Wally Wood , who co-created Power Girl , said in an interview he drew her that way to see how far DC editors would let him get away with that ; so far, to this day , there's been no opposition to her shape. Besides , he's drawn more shapely women. His artwork has been collected & published in various books. It's worth checking out.

I kinda wish their was a short gag where it's revealed that many people have been told many different reasons for the boob window by Power Girl, as she makes up a reason every time she's asked as kinda a joke on her various origins, and when it's brought up to her she just replies that she made up various reasons to screw with people and there's no real reason, she just thinks it looks better and doesn't give a shit what people say.

Power Girl was one of the characters whose comics deprogrammed me from the pretty horrible things I was taught about women as a young child. I never thought much about her boob window being a problem. I did appreciate it a few times in private, but never really thought it degraded her or made her stories less powerful or important. Only that she happened to be a character who deserved respect -and- was the pinnacle of physical attractiveness.

@@aarqon That's a specious argument. Biological sexual attraction is largely based on one's genetic fitness to create successful offspring. For men, that generally means a woman who can safely bear children (large pelvic girdle) and feed them (large breasts suggest this, although breast size does not have anything to do with lactation production). For women, powerful forms and physical fitness are the thing. So, yes, while over-muscled hero design does play into power fantasies, those power fantasies are, in part, based on a perception of the biological reality of being attractive to the opposite sex. (Mind you, this is the purely biological aspect. Psychology plays a huge role in the whole picture.)

I think Power Girl should be kept the way she is, as a kind of tribute to Wally Wood; as well as all the other writers, and artists- in all genres, whose work often goes under-appreciated by the people at the top. Wally Wood sounds like a really interesting person; it’s such a tragedy that he felt compelled to commit suicide, thinking he had wasted his life; that nothing he had done in his career even mattered, with him actually seeming to regret his decision to work in the comic book industry, saying: “If I had it all to do over again, I’d cut off my hands.” It’s so sad that he felt that way, despite his work still receiving recognition, and acclaim, many decades after his death; which is why I think all his contributions to comics, even petty ones like the size of Power Girl’s breasts, should be kept, as a kind of monument (and what a mon- no, I won’t go there haha) to all those who feel their life’s work has been meaningless. It shows that, even if you see no point in your own work- for whatever reason; it doesn’t mean there was actually no point to what you did. But that’s just my opinion; others are available...they’re wrong, obviously, but they’re available nonetheless 😉 haha.

Wally Wood, as Harlan Ellison laid out in his excellent essay on comics "Did Your Mother Throw Yours Out Too?", had a really tragic end to his life, which eventually involved headaches that killed his ability to draw. I suppose my question is; how many people were drawn to the comic by her boobs, but then stayed because of the narratives and characters? Recently the "The truth about Star Trek Voyager" vid popped up in my feed where they talked about how Jeri Ryan's Seven of Nine was introduced to draw in more viewers. But besides Jeri being stunning, especially in that catsuit, she still got to play an interesting character and explore different aspects of their heroes and villains. Sex sells, but you still have to make a product worth a damn.

There is, indeed, "a decent amount to cover." It seems that the artists have never gotten around to covering most of it. The "boob window" is probably actually a tactical device by which Power Girl is able to momentarily distract her opponents, before lowering the boob, I mean "boom," on them.

The breast window started because of sexism, but what we are left with is a design that highlights the very sexism that caused it. Like, second wave feminism says "close the window, you are not an object for men's desires and dressing this way empowers them to view you as less than a person", third wave says "dress how you want, the reactions to your dress are proof of progress versus chauvinism." Both are right, both are wrong, and so you are left with Power Girl in the middle, she has the strength to dress however the fuck she wants, and should not be shamed out of it, but for as long as she dresses that way she will in part be putting her objectification at the literal core of her character. To me I think that this is kinda the perfect inherent contradiction for a character arc. That "I don't have a symbol of my own" line strikes home, even if it was just a scape goat of the time. Power girl closing the boob window HAS to be a character driven moment for her, SHE has to choose to close it or choose to not close it, and live with the consequences of her decision. The artist doesn't get the right to take that choice away from her, they just have to find a version of her that would close the boob window or find a believable version that would not. I like the boob window, but see it more as an opportunity to develop a complex character than as a unquestionable "must have" of her character design.

The men who set fashion trends behind the scenes? The male gaze? What does "sexy" look like through the feminine gaze? Can we ever separate our male-centric idea of sexiness to figure out what a wholly female-centric idea would be? Is sexiness even about pleasing ourselves, or is there always some part of it that will be construed as pleasing others?

Both those books sold multiple prints. All the boy's including my son were all over the F4 costume. Hey always been Pro Window. It's like with Wonder Woman, Bigger and Bigger until, how in gods name do those things stay in? She use sticky Tape, Gorilla Tape? Seriously. Look at Supergirl now, just a Girl. Not saying that's bad just wholsome. Women have always been worshipped in Comic Books. It's just the way it is now and sadly with prices as horrible as they are kids today can't even buy more than a book or two these days. It's people like me who barely keep the books going. Everything is on the Big Screen now. Kids see it all there. Not like I did in the age of 10 cent books. Kinda miss that stuff. Being 57 sucks sometimes.

That's actually one of the things she ends up saying to Superman at one point. I think he's reminding her she's has every right to the S symbol that she does. I wish they would constantly keep that her on even if they don't ever cover up the window. I always liked the conversation she has with Superman regarding this and how she's willing to show her vulnerability in front of him. I've never had a problem with the hole or that her breast were large. That said some could draw them way to big to the point it's even even remotely funny or interesting. What's bothered me in the past is her not having the symbol or being recognized as Kryptonian. I was really happy when that got fixed and they fully recognized her as an alternate Supergirl that she is.

Power Girl or Power Woman? I would see her having a problem with flying. The chest window isn't very aerodynamic. One could imagine it acting like the intake manifold of a jumbo jet. When she flies it must get airflow through her cleavage where the faster she flies, might cause a high-pitched whistling or a violent flapping vibration. How about the things that might get caught in her cleavage like flying debris, bugs, and birds. She's (bullet) proof like Superman right? The ricochet patterns would be very unpredictable or is it going to be like a shooting range where the bullets hit her chest, flatten out into discs, and slide into her cleavage window? I think I remembered Wonder Woman saying that she didn't have enough Golden Lasso to wrap around Power Woman to get her to tell the truth about where she came from. A lot of male villains forgot she has heat vision because they never looked up past a certain point.

The biggest question I have is "Why all the controversy over a freaking comic book character?" Yeah, this is a loaded question, and rightly so. As an artist of some skill myself, if people criticize my work simply because they don't like its theme, mood, style, etc. I will just do more of the same! Perhaps it will cause them to have a brain aneurysm! If so, it is because they chose to worry too much over something trivial! Triviality, is what drives them, rather than reality! The truth is, no one has the right to tell a free minded artist what he or she can and cannot do. I work from my own imagination to create pieces that are unique. I don't do cookie cutter art! To me the best tool of a true artist is imagination. That has never went hand in hand with conformity, and so I will not do so either!

People built like Power Girl or Wonder Woman or Superman/Batman....yeah, there are some, but you don't see them every day, everywhere. People that are both attractive AND super-fit/buff. @sos sos When you draw a person for a comic, you can't use completely realistic dimensions. It doesn't look right on the page. They tend to look short and fat if you do. So you have to adjust the dimensions to compensate. You have to make them taller and more slender than normal to make them look right in the drawing. This is also fantasy vs real life. Which pushes things even more in that direction. If you want realism, put down the comic and go outside. There are plenty of realistic looking people walking around. But that's not what people read comics or watch movies for.

The second explanation for why there’s a boob window is so laughably bad when the first one isn’t really bad. I have a friend who’s pretty busty and has always been super self conscious about it, which is why she loves Power Girl so much as she can see herself reflected in her, just like how other people can see parts of their physicality in other characters (I confess that Nightwing means a lot to me mostly because I’m a guy who’s always been self conscious about his big ass, lol). Ultimately, I think redesigning Power Girl so that she’s no longer busty results in more being taken away than there is to be gained.

You beat me to it. It's a great story (and Wood was a great artist) but unfortunately untrue.

Would have loved to see her fill the window with something significant to her at some point after Jeff Johns introduced the idea, but there's also nothing wrong with her just being on the bountiful side of the spectrum and proud. Frankly her original 90s attitude _was_ very empowering, and if she's "the one with the boob window" like Supes is "the one with his underwear outside his spandex," all the more Power to her!

Kryptonian females store their solar energy in the breast tissue. Hence the boob window helps her stay charged up with more direct access to sunlight. And if see the cosplay it's really not that immodest, compared to others

Is that true or are you joking. Ive never heard the Krypton boob thing before. Wouldnt it apply to any exposed skin period?

Kryptonian males store the solar energy in their muscular mass. Which is why Superman is so cut.

Superman's costume is a solar energy focus item. Since PG doesn't have a kryptonian outfit she has to expose more skin. So when her costume is damaged it actually helps her.

So when kryptonian women nurse their young they are producing milk with large amounts of yellow sun energy.

I personally believe there's good sexualization and bad sexualization, it all depends on the character and the context of the story. Power Girl's boob window does play a role on her character and appeal, she knows she's busty and that makes her feel confident. It also contributes to the whole narrative of the JSA and the generational gap between superheroes, as the original members were all white men while their new sucessors had a lot of diversity, most of them were female and there were different races and sexualities. Power Girl choosing to be sexually appealing despite being the sucessor of the boy scout Superman, primary superhero in the old conservative world, shows how much she's willing to differentiate herself from her predecessor and how society has changed and it's more accepting and liberal.

Power Girl is one of my top 3 favorite Super Heroes. I feel that she is a better as an alternate Superman than alternate Supergirl, per se. She is funny, gorgeous, ultra powerful, and kicks all kinds of ass. Where Superman is the epitome of the ultimate man, Power Girl is the epitome of the ultimate woman. Power Girl is awesome

I love how you objectively address these topics and ask for discussion! I wish I found your vids sooner 'cause you talk about a lot of the stuff I think about too. Personally, I think Power Girl's costume is boring. It's just a plain white swimsuit with a red cape. So a revamp could be nice. There are women who got big boobs (although that quote wrong, big boobs don't necessarily mean healthy 'cause there can be back probs, etc.). I'm not a fan of how they present her boobs as if they're more important than her face (which is often masterfully drawn with great expression!) I think I'd be cooler with the boob window if more comic guys got the logically ridiculous costume too but as it stands most are covered up from neck to toe in armor. Double standards are stupid and insulting. Like a friend once said to me, it'd be more equal if everyone got the sexy costume makeover!

At first, I thought that the 2005 reason for her window was going to be ridiculous like the most modern one. But it was surprisingly moving. I love the idea that it has nothing to do with her body, but with the shadow she's always stood in. That's good writing.

I do remember reading in a comic long ago. She states in a thought balloon that the reason for the "boob window" was because she doesn't like wearing a mask; and since most criminals are male, she doesn't really need one.

Like criminals don't remember faces?? Outlaw bikers take photos of each other, so they can show any pictures of undercover cops or police informants to other chapters and whack them on the courthouse steps from a speeding chopper. That's why superheroes need masks!

Here is my theory. Kryptonians absorb the rays of the yellow sun to get their power, and the light is absorbed through their skin. If Power Girl has a window in her chest, that would allow her to absorb more solar rays which would make her more powerful.
