I feel like everyone is misunderstanding this video. This is not about who is the "best" team, it's about how impressive the path they got there was. For example, us NJ Devils fans would consider strength of rosters of teams to be 1. 2000, 2. 2003, 3. 1995 (with 2001 as everyone's favorite if they had won!). But the 2003 team finished #2 in the East, played one true top team (#1 Ottawa), one Cinderella story (Anaheim) and two teams 15 to 21 points bellow them in the standings. On the other hand 2000 played the defending Cup champions Stars, came back down 3-1 against the Flyers (#1 team in the East), took down a 100 point Toronto team and swept a strong 98 point Panthers team. Even more impressive, the 1995 Devils were #5 in the East, while defeating #4 Boston & #3 Pittsburgh in 5 games a piece, outmatched the Legion of Doom #2 Flyers then swept the Presidents Trophy winning Detroit Red Wings.

From a Leaf's fan, I have no clue how you have those Detroit teams that low, even with your explanation. They faced some tough teams (Colorado, Pens, Vancouver), and steam rolled through the playoffs. Lost 6/22 games in 2008 and 7/23 games in 2002. One of the great things about the 2015 Blackhawks was that they played 2 and a half rounds of hockey with basically 4 defensemen. Rozsival broke his leg against the Wild and Timonen barely played 10 minutes most nights. We split time mostly between Seabrook, Keith, Hjalmarsson, and Oduya. As a Pens fan, it’s insane to put the 17 team ahead of the 16 team. The 16 team got hot late in January and never cooled off. On most nights they dominated the other team on the stat sheet and the scoreboard. Going into the playoffs, their advanced stats were insane for a team that started so poorly that year. Then even come playoff time they outplayed the Rangers badly, outplayed Washington, got tested by Tampa but prevailed, and decimated San Jose. If you look at some of those victories statistically, it’s insane how badly they outplayed elite teams, with that cup final against San Jose being the best example. The 17 team on the other hand had no Letang and played a much more collapse defensively and score on the rush style of hockey. They blocked shots, Fleury and Murray bailed them out big time against Washington and Nashville respectively, and they barely survived a conference final against a very mediocre Ottawa team. Heck, even though the Columbus series ended 4-1 PIT, Columbus had the better of the play in most games. Bobrovsky just cratered while Fleury stole the show. The 17 team should have been in the top 5 or 10 weakest cup champs, not the top 10 best. The 16 team at 9 would seem relatively accurate to me.
@jackmclaughlin6054 жыл бұрын
"Mediocore team" we had the best player on the planet at the time in erik karlsson, Solid Wingers(stone hoffman ryan brassard etc) and good all round depth. Plus one of the goals in game 7 happened on a powerplay that shouldnt have been called cause phil took a dive that the ref someone thought was a penalty
@SMP19934 жыл бұрын
Jack McLaughlin Going into 2016-2017, the preseason oddsmakers had Ottawa’s point total at o/u 83.5. Your roster was deep, but compared to the rest of the East, it wasn’t that talented. You guys played a 1-3-1 that was annoying for teams to play against and Erik Karlsson had one of the best playoff runs in history. The Pens-Sens series could have gone either way, but that doesn’t change the fact that both the Senators and the Pens without Letang were mediocre teams who rode 1 hot player to the conference finals (Fleury in our case, Karlsson in yours).

@BloggerMusicMan4 жыл бұрын
I MASSIVELY disagree about the 2002 Red Wings. All of their Western Conference opponents were very formidable. Vancouver with the West Coast Express line as an OPENING round team? That was a very good eighth seed, and after an admittedly slow start, the Red Wings went right through them in six. They also only took five games to go through St. Louis with Chris Pronger, who was only two years off a Hart Trophy. They also took out a defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado in a tough series, but a 7-0 win in Game 7. Carolina was a fairly weak Stanley Cup Final opponent. Probably the stronger team from the East that year would have been Boston or Toronto. But they still went through them in five. It was never really in doubt. This, on top of the fact that the team has 10 Hall of Famers or future Hall of Famers and also ran through the regular season as a one seed, with 15 more points than the next highest team in the entire league. That's unique even by the standards of Cup champions.

I actually STATED in this very video I didn't care how many hall of fame talents were on a roster because that weighs against recent champs and then you have to factor in whether those HOF players were all primary reasons for the win.

@@TheHockeyGuy Fair enough. I think the criteria of how much elite talent is on the roster is actually extremely relevant though. Even if you don't factor in Hall of Fame per se, you can still compare Pietrangelo and Tarasenko and compare them to Messier and Coffey, even if those two St. Louis Blues aren't yet in the Hall of Fame. The Pens did go on a run in 92, but the winning streak you mention might be the 93 pens - 17 game win streak. Also if David Volek doesn’t score, and the Pens win in 93 they’re the best team of all time. At least on that board. People want to say ‘11 Canucks are the best team to not win a cup, ‘93 Pens say “hold my beer”

The 14' Kings weren't dominant but put 4 absolutely tremendous playoff series together, the reverse sweep against the Sharks, first ever playoff meeting between the Kings and Ducks, the Kings-Hawk's classic and quite possibly the best most competitive 5 game series ever in the finals, great hockey all around but definitely not dominating
@FrostyNipz4 жыл бұрын
Completely disagree about the 2014 Kings.. came back from 3-0, beat a very good Ducks & Blackhawks team.. with a tough finals against a very deep Rangers team, that was pretty close despite being a 5 game series. Very impressive run imo.

Couldn’t agree more and i disliked those ’14 Kings strongly But i would rather face the ’12 Kings any day of the week

I'm obviously biased, but with Detroit in 2002, they went 0-for-April and lost games 1 and 2 to Vancouver before flipping the switch and playing to their potential of Hall of Fame hockey. And in 2008 when Chris Osgood takes over for Hasek and wins his second Cup ten years after his first. (has anyone else ever had multiple Cups over 10 years beside Roy?) Those are great stories, but I agree the teams were so good that in hindsight, winning the Cup wasn't a shock. But 1998! C'mon! They lose Konstantinov and Vernon, and still repeat?!
@davidwilliams94892 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely correct about The 2012 kings, they could beat anyone on that board in a seven game series. That would be a very interesting topic for you to do..

If you're taking suggestions for video ideas, I think it would be interesting to examine something like "most dramatic drop offs of production/hit by the aging curve" video. I know you did a "flash in the pan" one before, and I think looking at people like say Rod Brind'Amour who seemed to defy age and then just hit a wall would be cool.

Idea for a fun video: "Player's who hasn't won a Stanley cup, (not just current players but historically) and who would "deserve" it the most. Thinking like a top 15 or something. Counting games played, captaincy, team loyalty and so on. Love the content. Greetings from Sweden.

As a Hawks fan I think the series vs Anaheim in 2015 was the best series I've ever watched and the finals were the best I've ever seen as well (slight bias). It was slightly painful to see your #1 pick

Great video, Shannon. But I would put up higher 2014 LA and 2018 Washington.

2012 LA Kings number 1 for best team to win. 2014 LA Kings number 1 for most incredible run. Won three game 7s on the road and a short but intense final. Dallas Stars way too low. Back to back presidents trophy winners, best defense in the league by far, had to beat Salo, Fuhr, Roy and Hasek to lift cup, best goalies of that era. I’d put them somewhere between 10-20. I think this is a case of Shannon trying too hard to not be homer 😄

I 100% agree with us at 15. We were no doubt a great roster top to bottom but definitely had those scares against Columbus and Tampa Bay. No doubt though we are a top 15.

Would love to see that video of best ever finals video..so hard to do since always seems like one average team gets hot thru 3 rds then fades out badly in finals..but i have all finals games play by play in beta and VHS and dvd from 1973 to present and my fav to watch by far is 1984 oilers vs islanders..old going out and new coming in so to apeak! And my fav games of all them is... 3. Gm1 of 2006 finals 2. Gm4 of 1992 finals 1. Gm4 of 1978 finals Just fyi lol.

Id take the 2010 and 13 Hawks over a lot of the teams you had higher than them. 2008 Detroit is also the best cap era team ever and should be higher.

you said you wouldn't hold the strike shortened season against the '13 hawks, but you only ranked them 17th? that was the best team ive ever seen. they only lost 7 games! and none of their playoff series went to game 7. two words: 17 seconds

I listened to your reasoning on the 2002 Red Wings and I still don't get it. What was the reasoning behind this list if not just how good the teams were? Is that not what Power Rankings are?
@commandershepard18384 жыл бұрын
If datsyuk didn’t miss the first 5 games of the 09 final, I think the series would have already been over. They were up 3-2 when he came back but he was probably at 40%. If he doesn’t get hurt against Chicago, he’s a totally different player and probably what they needed to finish the series in 4 or 5. Then fleury stood on his head and single handedly won the series. Both years the wings outplayed the pens. Unfortunately they had babcock as their coach lol. The 08 and 09 teams were loaded and dragged down by babcock.

Man I wish the Hawks won that 2014 WCF. Imagine cups in ‘10, ‘13, ‘14, and ‘15. Would have been an unheard of stretch of hockey this day in age. That was arguably their second best team also, but they just could not get the puck behind Jonathan Quick.
