I remember a power outage happening at our GE store. What happened was our store is on the same substation that is notoriously known to have serious problems and needs to be rebuilt. At least once or twice a year, it power surges. This one night I was working and it had surged. We didn't know the substation surged because for a while we had power. Then all of a sudden, one by one all of the cash registers were shutting off within 5 minutes of one going off. Because of the surge and the way our backup generator was set up, it was frying the registers one by one. Pretty soon, by 9pm two hours before we were set to close none of the registers but the self checkouts were working and we also were having a huge rush of customers. Luckily everyone was checked out in time before the self scans went down. I was lucky enough to call maintenance and the IT people to report what was happening in the store. They had to come in and bring all new registers in the middle of the night to fix the fried registers so we could open up the following day-we did eventually open, but two hours late. They had to shut off the freezers and prevent customers from buying any cold foods because not only did the registers get fried from the power surge, but so did a lot of the motors inside of the refrigerators and freezers from the power surge. It was a nightmare.

We has similar issues to that at my store, power surge fried a few of the components in the wall coolers and one storage freezer, we had some electrical issues with one the registers but not the register it self, the electrical was fried. There were a few total blackouts which lasted for about 5-10 seconds before generator lights kicked in, and one time it broke then entire PA system and music.

I work at Giant Eagle in Butler, I am still waiting for the day the power goes out as it donesnt happen very often, but I have been told it does happen once in a while. I once was in another Giant Eagle in Butler where the power was already out when I got there and they had no emergency lights, so the only light was from the windows. registers were open but for cash only, and freezer isle was blocked off.

Don't get why these stores can't invest in a generator large enough to keep the store operating during a power outage. Don't need 100% power, just enough to keep the light and registers going.

The music stays on even during a power outage because it has backup power, thats incase we need to make an important page to either customers to alert them of something or to page another employee o manager in case of emergency,

I started using the store walkie talkie it easier for me because not always someone at the front of the store and this way go to get carts or help out a customer so where I am at the only downside of the headset that it hurts my ear it came handy on 4-10 the I had to work someone broke somthing to clean it up and not a broom with me so get in the walkie-talkie and a another employee bring me a broom

In my store, we don’t use walkie talkie at all If we need someone we have to page them over the speaker.

strange how it doesn't work that way at the Giant eagle I work out when we lost power, we still had most of the lights, however the music was off and so were the registers so the store had to be closed.

patricknedz the backup could of failed it been know to happen

@@patricknedz They could have spent a few thousand more to have the registers on generator and they wouldn't have to close and lose money. Poor planning.

@@billybassman21 the store I’m at has battery backup on the registers so they can still be operational. They last for a while too
