With his commercial checkride coming up soon, it was high time that we practiced more power off 180 approaches. It's one of the items on that test that is failed quite a lot, so it's important to get as much practice in as possible!
Enjoy the landings

Just passed my commercial check ride about a week ago! Basically the private check ride on steroids. The thing I was most nervous about was the power off 180, but once you get through it it’s smooth sailing from there. Just make sure your ground knowledge is strong and that you always stay in control of the airplane.

Passed my commercial checkride a month ago. Although it is similar to the private pilot it was more about accuracy and energy management. I found it to be pretty fun. Keep up the awesome videos!

The power off 180 was the last maneuver on both my Commercial and CFI check ride. My commercial training was in a Piper Arrow. As you know, the sink rate is "like a falling brick." I concentrated on 3 very important areas: where is the wind coming from when turning towards the runway, how much ground am I covering as approaching the runway after the initial turn and energy management. My ahah moment was for my phase check I asked my instructor if I could do the power off 180 at night with no landing light. I picked a nice clear night in February and nailed 4 off them, on the 1000 foot marker. My last maneuver, on the CFI check ride, after teaching a no flap short approach was the 180 power off. Quote by the FAA examiner, " I will buy you a Coke, if you can hit the 1000 foot marker. Remember your check ride will all come down to this." To make matters even more exciting I was following.a Gulf Stream on short final. I looked down and hit the outer far edge of the marker. Did not get the Coke as promised, but did get my CFI certificate. This a must teach maneuver for all of my PPL students. Thanks for the video and sharing "young Bob's" journey.

Commecial checkride is just a harder private checkride. Maneuvers dont have to be perfect but just looking for professional control of the a/c. Oral is just ppl oral (a little more in depth) + cax privledges. Once you get the power off 180 done you are golden!

Absolutely. I found the commercial checkride to be the easiest out of them all.

I was just at the final time for checkride when we had some issues around the home I had to stop and take care of. I kept flying 2 or 3 times a week to build time and practice. I was getting so damn cocky that I would bet I could make wild crap and he was like no way and I made it. When you get comfortable things just seem so much easier I guess. It's time for me to strap down now and go finish it since I was almost there, life always gets in the way when you think you have it made! Good video.

The three CFIs video was actually the first video I saw of yours, and that part with "For queen and country" made me have to double take, and make sure you weren't flying out of some Orlando England that I'd never heard of :D

In my commercial about a month ago, i was about to go around on the power off 180, then a gust of wind came and lifted me just enough to make it. It was awesome!

Passed my commercial a little more than a month ago. The ride was very different. He changed the way I did chandelles. The other weird thing was we did the landings at a aiport other than where the chekcride originated so that made power off 180s and all the other landings more difficult
@LewDixAviation
@LewDixAviation 2 жыл бұрын
Yea that’s the thing.. you never know where you’re gonna be doing the landings so it’s tough to prepare

@LewDix Aviation hey if you do another power off 180 vid again, it would be good to see how different bank angles on the turn back affect glide range, ie shallower bank less altitude loss but longer distance. Wonder if there is a "sweet spot" for bank angle on the 180 turnback?

Best glide down to the second stripe works for me 99% of the time, if I’m fast I go one stripe back towards the threshold and float longer.

Single engine add-on on Friday. Shortest list of stuff on a checkride yet, but I think I'm more nervous about it than any of the others.

what do you think the odds are that any actual emergency engine out scenario will be anything remotely similar to this maneuver? i'd say very remote. if you simply do every single routine landing in a single engine trainer style aircraft with a no power approach you will become far better than the average pilot at this simple maneuver. on the other hand if you go to 3000 feet above an airport and cut the engine to idle and practice losing that excess altitude while arriving at the key position close to pattern altitude and gliding all the way to touchdown with out power you will learn something that might save you and your airplane in an actual engine out emergency.

My commercial checkride was in smoke, and no chance it was VMC. When we came back ATIS said 2SM and we had to do an ILS. Oh, and the wind was gusting 27 knots, somehow did the best PO180 of my life. All in all, a very good day.
