Power Plant Basics: Hydrogen Seal oil

Hydrogen is used to cool the rotor of the generator due to it's impressive heat-transfer qualities, despite how flammable/explosive it is in air. To keep the H2 gas contained in the generator without coming out around the rotating shaft and crating a dangerous atmosphere we pump oil around the shaft at a higher pressure than the gas.
