I have come across "Sender unit". It is the unit which measures the fuel in the tank. It is more specifically called a Fuel Gauge Sender Unit. Fuel Leak / Sender failure might indicate that the fuel pressure does not come up and that there is either a leaking hose or the fuel level is not true and does not trigger Low Fuel Level Sender failure might indicate that the resistance of the sender is not plausible SC/OC.
@keyesrm
@keyesrm 6 ай бұрын
“Sender failure” possibly refers to sensors. I’ve heard engine oil pressure sensors referred to as oil pressure senders, I’m guessing it’s checking for resistance and/or voltage to be within a certain range to verify operation
@mgkleym
@mgkleym 6 ай бұрын
The fuel sender is the mechanical float that measures the tank level. So that light comes on if it detects a sudden drop in the fuel level meaning ether the tank is leaking or the fuel gauge has failed.

Why do you turn off 2 subpanels instead of the main breaker for these tests.
@nics-systems-electric
@nics-systems-electric 6 ай бұрын
There's multiple reasons. we don't want to shut down the entire building for no reason. You also don't want to be operating a large breaker under high load as it can fail. When you do a full building shut down you wouldn't be just opening the main breaker you would be turning off every smaller one first anyway.
@inothome

Do you ever alternately turn off one ATS at a time to verify that particular ATS can start the gen? I know in a true power outage it may not matter, but at least in the US when it comes to hospitals you have to verify each ATS can start the gen. Which used to be rotated each test and I have seen 15 or more ATSs in some hospitals. But that way, if that one circuit trips for whatever reason the ATS is confirmed it can start the gen. But not sure how strict regs are for schools there. It's a school, not a hospital.
@nics-systems-electric
@nics-systems-electric 6 ай бұрын
It's not something you have to do. the generator just has to be started monthly you can just hit the run button to satisfy that requirement. I think I have started it from the standby transfer switch before just by doing a test with load from the actual transfer switch not switching the breaker off. Definitely not a bad idea to test all transfer switches.

@@nics-systems-electric Makes sense here to not really worry about it. But when it comes to back up gens and hospitals it's a whole other layer of regulations they have to meet and validate regularly.

Do you guys put a CO detecter in the generator room, or is that not much of a concern with the exhaust system you have?
@nics-systems-electric
@nics-systems-electric 6 ай бұрын
There is not a CO detector. diesels produce much less carbon monoxide than gas engines so I guess it's not as much of a concern especially since it's exhausted outside and there is constant air movement in the room when it's running

We have an old Kohlar 39Kw LPG generator in our radio comms towers equipment shelter which we acquired from AT&T some years back, It's automatic transfer and powers the entire comms site plus it has a solar maintained battery bank and UPS that keeps the site equipment online including the tower lights during the time between power loss and generator transfer. She may be old but she has never failed us.

why not use solar panels and battery arrays instead of fossil fuels.. excess power can be used instead of grid power, saving $$$ over the long run
@nics-systems-electric
@nics-systems-electric 6 ай бұрын
Solar has its place but emergency power is not it. Not only the batteries that would be required would be extremely large and expensive that whole system would need to be CSA/ULC listed for life safety emergency use. we have schools with solar but not with batteries that would be just too big for a school. The solar system shuts down during a power outage and only the generator produces power at those schools anyways.
@SirFrag32
@SirFrag32 6 ай бұрын
The amount of batteries needed to run for the required duration would be massive. Plus with diesel, assuming roads are clear, you can get fuel deliveries at regular intervals.

0:07 “60 kay double you” why don’t you refer to it as it’s real name? Respect derived SI units. I don’t even think it’s going to be kW. It would be KvA?
@nics-systems-electric
@nics-systems-electric 6 ай бұрын
It's not "Kay double you" It's actually 60kw which is a measurement of power. kW is a common abbreviation for thousand watt. and is not the same as kVA. Generators are usually rated in kW however often both are specified on the nameplate as with this one. 60 kW or 75 kVA. Hope that helps.
@inothome
@inothome 6 ай бұрын
kVA vs kW... VA is Volts times Amps and with DC gives you the Wattage, k for kilo, M for mega etc.... When it comes to AC since the current and voltage will not be in phase (except a purely resitive load) a simple VA calculation will not give you your actual power output. You have to account for the power factor, which is the ratio of VA vs real power expressed as power factor. As a general rule of thumb they use a 0.8 power factor to derive the kW rating from the kVA rating. But in real world conditions the power factor will change based on the types of loads. Purely resistive loads are a PF of 1, a crappy motor may be as low as 0.5 unloaded. So transformers and generators are based off the VA they can produce not the actual Wattage, since the power factor is unknown. And yes, your toy 5,000W gen at home is rated by Watts for simplicity, but real generators are rated in kVA or MVA. As far as nitpicking kW vs kilo-Watt.... that's just being a pain in the ass for no reason. Anyone in the industry calls it kW, MW etc.... By the way, Watt is the SI unit for power. So kW is correct in SI nomenclature too. And for someone telling someone to respect SI units, kvA is wrong. kVA is correct. V and A are capitalized as they are respective SI units. The k is just the sign for thousand and is lower case.
@nics-systems-electric
@nics-systems-electric 6 ай бұрын
@@inothome I appreciate the explanation and detail. I'm not sure what makes my generator a toy as it does the same function as larger set ups during a power outage. Either way thanks for the comment.
@inothome
@inothome 6 ай бұрын
@@nics-systems-electric You misunderstood, that wasn't directed at this generator. I was referring to little portable gens that are rated in Watts, not kVA like this gen is. Like a Honda 5kW gen, they normally don't advertise them in VA since most people buying them wouldn't understand. I was more talking to the original snarky comment about "respecting derived SI units".
