The one issue with Gwenpool is that, paradoxically, her original series was *so* good that I wouldn’t even really want a continuation of it. Hastings wrote a fantastic story and managed to “crash land” it with an outstanding send-off after it got cancelled. You would *love* to see more of her like this, but it might just not be replicable in the first place.

I totally get your gripes with modern Deadpool comics, but I feel there is a clear distinction between Deadpool when he’s written well and “Memepool” as fans have dubbed him. When the writer knows what they’re doing, Deadpool is a snarky, somewhat comedic character, but his stories often focus on his sadistic nature, his self-loathing mindset, and his desire for redemption. Memepool, on the other hand, is an obnoxious loud mouth that solely exists to entertain tweens, scream about chimichangas, and sell cheap merchandise at Hot Topic.

I’m what you’d call a Deadpool “early adopter” - discovered him when X-Force #2 came out, and absolutely loved the Joe Kelly run, as well as Rick Remender’s Uncanny X-Force. My biggest problem with Memepool is that other characters tolerate him. Like his skill set isn’t so amazing that other superheroes need to have him around, yet he teams up with all the other stars and they just roll their eyes at his antics.

I liked Gwenpool's guest appearance in the 2021 MODOK mini-series. She actually manages to kill MODOK, but when she realizes that not only is this his book, but he's portrayed somewhat sympathetically, she asks the reader to pretend the last few pages never happened. I feel like a fun direction they could have taken Gwenpool is to essentially make her fight off-the-wall, golden-era comics villains. Their powersets, combined with Gwenpool's still-very-fragile regular human body, would make for a fun ride. I feel like the problem they made right off the bat was writing Gwenpool's actual fights, not their banter, like Deadpool's. It kind of meant they had to have a more frantic character, that wouldn't match well with the story they wanted to tell. They HAD to explain why Gwen, who was pretty much the most normal person ever, fit into Deadpool's style of combat. Making Gwenpool fight more like the Punisher, and deal with wackier powers, would set her apart from the both of them.

I know writers of varying writing styles, but a lot of the time it just feels like a genuine lack of concern about continuity or making keeping characters in character. It's both the strength and weakness of the shared universe with loose continuity, every new writer puts a different spin on the character to see what sticks, but for a marginally popular one like this the character eventually become incoherent because no one writers her long enough to have a definitive take others can easily copy in guest appearances.

@hfar_in_the_sky
@hfar_in_the_sky 2 ай бұрын
@@erikwirfs-brock2432Even worse IMO is when a writer decides to write an edgy grimdark story on a character to “make their mark.” Which is why at one point we had so many beloved B and C list comic characters getting k***ed off with no rhyme or reason. Sue Dibny, the beloved wife of Elongated Man, springs to mind. Gal had been appearing since the silver age and was generally liked by fans for her spunky personality and genuinely fun sense of humor. But in the pre-reboot timeline, one of her final appearances was getting k***ed of (for incredibly stupid reasons at that) and in the same comic the person in charge of the comic retroactively had her be a victim of r**e. A “story element” that never gets resolved and is there purely for drama. A good author or authors can lift a character to greatness, but a terrible author can all too easily grind a character into the ground

Gurihiru's art really helped sell the feel of Gwenpool's character. Gwenpool Strikes Back, on top of just being written as lol so random a lot of the time also made her appear extremely unhinged with its art. Even with her original appearance it wasn't until Gurihiru started drawing her that I feel like her character really started to set in. Where as with Gwenpool Strikes Back a lot of the art has highly exaggerated expressions and in general makes her look far to zany and unhinged.

I agree. I wanted to see more of Gwenpool, but I didn't think I had to specify that NOT if it means being without good storytelling like her original run had, and certainly NOT if it means her being a twisted-up echo of the character I came to know. The "strikes back" story could just not exist, it doesn't have much of a story, and it goes in circles on what its about and why it's there, (the end backpedaling and calling it all just a manic episode doesn't redeem it for me). Her joining the roster of background mutants doesn't seem like it's all that good of an ending for her either, since she put on a costume to avoid being cannon fodder, and a lot of those background mutants end up being other character's stories cannon fodder.

Part of what I find interesting about Gwenpool (with my admittedly rather limited knowledge of comics) is that, while the abilities she developed are in the same vein as Deadpool, they're not quite identical. Deadpool is a comic book character who is aware that he's a comic book character and is aware of the medium; Gweenpool is canonically is canonically from the "real" world and more often directly interacts with the medium itself (though Deadpool has been known to do that as well, like in Marvel vs Capcom he beats his opponents with his own health bar for example). Her transplanted nature means that in a way, she doesn't fully gel with the comic world and as such is not only aware of the medium, but can interact with it, which is beyond simple 4th wall breaking.

Honestly my biggest gripe with the Love Unlimited arc is how it had a flashback depicting Gwen's home universe. I think Gwen's home universe should never be directly depicted on-panel, because her home universe *isn't part of a comic book.*

16:16 Fun fact about this, male Sharks don’t actually have 2 penises. What you see on their pelvic fins are actually Claspers. Unlike a penis which delivers sperm through the urethra, claspers “clasp” themselves into the walls of their mate’s oviduct which keeps it in place, as the muscles in the claspers push the sperm down the clasper. To put it simply, a penis is a tube slide, and a clasper is an escalator. They’ll get you from point A to point B, but they do it differently and are not the same.

Hey Drake, you described the issue with gwen in the real world as "A flashback issue" and that really confuses me. Its not made entirely clear that that world is what really happened before she came to 616 or if that is simply her mind erased and sent into a made up world. You would think that the future heroes who trapped her in there would have made the world a lot more enjoyable so that she wouldn't try to escape but idk. I'd really like to understand that part cause even after reading it twice I still don't fully get it.
@blakecook9266
@blakecook9266 Жыл бұрын
She was sent to a made up world that was supposed to put her off the path of entering the comic world. Unfortunately for the future heroes, since Gwen recognized that she was inside a comic, she escaped. But it was likely very similar to her original situation, with only the difference that she was talked out of entering that portal thing.

In my opinion, Gwen feels more like a Self-Insert character for Marvel. Think about it for a second, she’s a character from the real world that gets the ability to go to the Marvel universe and back to our reality at will, dressed like a better Gender-swapped Deadpool and does the same type a shit minus the powers and every single comic that’s made about her puts the entire Marvel comics universe centered around her like the Sun blipped out of existence and a new one came in out of nowhere, a cash-grab may be what you’d call her, but for me it sounds like a character someone at MHQ (Marvel Headquarters) made themselves into a casual Marvel comic without consequences and got to run away Scott-free. I feel she’s a character worth dropping just for the example I made, a character someone made just for their own self-centered gain.

Still thinking that a key issue with Gwenpool was the timing, with all the MCU vs Fox and Sony thing. At the height of Gwenpool's success, in any other context, she would have gotten lots of extra media, and the MCU would have definitely included her in some form. However, a variant of a Sony-owned character based off a Fox-owned character meant that she was certainly in a sort of black list. Had this occurred now, maybe she would still be popular, and be included next to Deadpool

Gwen being aroace would probably be more accepted if they noted that from the get-go rather than have her be simping over the other characters like we saw previously. As for Gwen overall, I feel the issue is mainly writers don't know what to do with her. Alot of them mean well, but aren't that much for creativity. Many of them lean toward novelty than depth (ironically enough, the novelty angle should work for Gwen, but it still misses). I guess the thing is figuring out what Gwen is meant for. What sort of stories would people wanna see of her? And if we figure that out, it should make things easier.

Yeah, it took me a while to figure out why it bugged me a little that they made her aroace (not wanting to be hateful, just the writing seemed off to me about it in some way) & it was definitely due to it feeling to me like her writing in Unbelievable was intending to imply her being bi in some form. Agreed. For a while now, I've had the idea of Gwenpool appearing in Spidey's comic and ending an issue by asking the readers to vote on whether or not Marvel should undo One More Day. Assuming the fans vote for it, the story would then have Gwen somehow do it (possibly with help from Doctor Strange) so Peter and MJ could be married again, MJ would be pregnant, and the whole Parker Industries stuff would be erased from canon. We could even have Paul reveal he was Mephisto all along and get taken down by Squirrel Girl's squirrels. The downside is this would mean Aunt May has to die from her bullet wound returning. We could have Aunt May learn about all this before they make the change and decide herself to go with it as she's ready to pass on, and she wants Peter to be happy. Before her passing, Gwenpool could take Peter and Aunt May to the Gutter Space and show them numerous panels of May's appearances throughout the decades in Marvel comics history, so this can be a big, touching send-off for her character. Then after dying, it can show Aunt May reuniting with Uncle Ben. Peter and MJ prepare to be parents, and Gwenpool leaves while congratulating herself. What do you think?

The fact that Gwenpool, far and away the most prominent of the Deadpool spinoff characters, WAS NOT in Deadpool & Wolverine, basically guaranteed that Marvel intentionally saved her for a later purpose. Seriously? That was just wayyy to preachy. Gwenpool isn't some raunchy person who has sex with every single person she meets, but there are multiple moments in her series where she goes: "yeah, this is so hot" and to my understanding, that doesn't really fly well with aroace people. And even if my info on this is wrong and I'm just talking outta my ass, this "development" of hers was not natural, it just came out of nowhere. Create an original character that fits these qualities, instead of taking established characters and labeling them something that was not intended. At the very least, make it make sense. Develop this properly. And christ, looking at the online discourse from people who ARE aroace, they don't really fuck with this due to the misrepresentation of the term, which again shows that this writer is only virtue signaling. It's all fake.

Im gonna be real for a second, as someone with BPD gwen is flawless bpd rep. Like i am not lying when i say that she exemplifies every symptom in her best runs. like basically textbook bpd. its wild how good it is. Especially because shes so likable and sells the most irrational parts of bpd and makes it feel believable. Like it makes you understand how much she hurts and why shes willing to throw her life away over things that arent really a big deal. Its such good bpd rep that it actually makes me question if shes really asexual or just believes she is because she want to be in a position where someone can leave her. AND I SHOULD CLARIFY THAT THATS NOT UNREASONABLE TO BELIEVE! i did that! Its a pretty common bpd thing. And if gwenpool isnt actually asexual and just terrified of intimacy thats gonna get a stabding ovation from me. That would be amazingly spot on and perfect rep of bpd and how it affects identity.

I fell in love with the Unbelievable Gwenpool series. I really loved that her superpower was just basically be a comic book fan that got transported to the 616 universe. Its also funny whenever she calls heroes with secret identities by their realnames my favorite instance is actually in her Venomvesre spin off where she is basically trying to keep her work boss from finding out Matt Murdock is Daredevil because of a doodle she made on some documents her boss pick up. Also let not forget that in her series 616 Doctor Strange saw a movie theater with the Doctor Strange movie and said Benedict Cumberbatch was a good choice. I really would love to see Gwen get a main comic series again. Better yet I think it be great if she got an animated show or MCU show and have the whole thing being she got transported to the show from the comics. Also if they did an animated show I think it should be a comedy series like Harley Quinn as that would fit her character perfectly.

I remember watching your original video about her and thinking “this all sounds really cool I should read some of those comics” and then I totally forgot and never did oops. But watching this video and hear about the rest of her story, I still kinda want to. Hopefully I remember this time. I actually kinda like that final explanation for it all and think it ties everything together. I feel like this whole story shows what I’ve thought for a while that some characters are great in short bursts, not every character needs to have an ongoing title or needs to appear in other characters stories. Some characters should have a handful of issues to make a trade what a team of creators have an idea then be out back for a bit. Also had heard that she came out as aroace but didn’t read about how, but I love that that was how, I think that’s a great story both for her and to introduce the less known queer identity to the mainstream (or at least as mainstream as reads the webcomics). It’s nice as someone who is myself and now I do want to read that one specifically even if not the others. Thanks for making this video Drake!
