I totally get your gripes with modern Deadpool comics, but I feel there is a clear distinction between Deadpool when he’s written well and “Memepool” as fans have dubbed him. When the writer knows what they’re doing, Deadpool is a snarky, somewhat comedic character, but his stories often focus on his sadistic nature, his self-loathing mindset, and his desire for redemption. Memepool, on the other hand, is an obnoxious loud mouth that solely exists to entertain tweens, scream about chimichangas, and sell cheap merchandise at Hot Topic.

I’m what you’d call a Deadpool “early adopter” - discovered him when X-Force #2 came out, and absolutely loved the Joe Kelly run, as well as Rick Remender’s Uncanny X-Force. My biggest problem with Memepool is that other characters tolerate him. Like his skill set isn’t so amazing that other superheroes need to have him around, yet he teams up with all the other stars and they just roll their eyes at his antics.

@@Lawgamer411 YES. I love the movies so much. Obviously the action and jokes are really awesome and funny, but it wouldn't work if the movies had no emotional center. They really grounded Deadpool emotionally and made him a character I can care about, not just a joke machine. He's so much more likeable in the movies than in some of the comics.

The one issue with Gwenpool is that, paradoxically, her original series was *so* good that I wouldn’t even really want a continuation of it. Hastings wrote a fantastic story and managed to “crash land” it with an outstanding send-off after it got cancelled. You would *love* to see more of her like this, but it might just not be replicable in the first place.

I liked Gwenpool's guest appearance in the 2021 MODOK mini-series. She actually manages to kill MODOK, but when she realizes that not only is this his book, but he's portrayed somewhat sympathetically, she asks the reader to pretend the last few pages never happened. I feel like a fun direction they could have taken Gwenpool is to essentially make her fight off-the-wall, golden-era comics villains. Their powersets, combined with Gwenpool's still-very-fragile regular human body, would make for a fun ride. I feel like the problem they made right off the bat was writing Gwenpool's actual fights, not their banter, like Deadpool's. It kind of meant they had to have a more frantic character, that wouldn't match well with the story they wanted to tell. They HAD to explain why Gwen, who was pretty much the most normal person ever, fit into Deadpool's style of combat. Making Gwenpool fight more like the Punisher, and deal with wackier powers, would set her apart from the both of them.

I know writers of varying writing styles, but a lot of the time it just feels like a genuine lack of concern about continuity or making keeping characters in character. It isn't until about 2008-2009 when Daniel Way began writing Deadpool he went overboard with the wacky shit and all the obnoxious love for Mexican food. Gurihiru's art really helped sell the feel of Gwenpool's character. Gwenpool Strikes Back, on top of just being written as lol so random a lot of the time also made her appear extremely unhinged with its art. Even with her original appearance it wasn't until Gurihiru started drawing her that I feel like her character really started to set in. Where as with Gwenpool Strikes Back a lot of the art has highly exaggerated expressions and in general makes her look far to zany and unhinged.

It's both the strength and weakness of the shared universe with loose continuity, every new writer puts a different spin on the character to see what sticks, but for a marginally popular one like this the character eventually become incoherent because no one writers her long enough to have a definitive take others can easily copy in guest appearances.

I agree. I wanted to see more of Gwenpool, but I didn't think I had to specify that NOT if it means being without good storytelling like her original run had, and certainly NOT if it means her being a twisted-up echo of the character I came to know. The "strikes back" story could just not exist, it doesn't have much of a story, and it goes in circles on what its about and why it's there, (the end backpedaling and calling it all just a manic episode doesn't redeem it for me). Her joining the roster of background mutants doesn't seem like it's all that good of an ending for her either, since she put on a costume to avoid being cannon fodder, and a lot of those background mutants end up being other character's stories cannon fodder.

Part of what I find interesting about Gwenpool (with my admittedly rather limited knowledge of comics) is that, while the abilities she developed are in the same vein as Deadpool, they're not quite identical. Deadpool is a comic book character who is aware that he's a comic book character and is aware of the medium; Gweenpool is canonically is canonically from the "real" world and more often directly interacts with the medium itself (though Deadpool has been known to do that as well, like in Marvel vs Capcom he beats his opponents with his own health bar for example). Her transplanted nature means that in a way, she doesn't fully gel with the comic world and as such is not only aware of the medium, but can interact with it, which is beyond simple 4th wall breaking.

Hey Drake, you described the issue with gwen in the real world as "A flashback issue" and that really confuses me. Its not made entirely clear that that world is what really happened before she came to 616 or if that is simply her mind erased and sent into a made up world. You would think that the future heroes who trapped her in there would have made the world a lot more enjoyable so that she wouldn't try to escape but idk. I'd really like to understand that part cause even after reading it twice I still don't fully get it.

She was sent to a made up world that was supposed to put her off the path of entering the comic world. I like how you always see Allo people Saying that Gwen being Aroace makes no sense, its a "retcon" and that she was clearly never intended to be Aroace, but we see it. As soon as you ask Aroace people about her its just Every detail makes perfect sense, and every part of her character is so relatable, but most other people just don't see it.

I fell in love with the Unbelievable Gwenpool series. I really loved that her superpower was just basically be a comic book fan that got transported to the 616 universe. Its also funny whenever she calls heroes with secret identities by their realnames my favorite instance is actually in her Venomvesre spin off where she is basically trying to keep her work boss from finding out Matt Murdock is Daredevil because of a doodle she made on some documents her boss pick up. Also let not forget that in her series 616 Doctor Strange saw a movie theater with the Doctor Strange movie and said Benedict Cumberbatch was a good choice. I really would love to see Gwen get a main comic series again. Better yet I think it be great if she got an animated show or MCU show and have the whole thing being she got transported to the show from the comics. Also if they did an animated show I think it should be a comedy series like Harley Quinn as that would fit her character perfectly.

Honestly my biggest gripe with the Love Unlimited arc is how it had a flashback depicting Gwen's home universe. I think Gwen's home universe should never be directly depicted on-panel, because her home universe *isn't part of a comic book.*

There was one thing I’ve always been curious about in the Marvel Comic Universe and that was when Professor X became president. I’ve seen this comic pop-up so much on TikTok and I’ve just become so curious, and I was wondering if you in the future would be willing to do a video on it? Thanks again can’t wait for the next video!

Seriously? That was just wayyy to preachy. Gwenpool isn't some raunchy person who has sex with every single person she meets, but there are multiple moments in her series where she goes: "yeah, this is so hot" and to my understanding, that doesn't really fly well with aroace people. And even if my info on this is wrong and I'm just talking outta my ass, this "development" of hers was not natural, it just came out of nowhere. Create an original character that fits these qualities, instead of taking established characters and labeling them something that was not intended. At the very least, make it make sense. Develop this properly. And christ, looking at the online discourse from people who ARE aroace, they don't really fuck with this due to the misrepresentation of the term, which again shows that this writer is only virtue signaling. It's all fake.

I'll be honest gwenpool to this day is still probably my favoirte marvel character. not because she has the flashy powers or anything else i just really like her character. She has problems but then again most characters in comics and manga do. But in a universe where theres so many one way villains or heros having gwenpool kinda be just an omage to what fans would probably do is just a fun idea for me (especially since im a cosplayer so theres that aspect as well)

I remember watching your original video about her and thinking “this all sounds really cool I should read some of those comics” and then I totally forgot and never did oops. But watching this video and hear about the rest of her story, I still kinda want to. Hopefully I remember this time. I actually kinda like that final explanation for it all and think it ties everything together. I feel like this whole story shows what I’ve thought for a while that some characters are great in short bursts, not every character needs to have an ongoing title or needs to appear in other characters stories. Some characters should have a handful of issues to make a trade what a team of creators have an idea then be out back for a bit. Also had heard that she came out as aroace but didn’t read about how, but I love that that was how, I think that’s a great story both for her and to introduce the less known queer identity to the mainstream (or at least as mainstream as reads the webcomics). It’s nice as someone who is myself and now I do want to read that one specifically even if not the others. Thanks for making this video Drake!

It's nice to see that people like Gwenpool and she has a big fan base. I love Hasting's run and its pretty much the only one I acknowledge. It was actually clever at being meta about how comic books are run. I'm hesitant about these other runs. I've seen parts of them and even when they do try to be clever it doesn't come quite as close as Hasting's run. I just prefer Hasting's run and keep it in my mind as Gwenpool. I've made my peace with that. This is a very good video and thank you for compiling Gwenpool's history.
