Replacement of the power sliding door cable on a 2011 to 2017 Honda Odyssey. As you can tell though out the video I really have no idea what I'm doing. Enjoy!

Thanks for the video. Couldn't have fixed without it. I just got finished and here are a few tips: 1. You're probably thinking about buying that crimping tool from amazon. Don't. It's worthless. Just use some strong vice grips. 2. Careful how much you jack up the door. Also, don't touch the jack after the pin is out. It's a real pain to get the pin back in if the jack changed its height. 3. A T-40 screwdriver would have been great. All I had was a T-30, but it still worked. 4. That little C-clip that holds the pin in is a pain. Get a pick. 5. Pay close attention to the part about wrapping the cable. Back cable goes in back of spool. Front cable goes in front of spool. 6. When first wrapping the spool, the cable should seat down in the grooves flush with the spool. You may need a flat head screwdriver to seat the cables when first starting to wrap the spool. 7. Once the spool is wrapped, there should be no slack in cable. 8. Just as in the video, throw in a few screws to hold the assembly together when testing it. I put in all screws and bolts and ended up taking them all out again. 9. Block off the whole afternoon. Took me 6 hours (But I struggled with a few parts).

So the crimps did not need to be perfectly square and you used a normal vise grips? Thanks for your additional suggestions!

***READ COMMENTS BEFORE ATTEMPTING!*** Awesome video, thanks for the work. If you're trying this yourself, please note that the video shows incorrect routing for the cables. Some good comments below. Cable coming from the back attaches at the back of the spool and the cable coming from the front attaches at the front of the spool. The cables do not cross over each other. They should route straight up from the guides onto the spool. This job would have taken me 2 hours rather than 5 if I had read the comments first.

Thank you. I just fixed my sliding door while watching your video step-by-step. Worked perfectly. The only change was I connected the rear cable to the rear of the spool and the cable that goes towards the front to the front of the spool. I also did not place the door in the center. I had the door open all the way this way I had to wind up the rear cable a lot and the front cable only a little. It made it a little easier to keep the cables under control while trying to get the spool back in the motor. Thanks again for an excellent video.

Thanks a ton for posting this. I just did my 2016 tonight and the door is now working. Without this video I probably would not have attempted it myself. It took me and my bro about 2 hours or so to get it done. Saved at least $1000 bucks! And for anyone looking to do this, it's not too bad, just be patient and follow this video, all the steps are there. Note (as many others have) that what he says about winding the cable is wrong, for the driver side door fix the cable on the left (opener) goes on the back of the spool, and the right (closing) cable goes on the front. The cables should NOT cross after coming through the white tensioners, they stay on the same side. I think its also mentioning that the cheap cable Honda uses is pathetic, and shame on them for putting their customers through this, my van is 3 1/2 years old and it snapped! Should be covered under warranty, i guess its too easy to collect the $1000 bucks for when people bring their vehicles in for repair. Big thanks to people like "BackYard Tech" who post videos to help us out and save some money. Good luck to all who attempt!!

Thanks for the great video! I ordered the kit on Friday, Saturday I took the panels off. The cable came in today, Monday. It took about 2 hours total. I wound the wires the way they appeared to be, but when I tested them they were backwards, so I rewound them. It looks wrong but the cables go up on the same side as the direction of the cable. ( The front cable goes up on the left side of the wheel, and the rear cable goes up the right side of the wheel.) Once I flipped them it wouldn't close all the way, so I reset the motor, by pulling the fuse then holding the close button on the dash. But, it still didn't want to close correctly, I opened the cover again, took the wheel out, made sure the wires were in the correct locations, then put it back together and it worked perfectly! Thanks again!

Thank you so much. Without your video I couldn't have dreamt about replacing my broken cable. Mine was on the other side and a there was a fan exhaust in the way. I also couldn't get the roller the same way you did, had to remove the bolts. I used masking tape to mark the spot and didn't have any issue putting it back. The ferrule crimper tool that I bought was garbage, I had to use pliers to tighten these ferrules enough. Otherwise I followed all your instructions and it took me about 6 hours to get my door fixed. Thank you again so much!

Well, you certainly helped me fix my door. I wouldn't have tried this without your video as a guide. The parts I bought also provided videos (by email, not posted). There was an important contradiction between the two videos. At 31:00 you incorrectly state what cables goes on each side of the pulley. Although you are working the drivers side door, you gave instructions for the passenger side door. If one follows your instructions for the drivers side door, the cable will cross and the open/close functions will switch and produce erroneous data for the position sensors. You must have figured this out because at 34:10 it is very clear that the cables do not cross and you corrected this error in your installation. Also, I found it easier to hand wind the cable with the door nearly fully open. That way I only had to keep one cable tight on the pulley and not two. Otherwise, I had no issues. You did a great job of pointing out where the troubles are. I think I saved over $1500. Thanks.

Thanks BackYard Tech for the video! - I just wanted to make a note for anyone completing this repair on the passenger's side of the van. On the passenger's side this video shows the correct spooling of the cables. Do not reverse them as recommended for the driver's side. I did that and had to redo it. The cables should not cross each other but go from the plastic pulley directly up into the spool with the rear cable on the front of the spool and the front cable on the rear of the spool. - Two other quick notes. You can't access the rear cable guide to pull it out and make installation easier because the A/C unit is in the way. Don't worry, it's pretty easy to fish the bare end of the cable through, push and twist and it'll find it's way all the way to the motor. Also, the right (rear) 10mm bolt that holds the motor cover on is hard to access because of the A/C unit as well but a long or at least standard 10mm open ended wrench will get it off/on 1/4 turn at a time. - I will say that after you do this once you could probably knock it out in an hour if you had to do it again. Like any repair, once you've done it the second time is much easier! Happy motoring.

Great video. Perfect amount of detail to let me do it myself. Canada be quotes 1300+tax. Cable kit from Amazon was 40, and crimper was 25. Same as other commenters, rear cable goes in back of spool, opposite of video. The crimper I bought wasn't strong enough to crimp the ferrule that came with my kit. I wound the cable around the spool with the door fully open, it made it easy only having to keep 1 sides cable tight against the spool. Setting home position of the door was also easy following a comment. Connect battery with door closed, and then hold closed for 25 seconds. Thanks Backyard, saved me some serious coin.

@@camilomuzard3498no worries. Good luck. My first repair I used a larger ferrule overtop of the not-quite-fully-crimped ferrule thinking the larger diiameter would allow the crimper to tighten everything enough. Just did my passenger side, many thanks!!! Winding the spool is definitely a 2 person job. I had to replace the cables on the passenger side of our 2014 Touring...The rear cable sheath is bolted to the body behind the rear A/C system. After trying unsuccessfully to thread the new cable through from the outside (without removing the sheath), I took a long section of the broken cable and cut the end at an angle (using bolt cutters)...this allowed me to feed it through from the outside pretty easily (the angled end got around the pulley without catching on the internal ribbing). I then put the end of the new cable against the end of the old cable and used a long piece of packing tape to wrap around them, joining them together. Gently pulling the old cable through while my wife pushed the new cable from the outside allowed us to feed the new cable through the sheath without removing the A/C system to unbolt the sheath.

One note, on my application, the front cable starts on the outboard side of the drive pulley and the rear cable starts on the inboard side of the drive pulley. It would definitely not work the other way.

I found that after spooling the cables it was easier to put the pulley back on with the nut and then work the tensioners (white things) back in. It took less than five mins to install the cables back into the motor. Side note on the driver side the front cable goes on the front of the pulley and on the Passenger side the back cable goes on the front of the pulley. Also the cable lenghts are super important. I had to cut about 2 inches off the new rear cables to have correct tension.

The only thing I did different was when it came time to install the cable tensioners I cut a piece of rubber tubing to fit onto shaft to hold it in the compressed state. I wound the cable on the drum and after tensioners were installed I took needle nose pliers and took out the tubing to get the cable tensioned. I hope this makes sense. That way you don’t have to try to compress those springs with greasy fingers.

Nonetheless, great video!

Remember kids: the motors are are a mirror image so whether the front cable attaches to the front of the cable reel or the backside depends on which side of the car you're working on. The bigger shiny surface with the y shape is the front of the reel. And on the driver side the front cable attaches to the front side of the real and on the passenger side the front cable attaches to the backside of the reel. So many people make the ignorant comment their way is the correct way not understanding that is different depending on which door you are repairing. I did the passenger door and I had it slid all the way back so when I wound the cable I started at the front and wound back.... It sounds like it might be difficult to get the shorter cable on the backside of the reel but it wasn't. I got it on the first try couldn't believe it.. the little white guides have springs use them when winding the last bit to hold tension

This fix was accurate for a 2015 Honda Odyssey. Did it a week ago and results are good thus far. WARNING: The video creator states the wires connect Back Wire to Front of Wheel; Front Wire to Back of Wheel. This is INCORRECT. Back wire goes to the back of the motor wheel, and the front wire goes to the front of the motor wheel. ADVICE: I found keeping the door CLOSED while trying to wind the wires around the wheel was much easier than the halfway technique. You will first wind most of the wheel with front wire, and only a rotation and a half on the back wire. Got it in one try this way. Otherwise, great video!

IMPORTANT READ THIS!! I did this but the crimp on the inside spool broke so i had to do it over. It was a LOT of time wasted 😢 although, i may not have crimped it with the right tool. So, Just a precautionary tail, make sure to crimp it really well with the right tool. Great video by the way thank you! 😊

I bought the $11.39 kit off ebay that had two wires that were the same length. I couldn't find any info on how long to cut the cables. I another set of cables from ebay for $33 that had the cables precut. The front cable was 74 5/8 in and the back cable was 63 5/8 in. Hope this helps.

So you’re only partially wrong about which cable goes where on the spool. I first did the passenger side door which has the front cable winding up starting on the back of the spool. The drivers side door has the back cable winding up starting on the back side of the spool. So theyre swapped depending on which door your working on. I just finished both doors. Thanks again for the video!

For future reference. When you finish winding the one side of the spool. Tape it down before working on the other side and then remove tape when you put it back in.

Very good video. Good job! I'm not sure if I need cables tho since mine are not broken. I have a weird situation where sometimes both side seem like its jammed. It will make a growling sound then it pops open. 1 side of the rollers seem like it has play but the other seems good. Im going to try and change both rollers and re-home the doors. Hopefully that works.

Just starting your video. I was quoted 1200$ parts n labor to fix this issue on my 2005 Oddy. My local OEM shop is a bunch of thieves I caught marking up parts double cost on me though, YMMV. I'm obviously wayyy out of warranties so I go to a 3rd party guy now and use OEM parts when recommended by him. Still, "magically" [rubbing my chin] my services for repair have gone down 15-25%. Imagine that...

What is the part called that's referred to as "guides" at 28:00? They are white pulleys that have springs attached and the cables get threaded through them right before the cables wrap around the spool. One of mine is broken and I'm not confident that I can glue it back together.

Backyard..........this was a loooonnnnngggg video!!! But well worth the watch. My wife's van has both sides broke. This should be a recall item. You took the time and showed step by step. All the other videos assume you know how to do specific things, like pulling the panel. I'm not nearly as afraid of doing this as I was. I will probably watch this a few more times to make sure I've got it nearly memorized. Only thing............could have posted the part numbers ;) Thanks for a great video! Would the steps be the same for the other side? Same parts?

The replacement cables are the same right and left. I bought the replacement cables from e-bay, and don't even know if there is a part #. I would like to point out a error I made in the video that other tubers caught. When routing the cable on the spool, I said which cable goes from and back/front of the spool incorrectly. Don't think I can edit a published video.

@@crownedroyal2003 I got my driver's side done. Passenger side........well for whatever reason the cables were tight and hard to get back in, when I did, it broke a couple of plastic pieces on the motor housing!!! So, I'm just going to leave it manual. Thanks for the video! I saw your footnote about the winding of the cable.

I feel like I had slack in the cables and did the front to the front (visible) and back to the back (hidden) side of the pulley. I tested it manually and it worked but then when we tried with the motor it had too much slack and sliced off some the of the pulley ribs as it ate up the new cable. Do you wind the cables the same direction (cw or ccw?) and should there be little to no slack? Hopefully I can get another attempt and my pully isn't FUBAR'd....

I have been trying to thread the cable like you did at 20:51 with no success for like 3 hours, how frustrating. How do you remove the pin from the roller so easily at 22:47? Doesn’t it have a fastener securing it on the opposite end?

Hi Thanks for great video. I have a question. Does the cable come with the exactly right size? Do I need to cut it for 2015 odyssey? when I put the cable into the ferrules, can I fold the end of cable a bit so that it can have tight grip. I don't know whether the size of cable is ok to allow me to do so. how to make the vehicle learn the position of door at the end? you mentioned dash open button , what's that button? thanks
