Just finishing up a couple rocker patches and a cab corner on my 03’ Silverado 2500. Wanted to thank you for helping guide me through the steps to make that happen. I’ve never done any bodywork so I used your excellent tutorials as a guide. Not gonna say it came out perfect but it’s way better than rust and it will last a long time! Thank you Jerry!

That bondo hog sure saves a lot of work. Do you only use it for the 80 grit?👍
@jamescon552 жыл бұрын
You can use 36/40 grit to remove old paint/primer and or filler, depending the app. Just be careful when cuttin mud with the heavy grit as it can cut more than ya want IF not careful.
@Mikefngarage2 жыл бұрын
Really important DONT PUSH ON THE SANDER!!!! run the sander the directions of the panel and let it cut. When using a Da or 8 inch da pushing on the sander will make the panel wavy.

Hutchins orbital air file with 120 then step down to 220 is what I use on large area's like that on 1'st blocking. We use to call those long sanding blocks Idiot sticks back in the day , lol.
@jamescon552 жыл бұрын
Yep, Hutchins air files are my personal go to's for most mud work or primer leveling whether orbital or even regular air file to just start knockin it down. Just a preference. Some guys use mud hogs, some use air files.
@keithclark4862 жыл бұрын
@@jamescon55 On large area's a mud hog will wobble and if you get to close to high contours it will dig in So I use a air file to cover large area's for a flatter finish. I've never seen anyone use 80 grit to sand primer or use it as a body filler It's best to keep the mill build at a minimum.

👍🏻 Awesome job!!! I got a respirator with the pink filters like yours, was shocked how dirty the filters where when cut in two. Can you recommend what filter to use when painting? I know the charcoal filters only last a few hours, not handy for the DIY guys.
@LakesideAutobody2 жыл бұрын
3M 07193 Dual Cartridge Respirator Assembly Organic Vapor - I get a new mask about 2 times a year. I guess you could say there's more than a few hours on the mask but I only use for paint - I really don't spend that much time putting on a coat though and I leave the garage quickly after. A fan expels the fumes by the time I get back for the next coat. I also read in the instructions on a different brand that if you "smell" anything paint when it's sealed to your face - that means the charcoal filters are done. Not sure if that's true but it does sound logical to me. I did a review on that mask btw - kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZm7mKmJgbB9g7s Have a good weekend - it's good to stay safe and protect you lungs so do some homework on that - let me know if you find anything real good on the topic too - like when exactly to change them out - right now I'm going by time and smell but that's probably not perfect - Jerry

Dang thats aggressive hitting high build with 80 grit on a mud hog. I would use 80 on a long long board to cut the highs down then do another coat of high build slightly reduced and go 180 220 and then 400. Looks good
@LakesideAutobody Жыл бұрын

Why not use a inline sander? Then a quick hand block and done.
@LakesideAutobody2 жыл бұрын
You could do that too. For big square areas I like the ND900 'cause it blocks in all directions. For long rectangle areas I like the long board better. Just a preference though - it can be done both ways - have a good weekend Doc :)

If one don't have a bondo hog, could a DA or Air file work? Thx for the awesome vids and tips
@LakesideAutobody2 жыл бұрын
Yes - you could use that - the air file would get it straighter than the DA though. DA's a little small for blocking large areas.
@christianmeyer67312 жыл бұрын
Where you added the putty to fill the low spot, will you block it again before priming? Or prime and then sand it with the finish sand? In the same step on my project. Thanks!

I've done it both ways but I tend to block it first, then prime for finish sanding. Good question btw. Have a good weekend Christian :)

How deep of the scratches that primer can fill after finished the bondo work .
@LakesideAutobody2 жыл бұрын
Feather fill can fill 36 grit scratches but it's always good to get your filler down to 80, your feathering down to 120, etc. Remember, feather fill is basically body filler that you can spray on so the rules are similar to bondo.
@zhengatozzy99042 жыл бұрын
@@LakesideAutobody I always start with 80 and end up with 320 on bondo. I think the grits above 120 is for shaping and feathering and anything under 120 is for sanding , maybe I am wrong 😀 And thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge.
