A tornado came through my neighborhood a few years back. We lost power for a month. A gas grill will cook your food just as well as the stove inside. Your food in your freezer has to be eaten first. I keep a good dozen freezer packs in mine and a large bag of ice. This helps add several days to the defrosting. A plastic kiddy pool will catch a lot of rain. Might not be the best to drink but it will flush a toilet. Cheap solar lights make good nightlights in the house. A battery-powered radio playing music can keep you from going bat-shit. We are no longer used to living with silence. And I hate to mention it, but bad people come out when the world is dark. Be safe.

Apparently, keeping those freezer packs on the top of (inside) your freezer is the optimum place to have them as warm air rises. Also cover the top of your freezer with blankets and polystyrene is good too.

I was gathering up some items for a garage sale. Two of the items were, a chafing dish, and a brand new STERNO unit that I never had the opportunity to use. I jerked those babies off that table and put them aside. I can sell them later, if we don't need them, but in the midst of the creatures evil actions so far, having things to heat up food is a bonus. Also, someone suggested getting some solar spotlights, as they last up to 8 hrs., and they can be recharged in the mornings. One does do a good job of providing enough light to safely go through a room to get things, get ready for bed, relax,and have a cup of tea, etc. I am a bit concerned about creeps trying to hawk our preps, because they didn't do any of their own. And also purifying water, and getting THE REAL scoop on just HOW long does bottled water last, and distilled water. I saw a couple of the purifiers, and the one with the plant pots was more simple and quick than the one with the food grade buckets on living on a dime. Love the DIY shallow well too! Such creative minds...I can't keep up. LOL

Years ago my parents had a fire from candles catching paint on a cabinet on fire. I was only one home & my dad had a bad cold & had taken medicine to sleep. Luckily mostly smoke damage but it was scary. The solar lanterns are inexpensive & safe.

One time we used a 6 man tent to create a microclimate. We placed mylar blankets layered with wool blankets over the top, placed a blowup mattress inside and used a solar generator to power an electric blanket. Toasty warm!

I made the mistake of not being preppared for this. We had a bad storm on the east coast which knocked out our power grid for 104,000 people. I had a tooth pulled in the morning before it and didn't think the storm would be too bad. Boy was i wrong, so I didn't prep ahead with water, alternate cooking, or even fill my car with gas. But i did have a weeks worth of food, drinking water, lights, batteries and candles so It was a SHTF kind of situation, but i wasn't as prepared as I'd like to have been. If you have the extra water, fill up a juice bottle or even a jar with water and toss in a glowstick and it throws the light much better, creating a lantern of sorts! Or your bathtub. Kids love it because its fun to play in and will help entertain them, but once you snap the glowsticks and put them in water they give much more light!

We lived in an apartment for years and went through a couple of hurricanes where our power was knocked out for a week. We spent a lot of time sitting in the car to keep cool, charge our phones and listen to the radio. Getting ice was nearly impossible because everyone was after it and convenience stores quickly ran out. They always turn the electricity back on for businesses first so people can get services. The best place to find ice if you need it is at fast food restaurants. 10 lb bag a lot of times is 1.00. Since we couldn't cook because we were not allowed a bbq grill we often used chafing fuel to heat our hurricane food and it worked well. Propert ventilation is important of course!

I have several portable power stations that I can rotate to keep the fridge and freezer running, so I can solar charge one while the other one works. This past winter we had a power outage for three days. I kept the internet on, lights on, the fridge & freezer on, and my grandson had internet tv. I am grateful we have a gas stove. I kept the house warm with big soup pots of water on the burners, and I burned "safe heat" in a mini wood stove.

4 day blizzard/power outage in South Dakota in February and we stayed perfectly warm in an interior room with 3 candles burning. So if you don’t have the room or the $ for a wood stove, stock up on dollar store glass religious candles!

Don't forget if you have solar lights outside on your lawn/trees/driveway, bring them inside. You can disperse them around the house providing plenty of light and it makes your house look a little less obvious in the event of civil unrest. You can buy small solar stakes at the $ dollar store.

One suggestion: Practice ahead of time, before a blackout occurs. Test your equipment, train your kids on this, make it “a game”. You may also want to try turning your power off for a full day and see how well prepared you and your loved ones really are.

This is a great suggestion. We do this regularly with our children, during different seasons and times, where we shut off all power. We also include them in discussions about different SHTF scenarios to get them thinking "What would you do if..."

Personally, I would leave power running to the fridge and then mask off light switches and unplug other non-essential devices. I wouldn't want food spoiling for a drill. Thanks!

Yes that works. I also keep glow bracelets (25 in pack at dollar tree). Great if you have kids and want light attached to stair banister or one tp holder etc. Used during Harvey successfully. There are solar crank lanterns as well, hand pumped flash lights (keeps kids busy), hanging solar bulbs. I keep one of the bulbs hung in corner of living area...even has remote. Crisco candles since long burning but don't leave where pets or kids can knock them. So many options.

Water is very important to store.. not just for obvious reasons. It has a very high specific heat (it can absorb tons of heat before warming up). One way to stay cool is turn your AC on low (65-70F) at night after 10PM and keep running until noon, when peak load hours kick in and power outages can happen. The water will cool down and help keep the house cool (by absorbing heat) if the juice goes out thru the hot afternnoon.

Pre hurricane, we freeze 8 water gallons , 30 small waters, power off,fast! Move 6 gallons to frig. Top. Keeps 4-5 days in 100 hot weather. Ice chest small waters ,eggs, cheese,milks, snack foods. 3 ice chests 1. Snacks ,2 drinks , 3 foods to cook, oil. With gallon frozen. Leave at least 4-6 in freezer and don't open it!! Small frig freezer in kitchen eggs,cooked eggs, creme, cheese, etc

I install CO, CO2, and NO2 sensors as part of commercial building automation systems in large distribution centers across the country. CO2 is heavier than air, but will just give you a headache and make you groggy. CO is slightly lighter than air. I have seen some installed by others in the ceiling 35 feet above the floor as part of the fire alarm system for emergency notification. We install ours at the height recommended by Dwyer, the manufacturer, which is 5 feet off the floor, in what they consider the breathing zone. I do not recommend mounting CO sensors at floor level. Dwyer model GSTA of anyone wants to Google them to see for yourself. We've installed roughly 400 of them in the last 3 years. I'd go with what the device manufacturer recommends.

I built a bug out van with 1,200 watts of solar panels and 900 amp hours of lithium batteries. A 9,000 btu mini split ac/heat pump. 52 gallons of fresh water and a 7 stage reverse osmosis UV Filter for purified water. One large and one small instapot to conserve energy and water. I have an on board 12.2 gallon propane tank with a Propex HS2000 propane heater. I also have a portable 48 gallon propane tank mounted in a small covered trailer with another 42 gallon water tank plus a portable 14.5 gallon gas tank.

As I am listening to you, my lamp where I am sitting literally started flickering. I turned it off. I will be staying at home I believe, no matter what. It's safer here than anywhere else I could go. I wouldn't want to be in any chaos on the road. I've been without power for 6 months, long ago in Florida. Bathed in a kids swimming pool with water from a pump, hauled water inside for toilets. This was 40 years ago. We didn't have AC until I was 13...no TV until 10. I have a propane camping stove, a wood stove, and bbq grill. We will survive until Jesus calls us home. No fear, but prepared.

This is the perfect video!! I was trying to explain to someone the basics of what you should have for a power outage. We had a bunch of storms that blew through and part of my city lost power. Thanks for the tips! I too have lanterns/torches stationed around my house (especially one in the bathroom at arms reach from the bath!) But also…… I put a small fluorescent “dot” on these which makes them super-easy to find in the dark. I actually have these “dots” on things around my house (sharp corners, walls, etc). At night my house looks like a runway 🤣 Another great product is fluro shoelaces. You can lay a line around dangerous items, or tie around chair legs. I feel one should be focused on SAFETY when these off-grid situation arise. Keep “safe” everyone 🙏❤️

Good tips! We have led battery light strips under our top cabinets and bathrooms. They are on a magnet under the cabinets so you can always find them. Easy to grab one and go to another room. Found them on Amazon. Love them!!!!

Dollar Tree has some pretty good little LED lanterns and tap lights and magnetic lights. They take AA or AAA batteries but the batteries last pretty good, even with the Dollar Tree low drain batteries. Harbor Freight has some pretty good LED pocket flashlights. I can't afford any kind of generators being on a fixed income. I'd love some kind of generator but it just isn't going to happen. But I'll have light and I have a solar crank radio. That will have to be good enough.

during power outages here in NH mostly durning the winter for use so bringing in snow to melt for the toilet in warm weather we bring water up from the swamp and fill trash cans so we can flush the toilets and save the drinkable water for drinking. Put a trash can near the down spouts of to collect water from the roof when it rains

I ordered dog cooling mats to sleep on. Full bathtubs in a blackout will cause HIGH humidity in the house increasing discomfort. Use a water bob in the tub to hold water. Buy cooling neck ties and cooling towels if you have the means. Candles etc cause increased heat during summer heat.

I don't think it would if you were to cut a large trash can liner (no perfumed type) and taped it around the top of the tub till needed. It wouldn't evaporate that way and things wouldn't get it it either.

@@wheepingwillow24u17 that's the same concept as a water bob and a great suggestion. The goal is to stop the evaporation and reduce humidity. Dry heat is easier to withstand than humid heat. Also, you have to fight the mosquitos. They always find an open water source. Stay safe my friend, Stay Free!

Rather then unplugging your far better off turning off your individual breakers and the main .VIP when you bring them back up .Turn on circuits without inductive loads ( motors, compressors etc..) or electronics.these are the most susceptible to low voltage and spikes .Also turn on breakers slowly after bringing back up the main if you don’t under the right circumstances you could create minor problems up and to in certain extreme circumstances an explosion of the panel .

Not only kerosene / hurricane or Tilly lights / lamps (hurricane lights are best as they don't have a mantle to break thus rendering the lamp useless) but also candles. Matches and cig lighters. Matches can get wet thus rendered useless. Cig lighters will work if wet until they run out of gas. A pint tin of petrol or kerosene to wet the tip of a rag to start a log fire in wet conditions but use the dry heart of the log. Place the outer part of the log vertical near the fire so the warmth will dry out the timber. Just a few tips others may not be aware of.

We have a well also. I watch the weather forecast daily. If I think a storm is coming; I fill up all my pitchers, tea kettle, wash tub etc. i always keep empty bottles such as vinegar, pop bottles, Downy bottles filled in garage to flush toilets. Unplugging appliances when the lights go out is a great tip. My appliance repairman told me to do that when I switched to a computerized washing machine. I also keep my desktop PC connected to battery back-up in the case of a sudden outage. These days with parts and chip shortages it is better to be safe than sorry.

Have screen on your windows and all doors. When I was young we didn’t have AC in the home. We had fans but the moved hot air. We would sit on the front porch or under a shade tree until it cooled down in the evening.

You mentioned (as well as MANY other preppers) about being able to fill a sink and a tub if you essentially have forewarning. I’d like to add and this may sound petty but think how important it can be. If You’re going to try to use a sink and you had say 20 minutes to fill it, the last thing you want to do is a sink full of dishes! So my Suggestion, keep your sink clean or empty along with the tub just in case you need that space. PLUS think of the water you’d use in your preps to wash dishes that could’ve been done before a blackout

Water is SO necessary. I am always in need of it each day. I have been filling any container that becomes empty, with soapy water for cleaning, flushing the toilet, cleaning a cut, shaving, wiping the dog's paws on muddy days, cleaning produce, or taking a sponge bath, cooling off, etc. Some of the water is bottled, but I want some larger containers, and the pills to drop in, for drinking water. I saw the video for making a well pump, and that is fascinating. It stated that the commercially made newer pumps are available at a big box store, but I just happen to have an older one, which they say is better, as a focal point, in one` of my flowerbeds...That will be useful, if we cannot use a our well.

@@jeanmader2302 we are on tank (cistern) water and our outside tap is gravity fed. We are also on septic tank so can “flush” the toilet with a bucket of water. Although we have a huge generator, you don’t want to become reliant on that for sure!!!!!

For entertainment I'd recommend a portable CD player with headphones. Usually run on a couple of AA batteries and can get hours of playback. Also have a portable video game system that runs on AA batteries as well. Good to have alternatives that won't drain your USB charging reserves.

Whenever I have a power outage at my house, me and all my little brothers go downstairs. One time, when I was sleeping at night with the sermon on TV, the power went out. I used the flashlight on my phone so I could lead my little brothers downstairs. Daddy, who had a stroke 11 years ago, yelled, "HEY! WHEN?! WHEN?! WHEN?! WHERE IS IT?!" Mommy said, "Jimmy, it's a power outage." Back in 2012, all of Pennsylvania had a blackout. My brothers and I went downstairs. Daddy called the PECO Company. The lady's voice on the phone said something like not knowing the cause of the outage. When I went to school the next day, everyone was talking about the blackout.

If you have a basement that's finished and well insulated all you gotta run is a dehumidifier in the summer and it's very comfortable mine doesn't get over 72 and the humidity is perfect. My solar generator and backup power can run my whole basement during outages plenty of entertainment and cover from criminals plus I have security cameras outside watching the exterior from the safety of the basement.

This is my concern!!! Here, our climate laws are becoming ridiculous!!!!!!! We have a wood stove connected to our hotwater and at the start of winter we go totally off electric heating. We cut our power bill by half. Have plenty of wood (not that we use much), I can do washing, dishes, cleaning, and bathing ALL from our fireplace (and even cook and boil water too). God help us should we ever lose this system!!!!

I made a solar transmission cooler ac. Running right now but not because hot as much as humid today which triggers my MS. It can run off either USB with solar power bank or with electric. It's 10W. I also have small solar panel that can run the pond pump (2W). It cost about $60 to make including the power bank and solar panel. It can drop temp about 20°. Started buying Everything with USB so it works with power bank and portable. Soldering iron, fan and the pond pump all can be plugged up they USB. For blankets in door ways, use shower rod with long curtain works as well. I did to keep my fireplace heat in living room last winter. Cooking can be done over alcohol burner. 3 cans with alcohol in middle one and other 2 cans over the fire. Can at least boil water for cup noodles or rig it to hold small iron skillet to fry an egg. After going thru Noreasters in past, hurricanes and now in earthquake land having several options is best in all situations

I believe some people will need to get safety test plugs for there toilet and tub, some city water systems have pump stations or something similar and when the power goes out it can send the sewage backwards from your toilet and tub filling your bathroom with sewage water, I'm on a well so am not a hundred percent sure, but have seen videos of people discussing this. The plugs you can get at a hardware store.

Those large Brute garbage cans from Lowes…I bought one bc it’s a #4plastic! On the bottom it even has a glass and fork stamped on bottom. That means…You can store water in it! I put in my basement and filled with fresh water. I can run the water thru my Alexapro for extra security. I’m getting another one.

Your wrong about CO guys ! Most CO detectors are battery operated .Also remember fresh air readily dilutes CO .Most CO is caused by poor combustion and or venting.CO specific Gravity ( unlike CO2 is which is heavier than room air ) close to that of air it doesn’t sink it mixes readily with air .Again I am a HVAC refrigeration mechanic and have been for 30 years .combustion is part of my job .

I have purchased 6 solar spot light from Lowe’s. I have used them a couple different times at night. I place them on the corner of the living room and bedrooms. They give out plenty of light and just need to be charged by placing them outside in the morning. Keep up the good work.

If you have reason to believe you will be without water, for example: bad storm warning, a WATER BOB is a plastic vessel that fits in your bathtub. I keep mine under the sink in case of emergency.

I purchased a Jackery last year. Along with that I also purchased a large capacity 12 volt fridge/freezer ( a lot of van lifers and overlanders use them) . A Jackery can not run a standard home freezer for very long....but it can run a 12 volt fridge for hours upon hours. Sense I'm in an apartment and solo living , this setup is perfect for me sense a gas generator isn't an option for me. ( something to consider for apartment dwellers)

@@conniediaz6456 most definitely! I have the Jackery 1000 . But another slightly cheaper option is the Jackery 880 which can be purchased from Lowe’s website I’m sure it can run the fridge just as well just a slightly shorter timeframe with one charge. And I have a setpower Aj50 fridge/freezer which has a 53 quart capacity . There are some larger versions on the market but of course they’re probably gonna cost more. To make the most out of space I tend to take all my meats and things out of their original packaging and vacuum seal them but this also helps if I ever have to move items to that portable fridge. It can fit quite a lot if the food is packaged right and you take the crate out .

The best way to prepare for a real black out is practicing a simulated black out day. This simulation should be for at least 24 hours. This is a good way for you to practice using your preps as well. Just a heads up, carbon monoxide is actually slightly lighter than air so it will rise and not collect close to the floor initially. I work in the fire department and have had to deal with this.

We have a two burner propane camping stove that I have plenty of propane backup for. We have cooked bacon, beans, and hot dogs on the stove and it worked great! Especially for a household that has an electric oven…Grilled dogs by gas are a lot better than grilled in a pan!

If you can build a sturdy timber stand and put a quality black garbage can, or galvanized can on top in direct sun, it will heat up during the day. Install a solar shower outside and it will give you a hot shower each day. Galvanized can is best for decorative purposes, they can be sprayed on the outside in colors of choice to look like a mini water tower.
