man, woman, or otherwise) to decide what empowers others.

A huge part of the sex negativity stems from an internalized dissatisfaction with themselves that they're projecting onto others rather than trying to address their own issues. Which isn't to say that anyone that prefers modesty falls into that category, but there are a hell of a lot of sex negative psychos out there that tire the emotion up into hatred for others on top of it. I think framing and posing is also very important when it comes to whether or not a character is being sexualized. You can have literally any character you can think off butt naked and depending on how it’s drawn it can be as sexualized as possible or not at all. Not saying character design has no influence on perception but it’s not the only thing that matters.

@I Am Mandy, Fear Me I agree with y'all Also, there's a saying in art: Any good art (whether it's in drawings/ animation/ games/ shows/ etc) has emotional impact. Emotional Impact itself comes completely from Story. Where Story is crafted by making the art being made (character/ cartoon/ comic/ etc) appealing VISUALLY. To get visual appeal you need to draw/ make characters in mind with what their goals are, fears, personality, flaws, how they grew up, etc translating that into the character with attractive appeal to get most people to read it So when you watch|read shows/ comics/ etc you're ultimately there for the character because the character makes the story in a way from what I explained (and of course writing/ writing pace for show/ etc needs to be good but you get the point) Also, when you see Batman, Superman, The Flash, Wonder-Woman, Spider-Gwen, etc they look hot/ cool/ sexy because they are visually appealing not just on sexy scale but because of everything visually blending together (but that helps quite a bit too) So characters that aren't just visually interesting but also visually attractive is a major way to get emotional impact for any art form That's what those toxic twitter/ other fake fan users don't understand Sorry if I messed up explaining anything since it's late on my end, & P.S. Simple Argument is that heroes should look physically/ attractive fit because they basically exercise all the time to fight crime/ criminals/ villains (which makes their faces/ bodies look more attractive in turn) so really it's opposite where they are shaming attractive heroes when that's how they'll look fighting crime all the time Sidenote: I'm an artist & also creating written & visually-wise unique-intriguing 100+s of original projects/ worlds/ universes for Anime/ Kid, Teen, & Adult Cartoons/ Comics/ Manga/ TV Shows/ Games/ Books/ etc etc so I'd say after 3 years of this for sure that the toxic Twitter users are out of touch for what people like in terms of how to do things/ heroes

Power Girl is an excellent character with a great, iconic, and revealing costume much like Wonder Woman. I grew up on Wonder Woman and have loved Power Girl for years as well. Both characters, when written well, are great examples of exactly the kind of fully realized characters people want female role models to be. By focusing on the costume both readers and some creators are doing the exact objectification they claim to oppose. Pay more attention to what the woman says, what she does, and what she believes than what she's wearing.

I really wasn't ready for for how *much* the history of her costume would be. Ultimately, after seeing the alternatives and hearing some of the justifications (subverting the chest symbol trope, highlighting femininity), I think the classic concept is the best, and has managed to be very distinctive and unique to her. Really, they don't need to put so much effort into redesigning her in the opposite direction. They can just be mindful of that in the ways they illustrate her. Posing, composition, technique, and all kinds of small things can add up. In that way, I think JLE had a good idea (though maybe not the greatest execution). If they do redesign her, they should embrace the boob window and do more experimentation with how it fits into the costume.

It’s funny to me seeing the “controversy” surrounding Power Girl because it’s literally, ‘does this fictional character have a right to dress sexy if she wants to’. Like there’s a lot of parallels that can be drawn between this controversy and other discussion between real life female celebrities discussing body positivity, and the attention drawn to their fashion choices. What bothers me is that the window has never been the most impractical part of her costume- you can find dresses on runways that have windows like that. The most impractical thing is the bareleg leotard combo- which is just straight up uncomfortable in real life.
@laedarkness8613

IMO the issue with this argument is that she doesn't have the ability to "choose" anything, because she's a fictional character. Powergirl isn't choosing how she looks and what she wears, the people who created and drew the character are, and those are almost entirely guys. Any argument or belief related to her costume that Powergirl says in the comics is a line that a writer wrote for her, and those are also mostly guys. And it doesn't feel right to me to say that the words and costume choices of mostly men writers and artists should be attributed to a woman simply because they're using a female character to present them. I don't think that there's anything wrong with sexy characters but I also don't think it's fair for people to frame it as a feminist statement when it's really just there to be sexy.

@@nguyendi92 Um... I never said men can't write female characters? I just don't think it's reasonable for people to dismiss criticism by saying "well the character wants it!" when the writers are men. It wouldn't be cool for a woman writer to dismiss criticism about a male character in such a way either. There isn't a problem with sexy characters but the retroactive "it's actually feminist because empowerment" is really lazy justification when we all know it's there because it's sexy. Here's something that I've been wanting to ask for a while. Do females not have a gaze, and if so how is it described? Cause I've seen videos where people call Aquaman's clothing or lack thereof a product of the male gaze as well, and that confuses me, because if attractive women are for men and attractive men are for men, it makes me think women just don't like to see. Which I know isn't true because I've seen and heard females react to shirtless male characters.
@siilverREAL
@siilverREAL 11 ай бұрын
@@VolfKami hi :) the male/female gaze tends to hinge on how the characters are being portrayed rather than just what they are. so for example aquaman and say Jacob from twilight, who are both quite buff (jacob less so tho bc hes Just Some Guy rather than the king of atlantis lol) Aquaman's primary audience is men, so instead of portraying him as something to be desired sexually, he's meant to be an audience insert. therefore, the director sends the message of "this is what men should aspire to look like" through how he's depicted by camera angles/roles in the story (just in case anyone other than the og commenter is wondering, this is what the male/female gaze refers to by the way. it's not just "women find these men attractive in real life" and stuff like that its a cinematography thing) jacob on the other hand is a love interest in a story for teenage girls, so in the female gaze of the director he's put in situations that make him seem more sexually desirable than as a character whose appearance the audience envies. obvs this just gets reversed for female characters portrayed in the male/female gaze (most of the time) and sometimes characters dont fit either. i hope this helps and i didnt come across as condescending or anything :))

LMAO! I started the video and then turned to do something else. It wasn't until over a minute in that I looked at the screen and saw the shirt you're wearing! Got me good lol

love the jughead logo! yes as you mentioned Power Girl uses her Boob Window pretty much the same way Frank uses the image of the skull on the his chest they do produce different effects but still a charisma attack if you will.

The chest window of Power Girl isn't sexist, it is empowering women. She wears her chest window suit because she is a strong and confident woman comfortable in her own body, not ashamed of it, nor caring of what others might say about her. She wears it because she can, and because she wants to, and if that chest window just happens to prove a distraction to some of her enemies, well, then it's just a welcome opening to take advantage of while she laughs at her enemy's stupidity at letting something silly like that distract them.

On the boob size changes , you have to compare the panels which have similar poses in relation to the direction of you viewing the character, you could compare #59 and #62 where you could observe that while the position of the chest didn't change the round outline in the left corner denoting the passing from boob to chest is going closer to the top, so in a way he was making the bigger in a more fuller aspect just like #60 and #61 they were bigger circles as you can observe the space between them increased.

Honestly I completely disagree on it looking ridiculous on male characters the chest window looks great on them! I wish it was more utilized on male character design

Reminds me reading Kingdom Come by Alex Ross… when Clark Kent, Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince meet in that restaurant and Bruce wants to know the cut of the Power Girl chicken sandwich and the waiter simply answers „breast“…
